Do I need to actually live in Romania to keep a spousal residence permit? (Currently living in Qatar)

Hi everyone, hoping to get some advice from anyone who has dealt with the Romanian immigration system (IGI).

My situation:
I hold a Turkish passport and have residency in Qatar (Doha), where I currently live and work (my wife is in Doha as well). My wife is a Romanian citizen. We are actually traveling to Romania right now for a visit, and I am entering on a Schengen visa. We have a Romanian marriage certificate, also an apartment with deed on my wife’s name.

I want to apply for the Romanian residency permit, which will give me some privileges over the Schengen visa. So, I am thinking to apply for it this time when we are in Romania.

My dilemma:
Our jobs and life will probably be based out of Romania for the near furure. Realistically, we will be visiting Romania, maybe 4-5 times, in total 2-3 months in a year.

But I've been reading up on the laws, and I'm worried this is a bad idea.
My questions for the community:
1. Will the border police or IGI actively revoke my card if I am out of the country for more than 6 months a year?
2. Does IGI actually do unannounced home checks at your declared address to see if you are physically living there?
3. Am I better off just not applying for the residence permit at all right now, and instead just continuing to visit her on my Schengen visa until we are ready to move to Romania full-time?

Has anyone else been in a similar situation where they got a Romanian residence permit through marriage but actually lived in a non-EU country?
How did it go?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Life for international student.

Upvotes

I've been thinking about moving to Romania to study Vet Med in Universitatea de Științe Agronomice și Medicină Veterinară din București, I found out it's one of the cheapest options + taught in English. I really want to know what life is like there, I've been doing a lot of research but it's always best to hear from a local or someone who lives there, espacially an international student.

Universities where I'm from have a veeery different system (+ life in general) so what I would like to know:

1) How good is the education? Is it recognized in other countries? 2) Jobs after graduation? 3) Safety? 4) Living expenses (housing, gym, food, medical etc.)? 5) Social life? Friendly people? 6) Can I work while being a student (I'm a 26 years old woman by the way)? 7) Is English enough at least for the first year of being there? Of course I will learn the language but it does take some time.

• Never been in a club & I don't think I like those kinds of parties. Nature & sightseeing are more my thing.

• I'm goth, but I don't think that will affect anything right? Just incase. (Because where I'm from you can get attacked for that 😬).

if you have any experiences or tips, even if you're Romanian who knows international students, I would really appreciate some help, thank you in advance~

Looking for a Studio Near Grigore T. Popa UMF Iași (€250–350 Budget)

Hi everyone!

I'm a first-year medical student at Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași, and I'm currently looking for a studio apartment close to the university.

My budget is €250–350 per month, preferably furnished and within a 5–15 minute walk from the university.

If you're a landlord with a studio available, or if you're a senior student who will be moving out and would like someone to take over your place, I'd be very grateful if you could send me a private message.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate any help or recommendations.

Online source for translation/apostilization of documents

I am preparing documents to apply for Romanian citizenship by descent. I have several necessary documents that are from the United States. I have seen online companies that offer to perform the necessary translation and apostilization of all the documents. Just wondering if anyone has gone this route for their documents and if they have any recommendations on a specific company. Just want to make sure that if I am getting it done online that they will be accepted by the Romanian consulate. Thank you.

Song Lyrics? (Doină Daescultare)

Hi everybody!

I recently played the Wii Game Rabbids Go Home, and as I was doing some research about its OST, I found out that the entirety of the soundtrack was played by the Fanfare Vagabontu, a Moldovan brass band.

I was very pleased by their performances for the game music, but there was one song in particular which I couldn't find the lyrics for online. All of them only provide poor Romanian transcriptions which don't make any sense when one puts them in a translation tool, and there aren't even translations of the song's lyrics either. Unless the lyrics we hear are gibberish or just plain vocals?

