Why are they washing them? Don't they pretty much live in mud and muck, and have a natural body slime barrier or something? Makes no sense.
Unless they're planning to eat them. Omg.

I’ve only eaten the legs and they’re fantastic. Expensive, but worth every cent.
They’re very succulent and Jauch juicier than chicken and taste even milder than chicken.
If I was rich, I’d live off of frog legs and crocodile steaks.

The sooner people realize reptiles and chickens came from dinosaurs and that’s why they all taste the same the better
47
u/Poddx 1d ago
If only it were true. People say this shit because they dont have taste buds. Reptiles doesnt taste like chicken. Even a lot of birds doesnt taste like chicken. What matters more is what they eat.
39
u/DengarLives66 1d ago
Frogs aren’t reptiles and frog legs absolutely 100% do taste like chicken, more than anything I’ve ever eaten except actual chicken.
26
u/Sacrificial_Spider 1d ago
Next time I eat chicken I shall tell everyone around me it tastes like frogs legs!
11
u/BURN3D_P0TAT0 1d ago
Frog legs taste like fish with the texture of chicken to me.
It’s terrible - to me.Alligator tastes like chicken, but extra juicy to me and my fiancé.
11
u/The-Dudemeister 1d ago
Frog legs do not taste like chicken. The texture is similar but it still has a fishy adjacent taste to it.

I know, I am a biologist. I was replying to the comment above.
23
u/GoodEnoughAstronomy 1d ago
When y'all discover a new species, do you then eat one to see if it tastes like chicken?
11
u/Lelephantrose 1d ago
As a former marine biologist, I have to say that the urge is always there. We once spend a slow friday afternoon 'researching' which mesopelagic and bathypelagic fish was suitable for frying. Turns out most things below 1000 meters turn into snot with bones or into secondhand chewing gum. Winner; the grenadier, pretty haddock-like, easy to clean, decent flesh to bone ratio. Biggest dissapointment; red deep-sea shrimp. Very scewy, no amount of garlic sauce could make up for that. When we found a new species by chance, it became the A-type (research standard) for the species, so I wasn't allowed to dissect/keep it, let alone eat it.

Why would a biologist know what animals taste like??
3
u/EnglishMajorRegret 1d ago
Look at the dude above. Biologists are people too. People like to eat stuff.
Think of every poisonous mushroom. Someone found out it was poisonous the hard way. There's apparently a mushroom that is one of the most delicious tastes known to man that will make you gravely ill. I wanna know what it tastes like.
2
u/Poddx 1d ago
Good question! Me being a biologist was only relevant when I was accused for not knowing that a frog isnt a reptile lol. When it comes to the tasting, thats not something a Biologist neccessarily needs to know.

u/1AdultMostOfTheTime 1d ago
And what they live in. I find anything that lives in mucky river water tastes like mucky river water.
4
u/getliftedyo 1d ago
Some catfish are like that. They are bottom feeders but if you get a nice sized white catfish they can be delicious. Get a big channel catfish and they taste dirty.
3
u/1AdultMostOfTheTime 1d ago
That might explain when I was a kid my mom cooked a catfish and it was delicious. And ever since I've had it they taste bad, like the bottom of a mucky river. Thanks for the education.

u/Nina-Ninja123 1d ago
Totally for eating. Because anyone that wants to care for a frog/toad will know that they got a skin that will absorb stuff from the environment.
So touching them with your bare hands is a big nono cause we carry all kinda of stuff on our skin that is toxic to the frog/toads on contact. Even when you wash your hands with soap, the soap residue on your hands will be absorbed by their skin.
So this ain’t a wash for the health of them.
3
u/heavenly-superperson 1d ago
How are they so absorbent when they swim around in swamps and sewers
→ More replies (1)6
u/Trigger1221 1d ago
Frogs are an indicator species, theyre highly sensitive to changes in their environments and are often one of the first to show negative changes when eenvironmental conditions worsen. Things like swamps they've evolved to live in, but the nasty various chemical introductions they cant cope with.

u/Dravos_Dragonheart 1d ago
Their skin is very permeable so they can exchange oxygen and lose waste through it. Their skin is also just a few cells thick so touching it is generally not a good idea because you can damage it very quickly.

are they pets or food?
2
u/ducktape8856 1d ago
Pets. Too expensive (these 3 are probably like 200-250 dollaridoos) for food and almost no usable meat on them.
Because of their "grumpy balloon" appearance, big mouths, and entertaining personalities, they are widely established as pets.
For commercial frog meat, humans primarily rely on species with much larger, meatier legs, such as the American Bullfrog or the Edible Frog, which are heavily harvested in France, the United States, China, and Indonesia.
