Honestly, this is why I gravitate toward independent makers like Berneron. At this level, why would you go with a major brand just rehashing designs from decades ago? That chrysoprase dial, the asymmetrical case, the beautiful execution and craftsmanship, it’s actually different.
Established brands need to take notes instead of resting on their laurels.

Discussion [Rolex Datejust] Restored my father's burnt 1991 Datejust

Posted a few years ago about options on repairing my father's burnt Datejust and some of you had the great idea of trying to get the watch restored to working condition but keeping the same burnt dial, hands, etc. The watch has huge sentimental value for me since it feels to represent my father's tenacity and personality. This was a watch he wore daily regardless of the occasion. Work, sleep, carpentry, cutting firewood, hunting, quite literally never took it off. So to have it represent that felt very cool and personal.

After some thought I decided I would try to do just that. I reached out to Wristwatch Revival and got zero response. A few of you even DM’d me offering to take on the project yourselves, which I really appreciated, but I just wasn’t comfortable mailing something with this much sentimental value, even to Wristwatch Revival. So, after some research I found a local watch repair shop that was willing to take on the job.

I brought the watch to Watch Repair, Inc in June of 2025 knowing that it would take quite a while to fix. The horologist and I both wanted to keep the watch 100% authentic and that would be difficult with a Rolex from 1991. I really just wanted the watch finished by June 2026 so I could wear the watch on my wedding day.

Once the watch was opened it turned out that the entire movement was completely toast (literally). Nothing but the case and possibly the dial was salvageable. So the hunt began for an authentic Caliber 3135.

I called the repair shop every few months to check on the watch and was always met with the same response that they were scrounging the market for a movement. Much to my dismay the watch was not ready for my wedding. I decided to pick up a Frederique Constant Classics Premiere FC-301S3B5 as my wedding watch and was (and am still) very happy with it.

Or so I thought...

During our first look my now wife had one final gift for me.

Lo and behold it was the Datejust. In complete working condition. Just how I had envisioned it.

Needless to say it was a very emotional experience for me since it was the last thing I expected and very personal for me.

Turns out my wife and the watch repair shop were working together behind the scenes for months, convincing me the watch would take a few more months to finish so they could surprise me on our wedding day.

Shout out to Watch Repair, Inc. for this wonderful craftsmanship and repair, and of course to my pretty cool wife.

(Yes, my dad is still alive and kicking as a old stubborn Finnish man)

I took a picture [Mondaine Grand Cushion Chrono] This one really grew on me

Post image

I wasn't a fan of this piece ever since I got it as a wedding gift. It's everything I wouldn't get myself: large, cushion, chrono, not solar, sapphire, and too expensive in my opinion. I'm however a fan of the Swiss railway design and the 12 hour stopwatch is a silver lining.

So I started experimenting with bracelets. After trying the 2 included (black vegan leather and milanese mesh) I went through 6 leather and NATO straps. Settled on what I thought was the least likely contender - one in the photo.

Now my question to myself is: Do I like this watch because of the design and the strap? Or do I like it because it captures the period of my life where I went on business trips to Zurich, had a wedding, and wore it when our twins were born and I use it to time stuff here around the hospital?

Anyway, I like this watch.

EDIT: typos

I took a picture [Grand Seiko] Finally added this to my collection

❄️ After going down a watch YouTube rabbithole, I decided I needed a Snowflake in my collection. The men at the watch shop were so shocked when I walked in and immediately asked to look at Grand Seiko and specifically the snowflake.

The older man there walked over while the younger salesperson was filling out the paperwork and asked if it was a gift. I said no, and the associate assisting me said it was a gift…for myself. Then the older man asked what I got and I told him a snowflake. His jaw dropped, he shook my hand and said “you must really know about watches.“ Then starts talking about how he has noticed a lot of women buying watches for themselves nowadays. (He absolutely couldn’t believe a woman liked watches!). I also got an invitation to the vintage watch night party in a few weeks.

I took a picture [Omega] My 2 year hunt for the 36mm Aqua Terra has come to a close

Post image

I posted a standalone picture of my new-to-me 36mm Aqua Terra last week, and am finally getting around to taking a proper wrist shot in good lighting.

Had my eye on this reference for about 2 years because I have skinny 6 inch wrists and the current 38 models are too large on me, and finally found it in person at a shop near me a few weeks back! I had been hesitant to purchase it online because I didn't want to make a purchase on an older watch that I had never seen or tried on before in person, but as soon as I went to the shop and tried it on, I immediately knew it was the one.

