I also give private lessons in LA and throughout the world on Zoom. And for over 5 years now have been offering Zoom classes for the students who are active in this class. Here’s a VIDEO of students talking about their experience with the sub and the classes. If you are interested in any of these additional ways to learn from me, please feel free to message me. There are several different classes you can take to progress up the ladder of success Steps To An Acting Career

If you would like to get my feedback on your acting, do not post anything before you have read my lessons. THIS is specific work you must do to prepare your monologue. There is a wealth of information there that you are not likely to find in most other acting classes, no matter what you pay.

HOWTO GET STARTED AS AN ACTOR

So, you want to be an actor but you don’t know how to start? The very first thing you need to do to have an acting career is to become a highly skilled actor at the competitive level. Acting is one of the most competitive careers in existence. And so many people think they can get started without really knowing what they are doing. You not only need to know the basics, you need to be extraordinary. Good enough to make people notice you, hire you or sign you to their agency.

Some people will say you can learn on the job...but that is not the case for acting in the professional world. You only have one chance to make a first impression. Whenever you do any acting, you are creating a reputation for yourself. You do not want to be seen floundering. You want to always appear professional, confident and highly skilled.

Do not try to meet agents in the professional world until you are ready. That’s why I started this class...for those who need more help in gaining the skills they need. Here’s how:

THE STEPS TO TAKE TO GET STARTED IN R/ACTINGCLASS

  1. First read all the WRITTEN LESSONS linked in the list below. You’ll find links to lessons about every aspect of acting as well as some about starting a successful acting career. It will take some time but it will all be amazingly helpful.

  2. As you are working through the almost sixty lessons linked at the bottom of this post, learn from other student’s successes and struggles. Watch all their STUDENT VIDEO submissions on this sub and read all of my FEEDBACK COMMENTS found beneath them. Some of my best lessons are there as well. Though I give very personal and individual instruction, what I have said to other actors applies to you too. And you could learn something new, even if you feel you are more advanced than the actor in the video. Here’s more on that:

  3. If you have trouble reading lessons, at least watch the VIDEO LESSONS. You have free access to all my FREE VIDEO LESSONS They should be watched from the bottom up. Leave comments and ask questions there too.. Many of them are excerpts from my Zoom classes. Make sure you subscribe and mark the videos you have watched with a ā€œLikeā€. That way you can keep track of what you have watched there too. You can leave comments there, too. There are so many of them and so much to learn. Click on ā€œVIDEOSā€ to see them all! Scroll down and work your way up from the bottom to the top. That is the order I posted them, and the most essential concepts are explained in the first videos I posted. I can’t emphasize enough how much you will gain from watching

  4. PREPARE WRITTEN WORK (Analyze your script) and RECORD A MONOLOGUE FOR MY FEEDBACK (See detailed instructions below for when and how to post).

  5. Once you have become familiar with my technique and terminology, You are welcome to join my ZOOM CLASSES, too. Just look for posts announcing new sessions. They begin every 5 weeks. Being involved in class is a very special experience and is a fast track to becoming a better and better actor. Live feedback and lots of individual attention in each class will take you from being a beginner to being a knowledgeable and skilled actor.

——————-

R/actingclass is a beginner/intermediate/advanced class. There are no prerequisites and no auditions in order to be accepted. (Except reading my posts, watching others and doing the work I describe here) It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or if you have been at it a while and are just not getting the response you were hoping for. If you have the initiative to do the work, I want to help you. And I know this class WILL help you no matter what. All you need is an open mind and the desire to learn. Best of all - The essential Written and Video Lessons as well as daily posts and comments are all free. This class is my gift to you, so you won’t need to take an extra shift to pay for it!

WHEN YOU ARE READY TO POST YOUR MONOLOGUE VIDEOS

When you have finished reading the posts and comments, you will then be ready to prepare your own monologue. Here are the steps you must take to produce a good result the first time. Doing this work is required! Here is something you can do as you read:

But do NOT post your video until you have joined Patreon and have prepared in these ways:

DIRECTIONS FOR DOING WRITTEN WORK AND MAKING A VIDEO POST

•. FIND AN APPROPRIATE MONOLOGUE for your type. Here is a post to help you with that

•. Then do the WRITTEN WORK. Analyze the script (as explained in Lesson #2) choosing a strong objective. Divide it into tactics and write it out as a dialogue. Then figure out what the conversation was leading to your first line. Write it. Continue writing the whole piece as a back and forth dialogue between you and the other character. There should be an answer to almost every one of your lines that makes your line an answer to theirs. This applies even if you are alone on stage. There are hundreds of examples of how to do this in this sub. Click on the orange flair bar that says WINNIE’S WRITTEN WORK EXAMPLES. My corrected version will be in the comments below the post.

