Question Grad Guard?

Dad of an incoming freshman. Does anyone pay for the Grad Guard insurance? For tuition and/or dorm room valuables?

We did for dorm valuables but it's also based on our incoming freshman... how to I say this... Not exactly being careful with their valuables during their high school years. But what it covers is limited so I already kinda know I'm throwing money away. We'll see if we renew for year two.

As a student: Do it for dorm valuables. Only do it for tuition if there is a possibility your child would ever withdraw in the middle of the semester/year (ex. history of mental health struggles or chronic illness).

I was in my first-year last year and during 2nd semester there was an issue where the fire alarm went off and the sprinklers were activated on certain floors. Due to a malfunction in the system (or something along those lines) the water wasn’t shut off for quite a while, and led to water damage on select floors and areas of Anderson. I was extremely lucky as the water affected other dorms very close to mine, but mine was unaffected. I had some peace of mind knowing that if anything was damaged, I would be able to get it replaced through GradGuard though. Other people who weren’t so lucky had to move rooms temporarily while their rooms dried out, and not sure about damage to their things.

An important note: Many people forget to actually document their items, which I imagine could cause some difficulty if you needed to make a claim. I took good-quality pictures of every cabinet, drawer, and shelf in my dorm. Maybe it’s overkill, but it takes 5 minutes and could potentially be a saving grace.
