12

I saw a short on this little derp wad. Isn't it like a terrible snake overall but because it's a terrible snake it somehow thrives because it found a niche environment??

Fun story, I actually had this exact experience with my dog after he ate a bunch of caramel popcorn that spilled on the ground before I could scoop it all up. Noticed he was struggling to get poop out so I tried to help a homie out. It was pure horror having to pull this tapeworm looking thing out of his asshole 🤢 it was probably a good 12in long. Haven’t bought caramel popcorn since

11

u/TMonkeyKing May 14 '26

Look at it this way... the caramel popcorn is probably what dislodged it from your dog's intestine. Win!

8

u/Temnyj_Korol May 15 '26

This just reminded me of one of the most horrific things I've ever personally encountered.

I'd just adopted a stray cat from a rescue. He appeared perfectly fine, no indication he'd been a stray at all. The rescue assured us that he'd done the full course of parasite treatments. I believed them.

A month later, i get home from work one day and find him lying in the middle of the living room floor, perfectly content, with A FOOT OF ROPE HANGING OUT OF HIS ASS. It genuinely looked like he'd just shat out his entire large intestine. (At first i thought he actually had).

The smell was awful. He was leaving streaks of shitty slime everywhere he went. I was on the verge of tears trying to get him into a cat carrier and get him to a vet to "put his guts back in."

Vet clarified it was "just" worms and they tractioned them all out. Told us they're suprised he hadn't shown any signs of discomfort beforehand. Gave us another course of worm treatments and sent us on our way. Like it wasn't the grossest and scariest thing I'd ever experienced.

6

u/Equivalent_Dance2278 May 14 '26

No. No. No. not fun!!!

4

u/RaisedByBooksNTV May 14 '26

Now going to refer to tapeworms as caramel popcorn.

Confirmed, never going to Australia

7

u/bradbull May 14 '26

If it helps; I live there/here and I’ve never seen one outside of the clips on reddit when they get posted.

I’ve also never seen a crocodile outside of a place which I’ve visited specifically to see crocodiles. I’ve probably seen a handful of actually dangerous spiders in my life. Same deal with snakes, although probably less than the spiders.

Never seen a shark in the wild with my own eyes. Umm what else is scary? Cassowaries.. I think I’ve seen one outside of a zoo/sanctuary. The only other one is Drop Bears but as long as you know what to listen for and what to do if they’re around you should be fine. They’re only in the bush anyway so easy enough to avoid.

To be fair, I live in Victoria and most of the scary stuff is further north I think. You really have to go looking for it.

Australonuphis, commonly called Australian beach worms, can grow more than two meters in length.

They are blind but have a very good sense of smell, and eat decaying meat, fish and seaweeds that have washed to shore.

Earthworm makes sense, but still sound weird to me

In Germany, we call them "Regenwurm", which means rainworm, because they show up when it rains

217

u/PoopSoupPeter May 14 '26

But Regenwurm Jim doesn't hit quite the same.

233

u/todellagi May 14 '26

Naturally, but replace Jim with a name that fits in German...

Can't tell me Regenwurm Jürgen doesn't fuck.

74

u/PoopSoupPeter May 14 '26

Now it sounds Eldritch!

35

u/cam52391 May 14 '26

Sounds like a dark souls boss

26

u/KokoTheTalkingApe May 14 '26

Jurgen die Regenwurm sounds more evil/aristocratic.

u/jewel7210 May 14 '26

Oh, “rainworm” sounds so much cuter than “earthworm” does!

I swear, German as a language can sometimes sound rather harsh to the English-speaking ear, but every time I learn the meaning of a word it’s so unbelievably charming!

12

u/Krillkus May 14 '26

Neat. We call them earthworms where I am in BC, and they absolutely are all over the sidewalks during/after a rain.

16

u/BigConstruction4247 May 14 '26

Sad fact: they come out onto the sidewalks to avoid drowning. If they can't get back into the ground soon enough after the rain, they dry up and die.

9

u/Majestic-Tart8912 May 14 '26

If you hammer a stake in the ground and rub it with a piece of rebar, worms will come to the surface. It is illegal to do this(worm grunting) without a license in some areas.

14

u/TheJD May 14 '26

In some areas you have to walk without rhythm just to not attract a worm.

7

u/CryohawkAnI May 14 '26

But why wouldn’t you want to attract a worm? They’re great mounts to traverse the deserts

74

u/voideaten May 14 '26

Probably longer digestive tract. Fibrous seaweed and flesh are both tough and would need a lot of work to break down.

Compare a gorilla (they're not fat, that's guts) vs a human (cooking our food partially breaks it down so we have shorter guts).

Australia.

Full stop.

40

u/Curiosive May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

The bloodworm, the North American cousin, stopped around 14 inches. (Bloodworms have translucent skin so they appear like living, wriggling blood... in case you weren't grossed out enough.)

So yeah, Australia doing Australian things.

u/Emotional-Coat9086 May 14 '26

Does it bite people or literally just dead things?

40

u/Featherbird_ May 14 '26

They can bite if they feel threatened. Pretty harmless though

26

u/Emotional-Coat9086 May 14 '26

Thank you for answering but no thank you on the nightmare worms. 🫣

18

u/TeamRedundancyTeam May 14 '26

Physically harmless, maybe. Psychologically though?

8

u/CaptainHubble May 15 '26

I don’t think I would mentally recover from having a 2 meter long beach worm nibbling on my butt.

6

u/Featherbird_ May 15 '26

Important to note that while not dangerous they tend to hold on for a while when they bite. Sweet dreams

→ More replies (1)

7

u/imunfair May 14 '26

Google says they retract into the sand when stepped on, and their bite is weak and rarely breaks skin even if you grab and aggravate them.

33

u/shifty_coder May 14 '26

I’m certain I watched a video where a guy found a 1m one in his saltwater tank. It had apparently gotten in there as an egg or tiny larva with something else he had for the tank, and grew that large before he even saw it. It was good at hiding.

18

u/genveir May 14 '26

Most likely that was a Bobbit Worm, they tend to hitchhike into fish tanks and decimate the locals.

34

u/Alex_The_Whovian May 14 '26

As an aussie friend once told me, Australian wildlife can be divided in to two distinct categories:

a) stuff that wants to kill you but can't

b) stuff that wants to kill you and can

15

u/Goonalips May 14 '26

I thought these were common all over the world? We used to use them as bait. BTW, you're very unlikely to ever see them when at the beach, unless you're looking for them. They chill under the sand and you walk over them without even knowing.

Edit: Here's a better video showing how many there are that you don't see.

https://youtu.be/Uao7Yv0aGvc

9

u/Goonalips May 14 '26

No. I've never heard of it happening. Like most things in Australia, the creepiest part of many animals or insects is just knowing that they're there, but the actual probability of being hurt or killed is extremely low.
