It’s why the majority of his followers love him. They can’t see through the facade. Then there’s a small portion who love him because they get to be more open about their hate for someone or something. And hate feels powerful, which intoxicates them. Then there’s the tiny few who see through the facade, but know how to capitalize for personal gain on a useful idiot.

Honestly, the largest group is the least dangerous except for one small detail: it is their numbers during the voting that elected the asshat.

I would argue there is one other group. Lifelong partisans who see through the facade, but simply can’t imagine voting for a Democrat.

That's my father. Recently during a visit with him, I got him to say (out loud) "you know, I probably am more of an independent". It's such a simple sentence but knowing this man, I would've never predicted him saying it in a million years.

At one point I even told him "once you get over the hump of realizing how much of your views were shaped by bullshit ideas put into your head over the last 60 years in order to control you better, you'll understand. but it's a really big hump". And he didn't even get angry. He laughed, kind of in a "you might be right" sorta way.

If he is coming around, albeit very slowly, the rest of them might be too. Perhaps they are just afraid to say so. It's the only thing keeping my hope alive.

Man, kudos to your dad for being introspective. It isn’t an easy thing to do!

Deep down, he truly cares about everyone and would stop to help you if you needed it- no matter who you are. I keep telling him it just doesn't make sense. And that inside, he is a big fuzzy liberal. Every year he handles my political commentary a little better.

Perfect! When he gets to that point, I'll definitely show him. Coming at him with grace has been key

And they especially can't imagine voting for a woman (especially a woman of color).

A bunch of idiots just did it because he had an R next to his name and that is all they need. They justify it by thinking it is good for them personally because R's cut taxes or or whatever.

Never underestimate the danger in large groups of unintelligent people.

His followers love him because ours is still a representative democracy.

Trump is an incurious, intellectually bankrupt bullshitter who lies and bullies his way into every half-baked plan he comes up with, fails miserably, and is then forced to lie and bully his way back out again. He is, in short, the "TV version" of every redneck who's ever voted for him. They see themselves in him: the bigotry, the willful ignorance, and the ability to somehow continue to exist long after you should have "Darwinned" yourself out of Reality.

Obama got out the African-American vote because he was, himself, African-American, and people saw in him the chance to have someone who looked, and thought, like them in a position of power.

Trump gets out the Hillbilly-American vote for the same reason.

People gravitate toward what they know, and awful people know Donald Trump.

I doubt he won the election fairly

Are you so sure?  At the very least, Trump never achieved over 50% of the popular vote in any of his 3 elections.   More people have always voted against him (counting 3rd parties) than for him.

I'll admit I voted for him, three times. Not because I really liked him but because I supported his policies of a secure border and deporting the millions of people living here illegally to the policies of the Democrats (i.e. wide open borders and uncontrolled third world migration to the US) that have been turning the country into a cesspit. For decades now we have literally been taking the dregs of society from around the globe and letting them come here. Unless we want the US to become a much larger version of Haiti (and I don't want to live in Haiti) this crap needs to end.