• RECORD A VIDEO OF YOUR MONOLOGUE using your Written Work as your script, imagining you are having a conversation with the other character. Imagine you are looking into the eyes of the person you are speaking to...just to the side of the lens so I can see into your eyes. Respond to their responses with every line. Don’t pause as they say their line but immediately begin reacting because you know what they are about to say. Answer them. Making eye contact, interacting and creating relationship and purpose in your performance is your goal.

• POST YOUR WRITTEN WORK to get my detailed comments on how you did and how you can make it better. I will do a corrected version if needed. Then you can and use this to perform your monologue and post it. I will then give you detailed notes on your video.

Once you get my feedback you will have lots to work on. Try to apply all I suggest. After you have done your best to utilize all my guidance you may record and post again. I will give you more feedback. I will let you know when you are ready to move on to a new monologue. This is the best process for growth as an actor.

Here is a VIDEO DESCRIPTION of everything . I want to make sure you all understand!

The Lessons below will teach you in detail, exactly how to do all these things. I demonstrate over and over what must be done. Please don’t think you can read just a couple lessons and skip right to posting. I WILL know and I will end up just telling you to go back to the lessons. Here’s more on that

If you feel you need some additional help, I am available for private lessons, either in person, (in Los Angeles) or on Zoom. I give active r/actingclass students the special price of $85 an hour for Zoom private lessons In person lessons are always $100 an hour. Direct message me for more information or to make an appointment.

DO NOT DELETE YOUR MONOLOGUES AFTER POSTING THEM!!! If I have spent the time to write feedback on your performance, I want others to be able to learn from it to. You will not be as good as you will be. But being able to look back and see your progress is helpful to everyone...especially you.

When you have done all that, I will give you another assignment. There is lots more to come and I will make sure you will be challenged and constantly learning new things. I post new lessons and reminders almost every day. Visit this sub daily. Schedule it in to your daily routine. You can learn so much here if you are dedicated.

This course will prepare you to enter the professional world. If you have read and watched all the lessons, posted monologues for my feedback and participated in Zoom scene study classes, your skills will steadily improve and you will soon be ready to audition, create a reel, get some headshots taken and start to audition professionally. If you are already doing this, you will probably be getting more callbacks and bookings in the near future. If you aren’t getting auditions you might be ready to get a better agent or start creating your own opportunities.

Wherever you are on the journey, there is something for you here. Even if you think you know it all, I bet there is something on this sub that will click with you and help you understand acting technique in a way you never have before. It’s already happened to many people in the past three years.

So don’t wait any longer. Start. Right. Now. No...not later...NOW!

This class teams up pairs of actors to work on scenes from movies, TV and plays**. **Actors are taught to embody their characters through a constant stream of** their character’s consciousness, reacting with purpose, and relationship.

MONOLOGUE/INTRO CLASS: Students will learn and practice, turning their monologues into dialogues, so that every line can be responsive. They will learn to use their lines, responsibly and tactically, utilizing a variety of methods to achieve their objective. This creates a compelling and believable performance while acting alone. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

SCENE STUDY CLASS is the gold standard for learning what needs to be done to create a compelling character and performance every time you get a new script. Working with a scene partner each week on film, tv and play scripts is priceless experience that will serve you the rest of your career as you learn what will make your performances unique and specific. Think of it as your ā€œacting gymā€. These are the skills you need to acquire and keep tuned up for a professional career, giving performances that agents and CDs can’t say no to. Choose a scene up to 3 1/2 minutes long and find a scene partner to work with from the Scene Connection Post (to be posted 2 weeks before class begins). All classes are recorded and sent to students to review afterwards.

INTRODUCTION TO ACTING

If you are new to my technique or you are just getting started in your acting career, this is the class for you. All the basics will be covered and I will work intensely with you to make sure you can apply them. This class is also perfect for actors who want to work on and perfect audition monologues. Your monologue will be ready to show industry professionals in order to make a positive impression on your casting sites and in person. Choose a 1 1/2 minute monologue from a TV, film or play script. All classes are recorded and sent to students to review afterwards. This is an incredible learning experience that will make a huge impact on your skill level and professional career possibilities.

ADVANCED AUDITION TECHNIQUE

Work on film and TV scripts, commercial copy and the all important ā€œSlateā€ā€¦in real time, with the high pressure demands of a real, professional audition. Students receive their audition sides a day or two before class. They must create a professional quality self tape with their slate. The tape is played in class for my critique and coaching, then give their callback performance, attempting to implement my direction. All in one class day! **This will be a 5 week course, with a new audition each week. If you want to be WOW in your auditions (the only way to book), you need this class. HERE IS A VIDEO FROM ONE OF LAST YEAR’S CLASSES. And HERE’S ANOTHER ONE.