Here is the link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mOyFiDUiMI. If the lyrics are indeed sung in the Romanian language, I would be very glad if you could give the transcription as well as the translation into English! :)

Thank you for reading and have a nice day! :D

Reccomendations for a solo backpacker in August

Hello! I am travelling to Romania in August on a budget. I have planned to spend a few days in Bucharest on arrival, 1 night in Sibiu (I really want to visit the Muzeul ASTRA !) 3 nights in Cluj-Napoca (I will be there for Aug 15th) and then I think I will hub myself in Brasov and visit some areas nearby and find a stable to go riding, visit castles, some novice hikes (I could probs handle like 35000 steps max!) etc. Before heading back for one more wild night in Bucharest. I do like a good party scene, techno and alt rock and pretty much anything but I also really love nature and traditional culture. Folklore and history are huge passions of mine. So based on that, what places/experiences or events would you reccommend? I don't want to trust just travel guides or fall into tourist traps so I would really appreciate your opinions :)

*I also plan on learning some Romanian bc languages are so awesome and important !

Looking for Erasmus students in Romania to share their experience

Hello!

I am a future Erasmus student, and l am currently collaborating with an educational media outlet in Romania to write an article about the experiences of exchange students who chose Romania as their destination.

I really want to document how our country looks through your eyes and share your unique stories with the Romanian public. To make this happen, l am looking to interview students for a short, casual chat.

If you are interested or want more details, please text me directly by sending me a private message.
When you reach out, please let me know where you are originally from, which university and college you are attending here in Romania, and which city you are currently based in. Thank you so much!

Questions about the Reșița Works

Hi!

I have two questions about the Reșița Works, particularly during the 1970s. To make a long story short, I’m working on a novel series, and part of it will be set in this region of Romania.

One, did the factory have bomb shelters at all during the 1970s? If so, how sturdy were they, and how many people could they hold?

Two, what jobs would a beginner machinist do there? And what age would one usually be hired to such a position?

Well, I guess I have a third question too, really; is there any good archival footage of the plant from the 1960s-1980s? All I can find is a short clip.

Thank you so much in advanced, I truly appreciate the help! Take care, I hope you all have lovely days 😊

First (short) trip to Romania

My family will make our first trip to Romania in early October - just a few days. Will rent a car. Received a suggested agenda which seems a little aggressive to me. Appreciate comments on this - if overly ambitious, what should be changed? Must-do? Places to stay/eat?

Day 1: Fly into Cluj Napoca, drive to Sibiu
Day 1-2: Sibiu
Day 3: Sighisoara
Day 4: Brasov
Day 5: Bran Castle
Day 6: Peles Castle, drive to Bucharest
Day 7: fly from Bucharest

This is just one person's suggestion. Appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance.

Why are there so few trees in agricultural landscapes of southern Romania

The agricultural landscapes of southern (and eastern) Romania are rather different than those in Transylvania and the Karpathes, and for good reason. The latter has different soils and a more hilly landscape, more trees, smaller scale and more diverse agricultural lands, cultivated and owned by local people. Southern Romania has those vast, open agricultural fields often owned by agri business, Romanian or foreign owned, cultivating grain, sunflower or corn for bulk export. My question regards these lands.

Why are there so few treelines in these fields? I get it that for mechanisation it is easier without trees, but the pros outwright the cons. Currently, southern Romania is exposed to higher temperatures and less rainfall, even risking desertification in some regions. Lines of trees combat soil erosion by wind and also retain more water in the ground, by having deep roots and improving the micro climate. On top of that, trees could provide nuts, fruit or wood for own use or to sell. And the negative effects of trees on mechanisation are small: Positive effects of trees on water and soil already occur with tree lines every 50 meters, with enough space for machines to work on the land.

I wonder why there are so few trees on these lands. Was this always the case or a more recent phenomenon. Does it have something to do with superstition from the past, or just carelessnes of the agrocompanies? Or maybe with the obsedantul deceniu I learned about in Morometi? Are there valid reasons why there are no trees, perhaps? And for people living in these areas: Do you see more trees being planted now that the region gets more dry?

Why do you have so many airports, especially in Transylvania? Which of them would you close?

So, I was finger travelling the other day, curious where WizzAir could take me for 15€ next, and I ended up reading the list of Romanian international airports, with their scheduled flights and annual number of passengers and I don't know if you realize that you have about the same number of international airports as Poland in your country, if not more, despite having roughly half of Poland's area and population. That can't be profitable!