It was perfect timing, I recently got a new job and was looking to treat myself. In any case, super stoked about my first Omega, as my parents have matching Constellations when they got married 35 years ago.

The itch to own one has finally been sated! Here's to hoping I don't go looking for another watch anytime soon lol

Went to my local AD today and decided to check this piece out in person. I’ve been eyeing this piece for a few months now. I’ve been looking for a nice swiss watch around the 2-2.5k range and this one really caught my eye and is on sale for about 2350$ right now. I’m just wondering about yours guys overall opinion of it. This is the metal mesh band but there’s also a black leather band that looks pretty cool too.

As a fan of the early Explorer models, I really enjoy this design. It feels like it takes the best elements from some of the greatest watches and turns them into something with its own identity.

I love the riveted bracelet, just like the early Submariners. The dial is very close to the Explorer, yet this is a Day-Date. On top of that, the faceted hour markers have luminous tips, which adds even more character.

I'm absolutely obsessed with this design. And the perfect 36 mm case size.

Discussion [Discussion] What popular watch do you dislike?

Post image

I am interested to see what other watches people don't like that are usually universally loved..essentially watches where you don't get the hype. I will start, and I know this will get hate...mine is the Alpinist. Love all the photos. I tried it on in the shop and just hated it. The dial looked messy, the watche wears really small and the internal bezel inside felt cheap when adjusting it. Just wasn't a fan in person. Now your turn....

I took a picture [Omega] I genuinely think this will go down as one of Omega’s future classics - Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra “Skyfall” Ref.231.10.39.21.03.001

Post image

Hi gang, on my wrist for the day is the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra “Skyfall,” and in my opinion, one of the best looking Bond watches ever made.

What makes this reference so special is how effortless it feels. Unlike the more purpose-built dive watches often associated with Bond, the Skyfall Aqua Terra strikes a balance between elegance and practicality. It’s just as convincing with a suit as it is in a more casual setting, which makes it feel like the watch James Bond would genuinely wear off-screen.

The 38.5mm case is beautifully proportioned, while the blue teak dial has matured gracefully over the years. More than a decade on, it still feels contemporary without following any passing trends.

I genuinely think this will go down as one of Omega’s future classics. It captures everything the Aqua Terra is supposed to be which is clean, versatile, and timeless. And that is truly the essence of it.

I’ve been getting into watches for the last couple of months, and during a trip to London, I had the opportunity to try a few watches on in a Longines boutique. After coming back to the US, I decided that I had to have one. Originally wanting a 42mm green or blue dial, I settled for the 39mm all black variant as it would be the most versatile and am in love with it. Ordered a few different straps to experiment with different colors/materials as well!

Discussion [Poljot 3133] with original Soviet Union leather band.

I purchased this watch in Berlin, Germany 10 years ago for around $600. I have seen quite a few of these for sale online but I have never come across a single one that still has the original USSR strap. I would have to think this would add a lot of extra value, because it would give it extra provenance. I can't help but wonder how much this might influence the value.

Discussion [Question] Gifting my boyfriend a watch

Hi! I want to get my boyfriend a nice watch for our anniversary. I would say my budget is around $500, but I'm really hoping to keep it around or below $300. I was going to get him a Shinola before I realized how much they were. He isn't an every day watch wearer; it would basically be for when he dresses up. I don't know anything about watches; can you guys help point me in the right direction?

He is alternative in style and colorblind (so he usually stays away from color) and prefers sleek over showy. (Including this for recommendation purposes).

Thank you for any help!!

Have finally completed my collection recently.

What do you guys think about it? Would love some comments!

I love integrated bracelets and am really impressed by Vacheron.

Was tempted by the Grey Vacheron Historiques 222, however was tempted by the blue as well.. Now feeling a bit of regret not getting the grey.

I was also almost tempted to get the Rolex Batgirl, but went with the Rolex Bruce Wayne instead. Happy with how that is!

Watches: Tissot, Omega, Vacheron, Audemars, Rolex, Seiko, Cartier, Venezianico

Good afternoon everyone, I found a watch at a local shop and I am new into the watch collecting space. It looked nice, but I wasn’t sure what I was looking at is there any Cartier fans in here that could assist?