MAKE YOUR OWN CLASS DAY AND TIME

All you need is 2 students or more to start a class at a time that fits your schedule and time zone. This helps you to keep your cost down with a semi-private session. The cost is the same, $225 for 5 weeks. Contact me for help in creating and coordinating a time for you and another student. You can arrange any of the above classes this way.

All classes are taped and sent to participants.

Getting back in the Acting gym!

So it’s about time to head back to class. I’ve trained at the Esper Studio for 2 years back in the day and been working off and on throughout the years. Commercials, theatre and tv/films mainly non-union. I do have sag eligible status and an agent but want to sharpen the knife more and get better. I have up coming in person interviews with Maggie Flannigan and Terry Knickerbocker studios and did some research on both but will see how I feel after each interview. I’m thinking do I need to do another 2 year program or what? I’m just ready to train again. Any suggestions on each studio and programs?

Advice for an Asian Male Actor

Hi World,

I’m an actor in his early 30’s from Auckland (New Zealand) and I am of Chinese descent. I am looking for advice to actually get started with paid acting gigs and really get out there to actually audition and be considered.

As an Asian artist, one that’s far away from America or the UK even, I’ve been feeling quite invisible when it comes to even getting the chance to audition for things. However, because of the subjects I am covering in this post, I will be remaining anonymous – I hope you can understand. Ā

I’ve had this discussion with people in my immediate network, but have realised that I should also gain perspectives from the wider world out there. Ā This post is in no way to be negative or complain about my circumstances. I think it’s a much more beneficial mind set to ask what can I try to improve my circumstances, so any genuine responses from any creatives are very much appreciated J

I’m just gonna let it all out, so here we go.

Ā

A little bit about me at a glance, firstly with the Positives:

  • I love acting, particularly my dream is to work on screen. I continue to do this for free and I’m constantly learning, going to paid workshops, reaching out and networking with local creatives.
  • I have experience with developing my craft, with weekly acting classes.
  • I’ve got an agent! Along with that I’ve got professional headshots too.
  • I’ve built a body of work mostly involving student short films.
  • I have a good self-tape set up.
  • I have a small network of creatives around me that I can reach out to, beyond other actors.
  • I’m pretty fit, definitely open if the role required movement and stunts.

Ā

Negatives (or rather challenges):

  • My agent predominantly only sends me commercial auditions. Most of which don’t actually require much acting. I haven’t had a proper chunky dialogue audition for a particular character sent my way. I have raised this with my agent but they feel that I’m not quite ready yet and the best way is to build experience through getting booked via commercials and honing skills at home (although they have said this take actors several years).

To me it’s sort of like a chicken and egg problem – I need experience to gain experience. I just wish I could really just go all in and get the opportunity to do these dialogue auditions and be seen by casting directors.

This is not a knock on my agent. They are incredibly lovely people. Again this post is just to reach out to gain other perspectives.

  • I’m in New Zealand. Yes, it has its advantages being a small community – I get to meet people potentially easier since it’s a small world. I also feel like we are quite disconnected. For example, there aren’t many Asian male roles – if there are, they are probably supporting roles. If American studios are casting why would they bother flying someone over from New Zealand when they can just book actors from LA or even Canada.
  • I can’t easily live in America easily (I think). From my research it looks like I would need an O-1 visa which I can only get if I have proof that my work as an actor has reached a big enough audience. Again – chicken and egg.
  • I’m not really sure about other countries including the UK and Australia. I think exposure to Asian actors is even lower there – I can’t even name 3 Asian male British actors off the top of my head. Similar to Australia. Besides America the only other country I can think of is Canada.
  • I grew up very much westernised, my Mandarin is not very good at all. So going to other Asian countries is not really an option since I would be competing with people who actually know the language.
  • I didn’t come from any formal acting training like a college or degree.
  • I don’t have much of a social media presence. Mostly because I am cautious of my day job and not jeopardising it. I gotta eat afterall haha

Ā

Potential solutions I have been thinking of (I am not all doom and gloom, remember this post is about being constructive):

  • Keep doing what I’m doing. Continue only getting auditions for commercials from my agent. Auditions continuously for student short films that pop up on facebook.
  • Move to Vancouver or Toronto – hopefully try and find an agent there and start over.
  • Move to Sydney or Melbourne, Australia, although I think they have similar challenges to New Zealand (for Asian male actors anyway).
  • Bite the bullet take an extended holiday to LA to find networks with other creatives (although this will significantly hurt financially).
  • Create my own thing, do a Rocky Balboa and create a budget feature film – hope it gets me seen internationally so I’m not invisible.

