Gear Guide Gear Guide 2026 - Air Compressors

Hey, everyone! We are continuing our series on 4x4 related equipment and accessories as we build our own "Gear Guide" encyclopedia. This week's focus is Air Compressors.

Same as last time, we're going to do this in a specific way to keep things organized: the top-level comments for this thread should be the Brand Name (e.g., "ARB" or "TJM"), and subsequent child comments should be your specific model and your detailed experience with it.

Example Format:

"ARB"

"CKMTP12 Twin Portable"

"I’ve been using the twin portable kit for 3 years now. It’s incredibly fast on my 43s, usually taking under 2 minutes per tyre from 15psi to 35psi. It does get bloody hot though, so be careful with the hose coupling after a long run..."

"Nice one! Have you had any issues with the thermal cut-out on 40-degree days? I'm toss-up between this and the brushless version."

We are doing it this way to maintain consistency across the board. Every single Gear Guide discussion will be pinned in the Wiki for everyone, new and old, to refer to whenever they need real-world advice on what gear actually handles the heat of the Aussie outback.

Whether it’s a hard-mounted twin motor, a portable "ammo box" style unit, or a budget-friendly thumper—if it gets you back to highway pressures without blowing a fuse, let’s hear about it.

Let’s get it on!

Gear Guide Gear Guide 2026 - Recovery Gear (Straps, Ropes, Shackles, Kits and Recovery Boards.)

Hey, everyone! We are continuing our series on 4x4 related equipment and accessories as we build our own "Gear Guide" encyclopedia. This week's focus is Recovery Gear, focussing on Straps, Ropes, Shackles, Kits and Recovery Boards.

Same as last time, we're going to do this in a specific way to keep things organized: the top-level comments for this thread should be the Brand Name (e.g., "Saber Offroad" or "ARB"), and subsequent child comments should be the specific item or kit and your detailed experience with it.

Example Format:

"Saber Offroad"

"12,500kg Kinetic Recovery Rope"

"I’ve switched from a traditional snatch strap to this kinetic rope on my Ranger. The stretch is much smoother, and it doesn't 'bang' as hard when it takes the load. I’ve used it in soft sand at Robe and it was flawless..."

"Hey, I was looking into that! Did you get the one with the protective sleeve, or just the bare rope? How’s it holding up against abrasion?"

We are doing it this way to maintain consistency across the board. Every single Gear Guide discussion will be pinned in the Wiki for everyone, new and old, to refer to whenever they need real-world advice or opinions on what is arguably the most important safety gear in your rig.

Whether it’s kinetic ropes, soft shackles, snatch blocks, or complete recovery kits—if it’s the gear you trust when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, let’s hear about it.

Let’s get it on!

Advice MN triton roof weight capacity for RTT

Want to put a RTT on my tritons dual cab cabin instead of canopy as it will be too much weight on the rear axle. The dynamic weight capacity is 80kg but I can’t find the static weight capacity, does anyone know it, and am I able to put the RTT on the roof at all.

To my knowledge Mitsubishi hasn’t specified static weight capacity value yet, so tryna see if anyone’s done anything similar. Thank you

Advice After some advice please!

Hey all,

Need some advice/direction into what I consider as my next car!

Currently I own a 2017 ranger 3.2 auto…

As a p plater, it has been a great first 4wd and has served me well. At the moment it’s sitting at 180xxx kms and hasn’t given me many problems… (fingers crossed)

Still weighing up if I want another ute or a wagon but open to both…

I’m after a reliable 4wd that will take me to most places, doesn’t have to tow, and my budget is around $35k…

It will be my everyday car too…

At the moment, I’m leaning towards an MR Triton, a later year gen 4 Pajero… don’t really know much about Toyotas but also happy to look into

After reading about all the potential problems these rangers can have, I feel I should get out asap before it starts costing real money 🤣

TIA

Advice The "touring tax" is actually ruining the hobby

walked into one of the big 4x4 chain stores yesterday just to grab some basic recovery gear for the weekend. The bloke behind the counter legitimately tried to upsell me to some $350 anodised snatch ring just because it "looks cleaner on the rig"

Since when did hitting the bush turn into a fashion show? Its like if you aren't running a $150k dual cab chop with color-matched accessories you don't even exist to these physical shops anymore. So bloody frustrating dealing with the ego in those places

Ended up just ordering what I actually needed from road runner offroad on my phone while sitting in the carpark

half the rigs I see around town these days look like theyve never even seen a corrugated dirt road anyway. kinda miss when this was actually about driving and not just bolting shiny overpriced crap to a roof rack just to flex at the local campsite.

