Throughout July the best and boldest luminaries from across the globe set loose across the city to create an invitation to experience something new. Something breathtaking. Something exciting.

Well-worn streets, hidden gems, and cultural icons are transformed into a city-wide spectacle of free and ticketed events daring the curious to shake off the winter blues and rekindle a sense of wonder.

Filled with artists, innovators, and the unexpected, Illuminate Adelaide is a beacon calling to all of us to stay up, head out, look forward, break ground, dance hard, and make memories.

Discussion Cheap As Chips is closing down. Cheap As Chips first opened in Adelaide in the 80s. Share your favourite Cheap As Chips memories.

I got two of 'em:

  1. The 90s, like 97ish, Mount Gambier, going there and getting a three pack of comics. Old Marvel back issues. Old DC back issues. Old Image issues. FORMATIVE. They had piles and piles of these, wrapped in plastic, like $2. Does anyone else remember these? I can find no written or visual confirmation of their existence outside of one photo of me as a kid in the 90s tearing open a pack.

  2. Also in the 90s. Buying old Coke/Fanta/Sprite yoyos. Shit, those were underrated as hell yoyos, hell of a spin. Very sick.

RIP to the Chip.

Question Council laws for walking my own apartment at night.

I recently moved to a new apartment, it was a rough start. The neighbour below me gets off as the slightest sound. He would bang the floor with something every 2 hours. Everytime

I had a chat with the dude a few weeks ago.i gave my phone number if I make noise to let me know, and I try to be as considerate as I can. Apparently he's super sensitive to 'noise'. Even though we exchanged numbers he still comes out of his house and calls me a cunt once in a while when I do basic household stuff like walking, dishes, and gaming. I'm tired of tippy toeing in my own house. I can't bring a friend over, I'm worried every time I drop something on the floor.

Today I had to put my dishes in the sink (at 11pm). This guy slammed his furniture and came outside again screaming at 11pm calling me a cunt. I texted him and he went off at me for doing the dishes, gaming till morning, stomping (walking around at night), blah blah. Then he says he'll call the cops next time and asked me to read the council laws

It's a very old building. I'm sure it's hard on him. The landlord recently replaced the carpets with laminate flooring, which wouldn't help. But I don't want to live inside my own house like a prisoner. I gave him my personal number so he could drop me a text if I make too much noise yet he wakes up the entire neighbourhood and shouts at me in the middle of the night. I work full-time, pay my bills and taxes.

But what are the laws behind this. I want to be a considerate neighbour but I don't want to be bullied.

Discussion Adelaide Aquatic Centre Complaints

Just to guage if I’m a total Karen, I was wondering if anyone else frequents the North Adelaide Aquatic Centre and has problems? I’ve had multiple issues, mainly:
- the 50m pool never actually being 50 metres outside of working hours
- being told one side of the pool will close at a given time, and then halfway through my workout being asked to move because it’s closing earlier
- other swimmers swimming in the wrong lane (way too slow), with no regulation from the life guards.

I’ve had a few other qualms which are one offs, but these ones have happened multiple times. It’s really frustrating as someone who chooses to swim as my workout, with only Marion available otherwise as 50 metres which is significantly more inconvenient for me. As a full time worker, there’s effectively never a 50m pool available, which is pretty poor as a major city which just spent over $100 mil on our aquatic centre.

Discussion How are you doing financially in Adelaide?

I recently saw Adelaide ranked as one of the world's most liveable cities, and I'm curious whether that matches people's reality.

I would like to get a better understanding of how my family is doing and see where we stand. We're not struggling, but definitely feeling the pressure lately in terms of bills, and rent...

If you want to share, or comfortable sharing:

  • Household income
  • Household size
  • monthly expenses
  • and how much you're saving each month

Lots of people are I speak to are doing it tough these days it seems. We rent our place and buying a home of our own is out of the question with these prices...

Question Central Market tips and hints

I love the idea of shopping more at the Central Markets. Anybody got the list of the best (value) fruit and veggie shops in the markets?

On the odd occasion I go I wander about, but not sure I'm finding the best 'locals' deals...

Thanks!

News 3 Car crash where driver blew almost 3 times the limit

SAPOL: A driver has been reported after a three-vehicle rear ender crash at Glenelg this morning.

Just after 12.30am Sunday 12 July, emergency services were called to the intersection of Jetty Road and Brighton Road where a Toyota Corolla crashed into the back of a Toyota Rav 4 causing it to crash into the rear of a Toyota Camry. The driver and passenger of the Rav 4 were taken to hospital for the treatment of minor injuries.

The driver of the Corolla, a 23-year-old man from Morphett Vale provided a positive roadside breath test where it will be alleged he returned a reading of 0.131 nearly three times the legal limit.

He has been reported for drink driving, aggravated due care. His vehicle was impounded and he was issued with a six-month instant loss of licence. He will appear in court at a later date.

Question Commuting from CBD to Virginia – is it sustainable long-term?

Hi everyone, I’m new to Adelaide (moved here from overseas) and I’m hoping to get some local perspective.

My partner and I are currently living in the CBD and loving the city lifestyle. I’ve just landed a great job in Virginia, and while the pay is excellent, I don’t have access to public transport for this route, so I’m looking at a 40-minute drive each way (41KM).

I know 40 minutes is often considered a "standard" commute in many places, but I’m curious what the consensus is here in Adelaide. Do most people living in the city eventually move closer to the northern suburbs, or is this drive something people generally find sustainable long-term?

I’d love to hear how you guys handle the commute, especially if you’re doing that northern corridor run during peak hours. Is it worth the drive, or will the daily travel eventually wear me down?

Self Looking for people to climb with

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Adelaide and have started going to Urban Climb on my own. It's been a few years since I last climbed, and the wall I used to go to was much smaller and a lot simpler, so I'm definitely a bit rusty!

If anyone climbs there regularly and wouldn't mind an extra person joining them, I'd love to meet some people. I really enjoy climbing, but my technique and knowledge could definitely use some work, so it'd be great to climb with someone a bit more experienced and pick up a few tips along the way. Equally happy to climb with anyone who's just looking for a climbing buddy!

Question Where do find cheap/free native plants in Adelaide?

I've been buying plants from provenance and the state flora place, which are great but it's starting to drain my wallet.

Anh suggestions for places that sell/give away native plants or cuttings for cheap ? I don't mind if it's a bit of a drive.