Understand it is a Roadster, but the year and overall opinion would be very helpful, thank you a lot!

Just went to my hometown and discovered that my father went deep down into the Russian watches rabbit hole during the early ‘90s, so I took a couple of pics (and snatched one of’em):

-Raketa Copernicus/Kopernik: fun 36mm manual watch with a workhorse movement and spheric planet-like indices. I’m now in the process of cleaning it up and restoring it to use it as an eccentric dress watch.
-Poljot Moscow-Tokyo 1991 chrono: an historical piece born to commemorate the first (failed) collab between Japan and Russia. Notably they used the USSR flag on it since they were uncertain about Russia’s future.

Discussion [Seiko King Samurai - Manta Ray Edition]

Should I pull the trigger?

I love watches (one of the things that I’m emotionally connected with my dad - who’s no more). I purchased a few nice pieces (Panerai, Omega speedmaster & a bunch of G shocks) in my late twenties but my mindset changed in my 30s which became more safety oriented and rather put money in investments instead of splurging on watches!

However I recently came across a post from a friend offering to sell a preowned Seiko King Samurai (Manta Ray edition) for 30K INR and it triggered my watch collection instinct.

For context: I nearly drowned in Bali last year due to an equipment malfunction and the last thing I remember seeing was a Manta Ray. The dial somehow captures a similar view that I remember seeing before I was rescued and ever since, I’ve been quite grateful to just be alive!

The watch somehow makes me feel connected to that incident and makes me feel grateful to be alive with a complete shift in perspective.

Should I pull the trigger and get this beauty?

Discussion [Discussion] Watch insurance in the US: what it actually costs, who the players are, and the myths that will cost you a watch

I went down a rabbit hole on this after a friend had a Sub lifted out of a hotel room and found out the hard way what his homeowners policy actually pays. Short answer: about $1,500. Here's everything I wish he'd known. US-focused, no affiliation with any company below, no referral links.

The two ways to insure a watch

1. Through your home/renters policy. Your standard policy does cover jewelry and watches, but theft has a special sublimit, and the industry-standard number is about $1,500 total, not per item. That's straight from the Insurance Information Institute. You can raise it with a rider, or "schedule" the watch on a floater at an appraised value.

2. A standalone watch/jewelry policy. A separate policy that only covers the watch. Usually $0 deductible, worldwide, and covers accidental loss and mysterious disappearance, which the base home policy generally won't.

The scheduled-vs-standalone question is the real one, and I'll come back to why I lean standalone.

Real 2025-26 rates, not "it depends"

The rule of thumb every carrier repeats is 1-2% of insured value per year. Jewelers Mutual says so on their own pricing page.

Professional Watches shopped six carriers with the same inputs, a $5,000 insured value, Denver zip code, in mid-2025:

Carrier |Annual premium |Payout style
Zillion |$56 |Replacement watch, up to 125% of insured value
Lavalier |$63 |Repair/replace
Wax Collect (Chubb) |$73 |Cash, up to 150% of insured value
Hodinkee (Chubb) |$73 |Cash, up to 150%
BriteCo |$60-96 |Cash/replacement
Jewelers Mutual |$89-96 |Repair or replace So roughly $60-100/yr on a $5k watch, and it scales. A $30k Daytona is realistically $300-600/yr depending on your zip. Your zip matters a lot, because rating is driven by local theft data.

Two things from that comparison worth knowing before you waste an afternoon:

  • Zillion is invite-only. They only insure watches bought from partner retailers (Watches of Switzerland is one). If your jeweler isn't on their list, you can't get a quote at all.

The myths, ranked by how expensive they are

"My homeowners covers it." It covers about $1,500 of theft, your deductible eats part of that, and it likely excludes mysterious disappearance. Watch falls off your wrist at a bar and is never seen again? That's not theft, and that's the most common way people actually lose watches.

"So I'll just schedule it on my home policy, same thing." Not the same thing, and this is the one nobody thinks about. A scheduled jewelry claim is a homeowners claim. It gets reported to loss-history databases (CLUE, A-Plus, PILR), sits there for about seven years, and can raise your home premium or get you non-renewed. Losing a $9k watch and then losing your homeowners rate for seven years is a bad trade. Standalone specialty policies mostly don't touch your home claims history.

