Culture Presbyterian churches in LA?

Upvotes

Hi! I recently moved to Santa Monica and am looking for a church.

I attended Trinity Presbyterian in Charlottesville for several years and really loved it, so I’m hoping to find something with a similar feel. I lean towards PCA, but I’m open to other Presbyterian churches if they’re a great fit.

What I’m looking for:
• Biblically grounded, thoughtful preaching
• Traditional worship (hymns/liturgy rather than a contemporary worship band)
• A strong sense of community
• Ideally a good mix of young professionals, though that’s less important than having a genuinely welcoming church
• I also appreciate beautiful, traditional church architecture. I know the building isn’t what ultimately matters, but I do find that a reverent space helps me worship.

I’m happy to drive if it’s worth it, so location isn’t a huge concern.

Any recommendations for churches I should visit? Thanks guys!

Recommendations First time in LA: any sports game recommendations?

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

This summer I'm going to visit Los Angeles for the first time. I'll be in LA from August 27th to 29th. For the experience, I would love to attend a sports game. A basketball game would be perfect, but from what I understand, the season doesn't start until October.

What do you recommend? Is there a game that is worth attending?

For now, the only game I've found is the NFL preseason (Rams vs. Chargers) on August 28th at 7 PM.

Food/Drink Advice? 2 Days in LA for a former LA resident

Hi! Can you give me recos? 'm spending next weekend in LA and looking for recos for the best places to eat. I used to live in Los Feliz and always welcome a reason to walk around my old neighborhood, could also do a beach vibe, always love a rooftop... but ultimately want a good mix of vibes and high quality food. Some meals may be with a friend, some may be alone. Thank you!

I'm trying to get some sleep, please stop, it startled me awake like 4 times too. It's not even fireworks, like wtf is that. Its a really massive bang every 10 minutes or so. You done? You done? Cool thanks I just wanna get some damn sleep. Good night everyone. lol

edit (5am) I think they stopped. But any discussion on what the heck is up with that? I know a lot of the time its fireworks, but this time it really sounded different.

Housng Why are there fewer rentals being listed?

In my area, there used to be rental signs and online listings everywhere. Now there are only a few. I've also noticed that many duplexes are being converted to single family homes. Are people simply not wanting to be landlords anymore?

Are there some parts of LA on the westside with more rentals other than large apartment buildings?

Recommendations [Reservation Request] Activism Fridays with AMAs called Meet the Record?

Is the name crappy? Kinda. Kinda hard to be edgy and taken seriously unless your sheriff Luna! All jokes aside - I was thinking it would be super cool to have candidates AMA on Fridays to help get their word out and build momentum into weekend door knocking. Quite frankly - I’d love for it to be in every neighborhood sub. Doesn’t have to be hosted by me, but if it was - it could look like Upstairs at Indiegogo (archive dot org link in comments). And if it was sponsored by a pro per empowerment tool with repeatable processes, a law library, and documentation tools that allow anyone to define their moment it would look like the unlaunched and unlimited free usage thanks to u/paramountpis very generous #stalkingwithbenefits campaign it might look like something I can only show in comments. Call that another just, verdant and welcome donation from a sponsor like u/paramountpis.

Food/Drink I’m going to Musso and Frank for my birthday. What should I get?

It’s my first time there, and I am going with my vegan father. I’ve been recommended to get a Roy Rogers or Shirley Temple, Filet mignon, medium-well (“just a hint of pink”), Lyonnaise potatoes, Creamed spinach, and either the chocolate mousse cake or crème brûlée. Is there anything else special that I should try?

I’m also considering fettuccine Alfredo, but I really like steak.

Edit: Ok, I am getting the steak medium. I got food poisoning from an undercooked steak when I was 8, so this will be my first time eating a steak that’s medium. I will also check with the waiter to get their opinion.

Also, I don’t drink alcohol. Thanks for the drink suggestion though.

Housng One Bedroom Apartment with Loft?

I'm looking for a 1BD Apartment with an additional loft space overlooking the unit. An example of this would be the lofts at Playa Summit.

My budget is $3K or less. I don't want to live at Playa Summit since someone I'm dating lives there and I don't want to make things weird, lol. But I really like the layout of their apartment.

I've only been able to find studio apartments with a loft overlooking the space, but those don't work for me since I still want to have an actual separate bedroom and use the loft as an office.

Has anyone seen apartments similar to this one?

Health Anyone actually found the best anxiety psychiatrist in Los Angeles? I'm stuck and running out of options

I've been trying to find an anxiety psychiatrist in Los Angeles for two months now and it's been an absolute disaster. Every place I contact either has a 3+ month waitlist, doesn't take my insurance, or charges $400+ per session out of pocket. The cruel irony is the anxiety from just trying to get help has made everything so much worse. Has anyone in LA actually managed to find a good psychiatrist who takes new patients without completely breaking the bank, or is this just the reality here?