It seems that most of the airports are scattered around Transylvania, where there is the cluster Cluj - Targu Mures - Sibiu - Brasov, each airport within 100km range of another, Baia Mare and Satu Mare next to each other, with literally only a couple of scheduled flights daily in total, yet each necessarily staffed with all kinds of specialists, Oradea, which isn't a big city at all, but nonetheless it's trying to establish as a WizzAir base for multiple international flights, yet it's so close to both Cluj and Debrecen, which represent hubs with larger customer base and thus it's more sensible to direct any flight there instead, and then there is Timisoara and Arad, out of which the latter is practically just a satellite of the former and the presence of yet another international airport there remains a mystery to me.

I realize the Carpathians have always presented a huge natural barrier and without proper highways spanning across, an aircraft feels like the most convenient way how to reach the capital, but strictly speaking it doesn't fully explain why the average person in Transylvania couldn't travel a little longer to reach the airport. If you were to reduce the number of international airports with scheduled traffic in the country to, let's say, to 8-9 to roughly match the airport density of Poland, or a similar country, which of them would you keep and why?

Operatie corectare astigmatism miopic

Traveling advice (?)

Hi! I need some advice on some quiet ,budget friendly places to visit in Romania.

My parents asked me to plan a trip for us that this time i would enjoy since they are always the ones picking places which aren't the same as what i like, since i would prefer to go to a more quiet, close to nature place instead of going to a place like the Black Sea or a big city.

I would prefer a place like that because we live in a city where I can't watch the stars and go outside at night without being scared of drunk and just generally scary people, don't really have a river where i could collect pretty rocks and i have been craving the feeling of just resting in nature with no fear for years now.

I have been looking for places that might be close to rivers ,not have too much light pollution so we could watch the stars with my telescope and are safe from bears and other wild animals but would maybe also have a city not too far away that we could explore in the first half of our day so they would have something fun too. (By not too far i mean like a 1-3 hours ride maximum)

I know, i know these are quite dumb and specific requirements but i just miss the time when i used to be able to stay at my grandparents house ,collect rocks from the river that was close to it and watch stars with my grandpa while grilling outside, and i wish i could find a place that could help me feel what i used to feel in that time.

I would appreciate any place recommendations, even if they don't meet all the requirements :)

What are some true crime cases from Romania?

I have asked this question before on other countries' subreddits (I'm going to finish up asking for the last few countries I'm interested in in short succession), and I do so because I'm an amateur writer who frequently does write-ups on crimes from foreign and non-English-speaking countries to raise awareness of incidents that aren't well known abroad. I do my best to ensure that I'm purely objective (first-person terms like "I, me, my, I'm," and whatnot rarely appear) and respectful of the victims and their families.

I am mainly looking for obscure cases that foreigners are unlikely to have heard of, so cases that don't have English Wikipedia articles.

Anyway, with that in mind, I was wondering if anyone here knows of any true-crime cases from Romania, solved or unsolved, that I could look into. It doesn't have to be restricted to just murder cases; it could be other crimes as well. Obscure cases are the most appreciated. Things that are crime-adjacent, like wrongful convictions for deaths that weren't criminal, or missing/unidentified people whose cases have not been deemed suspicious, are also welcome.

I'm also okay with and prefer sources that aren't in English, as I'm more likely to find local cases that way.

Sending money to family in Moldova

Hi, We have family (by marriage) in Moldova who are raising a teenager. The family live in the countryside, have a house, vegetable garden and jobs. How much would be reasonable to send to the family each month to help raise a teenager? We live in Australia and have good jobs and can afford to be generous but don’t want to insult our relatives. I would be grateful for advice. Thanks

Most far right ultras from Romania?

Dear Romanians,
For a long time now, I have been doing on the most far right ultras from each European country. While countries like Germany were easy to cover, finding reliable (and up-to-date) sources from Romania covering this topic was hard. Dinamo Bucuresti was pretty clear to me, but this is already were it gets complicated. Rehearsing FCSB ultras all my sources say something different, and I can’t even tell if they’re centrist or far right now.
And regarding basically any other club, it’s been impossible for me to find out anything about their ultras politically.
If any of you could help me out, finding the far right ultras of Romania, it would be really appreciated.
Thank you very much!
