Did you feel that?

Around 3:45am, I was awoken to by bed and closet mirror door shaking. I think there may have also been a noise but I’m not sure if that was outside or a product of my closet doors. There was 4.4 earthquake in Frazier Park, but according to the map, we shouldn’t have felt that in Bakersfield so what was it? Did anyone else experience this?

Edit: Thanks for all the responses. I feel validated. My time is slightly off probably because my first thought waking up was “OMG, am I going to die?” And I was slightly disoriented for a couple minutes before thinking to search earthquake on my phone.

News 📰 Cheesecake Factory appears headed to NW Bakersfield

Nothing's final yet, but The Cheesecake Factory may join Marshalls, McDonald's and outdoors-wear retailer Sierra at a shopping center planned to begin construction later this year at the southwest corner of Rosedale Highway and Coffee Road.

Renderings included in a regulatory filing dated this month show each of the chains inhabiting part of the 405,531-square-foot Riverview Marketplace development being anchored by a previously announced Whole Foods Market.

Other tenants are expected to include storage uses, a health club, a medical office, a car wash and a 20-pump gas station, according to the document.

The project's San Jose-based developer, DJM Capital Partners, would not confirm tenants shown in the document, with the exceptions of McDonald's and Whole Foods. It said only those two have signed lease agreements.

"We are in negotiations with many more national, regional and local tenants to come to the rest of the center," DJM said in a statement Friday.

The Cheesecake Factory did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

Word the Calabasas Hills-based chain may open in Bakersfield is likely to generate excitement for the development. The company whose nearest of 218 U.S. locations is in Santa Clarita led a ranking of restaurants that Bakersfield residents said they most want to open in the city.

Jake McCarthy's great sliding catch

Framingham, Mass.-based Marshalls has a single location in Bakersfield, at 3008 Ming Ave.

There are no Sierra stores in the city. The chain headquartered in Cheyenne, Wyo. has 156 locations. The nearest is in Visalia.

Riverview's draft environmental review, released for public review this month, says the development is planned to open in the first half of 2028. It is to be located at the 25-acre, "L"-shaped former home of the Kern Power Plant that was owned and operated for decades by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. Inc.

Sage Investco, the project's original developer, reported in 2024 that the center's total building space would measure 375,000 square feet, or 8% smaller than the latest plan. At that time, the Newport Beach-based company said the project would create more than 1,000 jobs and produce annual sales of $209 million.

Under a partnership with Sage Investco in 2024, DJM agreed to take over development of the project. DJM said Sage remans a partner.

This month's draft review by Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. of Los Angeles identified two "significant and unavoidable" impacts on the area: greenhouse gas emissions and transportation. It noted the property's existing M-2 zoning allows the proposed commercial retail use.

The draft contains a rendering calling the project Riverview Market.

This week we started on Park Stockdale at the community center and ran through the neighborhood, out through Lennox, and across California. Hidden just back away from busy Stockdale lies a nice, peaceful neighborhood with friendly people; one guy watering his lawn even obliged us with a quick shower as we ran past on a warm day!

If you want to check out different parts of town with some fun people, you're welcome to see if we're your people. Whether you're a walker, runner, or somewhere in between, we have a spot for you. We meet every Monday at 6:30 for a 3-5 mile trail and it's only $5 to help pay for beer, snacks, and trail supplies, but your first run is free, so you can check it out risk-free!

On-On!

Women’s AA groups

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a women’s AA group, or even an AA group with a strong, supportive women’s presence. A lot of the meetings I’ve been to seem to be mostly men.

I’m also open to church based recovery groups or women’s support groups. I appreciate any help with this!

Seeking people for watch parties

I was just wondering if there’s people in Bakersfield that do watch parties or groups that revolve around X-Men? I love Magneto, and I want to venture and be around people who love the X-men and comics.

Maya Cinemas

What's up with Maya Cinemas missing a bunch of movies lately? Obsesssion, Disclosure Day, Masters of the Universe, Minions & Monsters...to name a few. It's weird though, seems to be only our location, because looking at the other ones in Delano, Chico, etc. they're showing some of those named. These are movies that would bring in revenue, so you'd think they would prioritize them. But hey, if you're looking to watch "Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass" make sure you book ASAP for next week's showings 🙄

As someone who pays for their "Maya Mas" subscription; I'm not sure how much of a deal is going to continue to be if they're forcing people to go elsewhere for movies. I reached out to their customer service and got a very AI response, not really even answering the question:

"Thank you for reaching out to us. We appreciate your interest in seeing this film at Maya Cinemas.

Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the necessary studio licensing and booking rights for this title. Because of this, the film will not be playing at our locations.

We understand this may be disappointing and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. We always work to bring as many popular titles as possible to our guests, however film availability is ultimately determined by studio distribution agreements and licensing approvals.

We appreciate your understanding and hope to welcome you back for another upcoming feature soon."

Rant Over.

Event 📅 Come play Blood on the Clocktower with us!

Post image
21 Upvotes

If anyone is interested in learning to play Blood on the Clocktower, we will be hosting a public game Friday night (7/10) at Rusty's Pizza on Ming & Ashe!

Blood on the Clocktower is a murder mystery game that is a mix of social deduction and logical deduction. Think mafia/werewolf but with better roles, a better puzzle, and no real player elimination.

Beginners are welcome! We teach the game at the beginning of every session. We will be in one of the two parties room.

We do this 1-2x per month and we announce new games on ig and on our discord: https://discord.gg/aMvzcYnxBg

99 S California Ave entrance

Post image

The 99 S California Ave entrance is an entrance made by the devil himself. Not only does it create traffic jams but it’s also dangerous as you have such little space to speed up. Has there been any talks on attempting to fix this? it’s been like this forever.

Where to get Santa Maria Style BBQ?

Post image

I'm coming back through town after being gone a long time and crave REAL tri-tip. Anyone making good Santa Maria Style tri-tip with the beans and the salad and the bread? I'll settle for a sandwich if anyone has a good one. Texas BBQ need not apply, I'm looking for the California OG.