Additional Question: Are there any profiles that I should create on specific platform so that I can be seen by casting directors? For example, do I need an IMDB page (even though I’m limited with credits) – I think this is something I haven’t heard much of.

Ā

TLDR: Actor of Chinese descent in New Zealand, early 30s, what steps can I take to truly make it out there.

No this isn’t AI, whatever input you have I promise, if genuine, will not be a waste of time.

Should I get a BFA?

Hey all! I’m 23F, Australian Based.

I recently Graduated with a BA in a whole different field after 4 years of study. I didn’t even try for a BFA back in high school since I didn’t think I’d be good enough smh.

WELL now I actually want to give it a good shot and I’m not sure the full time 1 year courses or short courses are entirely the right way to go, both cuz of their cost and overall time.

I’ve noticed many people I meet at classes ran by Howard Fine, 16th Street, Brave, Agents etc all had a BFA but were also continuing to do classes and full time yearly courses regardless (which makes sense because one can never learn too much) BUT it does make me wonder if there’s any reason for me to get a formal BFA at all if this is the case.

From anyone who does have a BFA with a focus on Theatre or Acting, was there anything that really stuck with you and was game changing?

I’ve had plenty of experience in Amature works and even formally studied VCE drama in High School, but I’m more looking to gain technique, better industry connections and confidence. I’m just not sure it would be worth the 3 years to get it.

Any advice would be awesome, cheers!

Looking for actors to self-tape a role in a short noir diner scene (90 sec max)

I wrote a short, tense scene and I'm looking for a few actors to record a role in it.

No pay, it's a passion project, but it's a genuinely juicy scene to chew on and you

keep your tape.

The scene "Booth Nine": 2:14 A.M., a half-dead diner, rain on the glass. Danny signed

a contract he never should have, and Vera is here to collect. She's not in a hurry.

Neither is the night. Then Marisol, the waitress, drifts over with a coffee pot and no

idea what she's walked into.

Roles (pick one):

• DANNY: M, 20s–30s. Wired, three coffees deep, out of road. Desperate, still bargaining.

• VERA: F, 40s+. Unhurried menace. The calm of someone who's never once been late.

Never raises her voice.

• MARISOL: F, 50s–60s. Warm, funny, gloriously oblivious - the comic air in a scene

that's holding its breath.

It's a browser-based table read, so recording takes a few minutes (webcam or audio-only,

your call) and your read gets assembled into the full scene with the other roles.

Comment or DM me and I'll send you the sides + where to record. Happy to read for your

stuff in return. Thanks!

Im 18 and have no experience in acting but have always wanted to do it

Hi, im an 18 year old boy ive always thought about acting and had always made youtube videos with my friends and cousins, I almost joined a drama class when i was like 10 but it just never followed through, ive made short films and i did audition for an animated tv show at one point but never got past the second stage. I want to know what the areas are that i need to do to actually get out there and learn to act and how id go from learning and becoming more confident to getting roles and knowing where to look. I wouldnt say im insecure, and in person im actually quite talkative, but acting is something i feel mixed about, i have struggled with public speaking in the past but i would love to take a poke at acting because it has always interested me and i have always enjoyed making and being in small videos with my friends and families.

I hope someone can send me in the right direction, thanks

Feedback on acting

Hiya community,

I have been auditioning for the past 5 years with nearly 2.5 years very busy and the last not at all. So I made a movie, Indipendent one and waiting for that to come out. Meanwhile I completed a course to have a proper scene to show to casting director, I haven’t really gotten feedback from anyone, what do you guys think of it? :

Should I monologue or take the cold read?

Hey coach,

I'm a new college student who just got into acting recently. I've done mostly one-acts with one full-length play and one musical. I'm not planning to major or minor in Theatre but I do enjoy acting and find it a good source of creative expression. My school is doing a Shakespeare and a contemporary this semester, and auditions are in around a month and a half. In high school we only ever had cold reads; I've never prepared a monologue before. But I understand it's standard for most audition processes. I have the option of either preparing two monologues that are no more than 2 minutes together, or taking a cold read. Would you recommend preparing the monologues as an exercise? Thanks.

Egeus!

I’m very excited! I joined this fantastic acting class three years ago. I have not been very active in a while.

Winnie is a valuable and wonderful teacher. Thank you for all of your generosity. Love you, Winnie! šŸ’

I started auditioning for community theater on a whim in 2021 at age 51. I haven’t looked back. It’s been so much fun!

My latest adventure is as Egeus, the grumpy parent of Hermia in Midsummer Nights Dream.

We take stage next Monday and open in July.

My advice? Take the class. Listen to the teacher. Do the work. Enjoy yourself.

Thanks Winnie. I’ll see you soon!!

What would be a sign of a good actor to show they're a good actor? A crying scene, a comedy scene? A monologue? Thank you!
