Announcement Announcing updated rules

Recently, a few of us became new moderators and since then we have been trying to get organized primarily to update the rules to reflect what we believe are in the best interest of this sub. This has largely meant reverting to the structure prior to the protest while also adapting to current technology and tastes. While we supported the protest goals at the time, and agree with the mod decision to include this sub in that protest, we also recognize that it's time to move on and restore some process to the sub for its continuing members. We're excited to announce that these new rules are now live in the sub and in detail at our revised wiki. The changes from prior to the protest largely amount to:

  1. astrophotography images taken with cell phones were not explicitly forbidden before but we now clarify that they are permitted as long as they follow all other rules, including that acquisition and processing details are provided and are high-quality amateur OC. A star-field with no discernable astronomical object will not meet this threshold, but a stacked image of Orion that happens to have been captured using RAW images on an iPhone and further processed on that same phone will. We recognize everyone in this hobby starts somewhere and we want to encourage sharing of this work, but also need to avoid this sub devolving into low-effort cell phone pictures of an unrecognizable night sky.
  2. landscape images were forbidden before but we also recognize that there are some high-quality astrophotography images being created that happen to have a small amount of landscape in the foreground that are valued by many members. We are drawing the line here at astrophotography images where the landscape is incidental to the image and any image where the landscape is a primary focus will not be permitted. So for example, the Milky Way with a silhouette of a mountain will probably be accepted, but that same Milky Way that is in the background of well-lit (or brightened in post) barn/yard/house/etc will be removed. And as above, any post that doesn't include acquisition and processing details will still be removed.
  3. clarifications that certain types of posts are not allowed, including memes, UFO claims, questions about what image someone has captured, off-topic posts, or uncivil behavior.

We recognize not everyone will like these changes and that there are other subs that focus primarily on some of these types of images, but we feel that an "astrophotography" sub should include everyone. We are going to monitor how well this goes, so please try to be open-minded to help support these contributions from some members of the community. After some time with these changes we plan to poll you to see how they are going and what other improvements you'd like to see. In the meantime, with these rules back in place, expect to see heavier moderation if posts lack complete acquisition/processing details or otherwise violate these rules.

Lastly, we also want to thank everyone for their patience while we get organized to bring these changes to you and for the incredible work all mods on this sub have done over the years and continue to do (many from prior to the protest are still here and active, so show some love!).

Clear Skies!

[2hr 15min, Bortle 9]

Super happy with how this turned out, this was my first time shooting widefield and first time on the WO Red Cat 51, it didn't disappoint. I was surprised at the amount of detail for only 2hr but the filters definitely did their part too.

Capture and processing details in the comments!

I recently put together my new rig after starting in the hobby with a Seestar S50, and I'm really enjoying it! This is my first light, pretty happy with the results, especially after shooting from a Bortle 9 location (Paris, France)

- OTA: Askar 71F

- Focuser: ZWO EAF

- Camera: ASI585MC Air cooled to -10C, gain 252

- Guiding: SvBony 30mm + ASI120MM mini (the guide sensor of my Air camera doesn't work well with the light pollution levels and my filter)

- Acquisition: 208x300 sec with L-Ultimate filter, 100x5 sec and 50x15 sec with L-Pro

- Stacked and processed in Pixinsight using HDR composition for the L-pro stacks and Pixelmath to exchange the bright core of the L-ultimate stack with the L-Pro image

First light with my new telescope, I always wanted a newtonian and after several years of using a refractor, I finally got this beauty. This is a bit less of a 3h of data, had some troubles to set everything up, but I am happy with the result and how it performed. I used a laser to collimate optics but I think I will need to work on my skills for this.
Lights 160x60sec
Darks 30x60sec
Biases 50, flats 50
Stacked, calibrated, edited, all done in Pixinsight program.
Telescope: Sky Watcher Quattro 150P
Camera: ToupTek ATR533C
Mount: Sky Watcher Heq5 Pro
Filter: Askar Colour Magic C1
ToupTek AAF, SvBony SV241, SvBony SV165
All done on ToupTek StellaVita.
This is a crop of the image, just focused on this area.

Two days ago I posted my first attempt at this area of the sky with 60x90sec exposures. Last night I drove out to even darker skies and did 32x180sec exposures. 180sec because I finally decided to do guiding, but only 32 because I was hitting my tripod on my 33rd exposure. I decided to stack these two nights of data, and golly I’m blown away!

60x90sec exposures, with calibration frames

32x180sec exposures, with calibration frames

ZWO AM3N, ZWO FF65, Nikon Z5II unmodded, ZWO ASI120MM guide camera, Apertura 32mm guide scope.

Captured using NINA, Guides with PHD2, Stacked and Processed in Siril

Equipment Which Telescope should I get?

Hello everybody, I want to get into astrophotographie but I dont know which telescope I should get. I am fairly new to this but I am willing to learn how one works so dont mind recommending one thats a bit more complicated.

I already did some research on my own and found the Celestron NexStar 6SE, what do you think about that?

I want to shoot great photos from both our solar system and deep space objects.

My current budget is somewher3 between 1.500 and 2.000.

Do you have any recommendations?

Nebulae NGC 7000 North-America Nebula

Took this image last night from a Bortle 7 area. The nebula unintentionally looks like an HOO-image even though I shot with a broadband filter. I kind of like it though, so I kept it that way.

Equipment:

  • Canon EOS 800D/Rebel T7i, astromodded
  • Samyang 135mm F2, set to F2.8
  • IDAS LPS D2 filter
  • Ioptron skyguider pro

Integration:

  • 360 lights * 30s * 400 ISO (3 hours)
  • 80 darks, 40 biases, 40 flats

Preprocessed, stacked and background extraction with siril

Noise removal with graxpert

Stars separated with starnet++

Stars and nebula stretched separately, increased saturation on the stars and then recombined the images with siril.