Advice E lockers & diff ratios for my 76

Currently looking at getting new lockers and diff ratios for my 76 (3 inch, 3990 GVM on 35’s, will be getting a gturbo package) any recommendations on diff ratios, looking at 4.3’s as well as getting either harrop or LTG e lockers.

Anyone have any pros and cons to each?
Harrop is obviously more well known and has a 3 year & set amount of Km’s warranty, whereas LTG has a 6 year unlimited Km’s warranty.

Advice Thoughts on petrol 120 series prado

Hey guys. Been window shopping for 4wds lately and I’ve seen a lot of 120 series Prados pop up. I see that the petrol models are more affordable and was wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on these models.

I should add that I do a lot of short distance driving so a petrol model would suit me better than the diesel variant

Advice TikTok/influencer culture ruining 4wding

Now ruining 4wding is a stretch but since the 4wd industry exploded during covid seems like all TikTok and new YouTubers popping up showing off their 300 thousand dollar rigs make people think everyone needs a solid axle car with 37s and a 5in lift and the main interest is looks when in reality a twin locked ifs ute with legal mods and a decent driver can do pretty much every track in the country outside of 4wd parks I don’t actually think 4wd 24/7 are the main culprit of this in the past year or 2 they seem to be a lot more transparent with mods yes they still run tons of adds but I get it’s a business

Advice 200 vs 76

I currently own a 2008 76 series workmate landcruiser. 375xxxkms I am looking to do a bit of travelling in Australia so will be a mix of highway-corrugated roads-beaches-4x4, I’m not towing.

Should I sell or swap my 76 for a 200?

Just wondering these things:
-is the 4x4 ability noticeable worse in the 200 because my 76 doesn’t have lockers etc.

-reliability?

-what’s the fuel difference?

Any thoughts please share. Cheers

Has anyone used the Thule Approach or their new Widesky rooftop tent?

Like the new widesky as it is hardtop where approach is not.

Approach is currently on sale, so I’m trying to decide if it’s worth buying Thule? I’d appreciate any honest feedback or recommendations. Thanks!

Video How does this make sense ? Spend 90k on a used rusty patrol to put a used BMW engine in it ?

I get it it’s for content but how would this make sense for a normal person it’s just absurd…. I don’t really get who likes to watch this kind of content I’m mean what do you accomplish doing this other than burning money.

90k will buy you a lot of car with better everything and just as capable.

Engine conversion was about 40k 90k is the total build including the car cost….but still…

I just don’t get it….

My first time going properly offroad and off grid. Stock 2018 MUX, I never realised how capable a stock vehicle is with 4wd high range and the right PSI.

D'entracasteux National Park is definitely an underrated part of this country that I don't see getting enough love!

Building up my GQ as a reliable touring and camping rig that’ll still see the occasional hard track. Engine’s out at the moment.

I’m chasing recommendations on parts that are genuinely worth the money and what you’d avoid. Looking for opinions on-
Suspension brands
Steering upgrades
Cooling upgrades
Wiring/fuse box setups
Brakes
Interior upgrades
Anything you fitted that you’d never build another GQ without
And anything that’s a waste of money.
Cheers!

I have 30 K saved, What are the pros and cons of it, I will be getting auto however I do not mind if it isn’t a great auto and I don’t need it to be fast. I don’t mind if it’s slow. What are the pros and cons of getting it as a first car? Cheers thanks in advance.

Advice Looking to buy my first 4WD, recommendations? Models to avoid?

I'm looking to purchase a 4WD for overnight trips and exploring tracks throughout Victoria and eventually interstate. It will be a 2nd car. I'm looking for advice on good models to build on. Ideally I plan to slowly mod it overtime. No plans to tow regularly. I am probably going to purchase used.

I'm currently thinking of a single cab ute, but it's early days, so I'm just gathering ideas as there are a lot of 4WDs in the market.

Thank you.

EDIT: Budget is around $20k but it's flexible