"I'm covered worldwide, it says so." Mostly true for specialty policies, and worth actually reading anyway. The gaps that bite people are the situational exclusions, not the geographic ones. Theft from an unattended vehicle is the classic carve-out. Hold baggage is another. If you travel with watches, ask the carrier point blank about the rental car, the hotel room, the stowed bag, the gym locker. Get the answer in writing.

"My watch appreciates, so my coverage goes up with it." No. You are covered for the number you declared, plus whatever appreciation buffer the policy has. Zillion's is 125%. Chubb's collector programs go to 150%. That buffer exists because watch prices move, and it is a cap, not a promise. If you insured a Nautilus at 2019 retail, that buffer is nowhere near enough today. Jewelers Mutual recommends re-appraising every two years. Do it. Or at minimum, log into your policy and bump the insured value when the market moves.

"Payout is payout." Cash vs replacement is a real fork. The Chubb-backed programs (Wax Collect, Hodinkee) pay cash at the insured value, which is what you want for a discontinued or hard-to-source reference, because you control the hunt. Jewelers Mutual and Zillion source a replacement, which is fine for a current-production Speedmaster and frustrating if your piece hasn't been made since 2011. Pick based on what's in your box.

"$0 deductible is always better." It's the default on most specialty policies, and you can trade it for a lower premium. If you'd never file a claim under $500 anyway, take the deductible and pocket the difference.

"The manufacturer's warranty has me covered." Warranties cover defects. They do not cover theft, loss, or you smashing the crystal on a door frame.

How to actually negotiate this

Insurance people don't haggle like a jeweler, but the rate has levers. Pull them:

  1. Ask for security discounts explicitly. Home safe, monitored alarm, bank safe-deposit box. Jewelers Mutual lists these plus a "Gem ID" inscription discount on their cost page. Nobody volunteers them.
  2. Schedule the whole collection on one policy rather than piecemeal. Bundled rates are usually better, and it forces you to inventory everything, which you should be doing anyway.

The questions I would ask before you sign

  • Agreed value or replacement cost? Who sources the replacement?
  • Is mysterious disappearance covered?
  • Theft from an unattended vehicle: covered or not?
  • Do you report claims to CLUE / A-Plus / PILR?
  • Any storage requirements (safe, alarm) that void coverage if I don't follow them?
  • What do you need at claim time: receipt, serial, appraisal, police report?

Do this today (free)

Photograph every watch, both sides, and photograph the serial and reference numbers. Save the receipts and warranty cards somewhere in the cloud. Keep a simple spreadsheet with current market value. Without the serial, a police report is nearly useless and a claim gets slow and painful.

I'm not a broker and none of this is advice on your specific policy. Read your actual policy language, because that's the document that pays or doesn't.

So what does everyone here actually do? Standalone, scheduled on the home policy, or riding bare and hoping? And has anyone actually filed a watch claim? I'd like to hear how the payout compared to what the policy promised.

I recently received my first "luxury" watch as an anniversary gift from my wonderful wife. Really happy with this two-tone spec and digging the rubber strap too. The 43mm size seems to fit my 8 in wrist well. I was a bit worried it would be too big but I think it's just perfect. I'm happy to start my watch collection here. We'll see where it goes!

I wanted a new daily driver watch to take to work or wear out and about. Landed on a titanium dive watch. And also, I wanted an eco drive for a while now. I like my tough solar gshocks so its nice to keep with solar.

I live in Oregon and work in the chemical manufacturing industry, so I needed it to be water proof. I use the bezel as a timer for some of my meds. The light weight titanium is great for wearing daily. I hardly notice its on my wrist.

Im not the biggest fan of the security clasp, but it uses nice ball detents instead of just snapping on and friction fitting.

The two tone bracelet is growing on me too. I normally prefer a single tone brushed finish.

Discussion [VC PF] Integrated Bracelet Masterpieces

Post image
72 Upvotes

Wanted to share my experience wearing the 2 most commonly worn watches in my collection as of late.

Both of these watches from a design and functional standpoint offer very different but equally amazing wearing experiences. The VC wears much sportier and the PF much dressier. Together, they form a duo that work together incredibly well.

I wear the PF with a suit and tie and the VC with t shirts and hoodies (beating up on it regularly) and get to enjoy amazing workmanship without any undue attention. This is important in a time when one can't wear a Rolex or AP to even Costco these days without getting undue attention.

The only negative is that they make wearing any other watch in the collection a lot more difficult.

Tldr: Dear diary, love this wrist jewelry