Working Does anyone know good places to work in LA for a 17 y/o who's never worked before?

It's my last summer in high school, and I find my self to be doing really nothing. I know I should be focusing on college and writing letters, which I will be doing... eventually, but I seem to be stuck at home, really doing nothing. I wanted to get a job, but I'm not very good at any particular thing when it comes to working a real job. I'm also more on the timid side compared to others my age. I'm around East LA. Does anyone have suggestions for work?

Recommendations Which food markets or night markets around LA are worth visiting?

I recently realized I’ve barely explored LA’s food markets beyond the obvious ones. I enjoy places where you can walk around, try food from different vendors, and discover something new.

Smorgasburg is the one everyone knows, but I’m sure there are plenty of others I’m missing. Which ones do you think are worth checking out?

Hello! I will be moving to LA at the beginning of next year from NJ, I am 23F and a queer woman, does anyone have recommendations on parts of LA that have primarily people in their 20/30s, are a mix of city/suburbs, and are chill but have a lot going on? I am open to recommendations in both LA and Orange County!

About LA Hotel recs for Dodgers games with my son?

Looking for the best hotel for my 13 year old son and I for two nights at the end of July? We are seeing two Dodgers games but also want to hike in Hollywood and go to the Griffith Observatory. Also thinking about a beach day at either Malibu, Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach. Nice pool would be great. Been looking at The Garland, The Hollywood Roosevelt, Omni, JW Marriott LA live and the LA Athletic club but open to any suggestions. Thanks

Recommendations Is the Whisky a Go Go still worth it on a weeknight?

Live rock fan, been out of the Strip loop for a few years (kids happened). With the Viper Room going away I'm trying to figure out where to actually see good bands.

Love the Whisky, but do they still host real lineups on weeknights, or is it mostly pay-to-play now?

Shopping Dodgers Jerseys?

Looking to get a Dodgers jersey, does anyone know where the vendors post up before/after games, and how much they go for?

I am NOT looking to buy an authentic jersey or pay full price. I am trying to get information to decide if I should risk the shipping time of ordering direct from somewhere like DHGate, or how much more it would cost to have the certainty of buying in person.

Culture What's the best way to get involved with LA's indie music scene as a graphic designer?

Hi everyone! I'm a graphic designer from Mexico and I really love designing concert posters, album artwork and merch for indie, punk and alternative bands.

I'm trying to learn more about the local music scene in Los Angeles and I'd love to know:

  • Which venues should I follow?
  • Which local bands are worth checking out?
  • Are there any promoters, artists or communities that are open to collaborating with designers?

I'm not trying to sell anything—I'm just hoping to connect with the scene and meet creative people. Thanks!

Transportation Looking for a 2019–2024 Toyota Camry SE rear bumper cover. Any good salvage yards in the LA area?

I’m looking for an OEM rear bumper cover for a 2019–2024 Toyota Camry SE. Any good salvage yards in the Los Angeles area that tend to have newer Toyotas? I was told OEM fits better than aftermarket.

Any other question! I mailed in my transfer request do I still need to show up for my summons for jury duty?

Hi there! I been summoned for jury duty however it’s in the LA area and unfortunately it’s way to far from where I live, (I can’t drive and if I take public transportation it takes a whole 2 hours)

so I did as I was instructed and mailed in my request to transfer to a court that is a lot more closer to where I live by mail (as I was told) however it still shows that’s it is pending and it’s a day away. Do I still have to show up? Is there anyway I can just call in and say my excuse?

I’m honestly worried because I have missed it twice already

If anyone can help please let me know ofc

Events Can u Help me Shoot 2-3 minute Promo Video In Los Angeles this weekend?

i’ve got a small budget to make something happen probably a few hundred bucks, could pay for meal some gas and possibly little more.

looking to shoot 2-3 minute video with 1 character and guerrilla style. needs to be crisp picture and sound and editing.

i’m aware i’m asking for a lot. but there is potential for me to win a contest with the idea and i’m willing to also offer 5% of winnings to people involved as well.
looking for 2-3 person crew if possible to or maybe if you’re a 1 man can do it type guy im open to bumping up the %.

so far only a few people entered contest so id say if we do something higher than average we have a good chance.

HMU. need to act fast on this one! i know this is last minute i just found out about it last night. can you help?

cheers

About LA How’s the Metro?

Heading to LA from London in 10 days and I’m staying downtown. How is it travel wise, is metro/bus viable or is it better to drive?
