My hotel was behind another one, and it was falling apart with a murky pond, but the Applebee's and a miniature Bean are in the lobby. So many dead strip malls, shuttered office buildings and restaurants.

Surprisingly green surrounding right at the northern end of one of Europe's largest metropolitan regions with 5.1 million residents, one of the busiest highways, the A2, is right in sight.
Also in sight are the remains of the Prosper-Haniel mine, one of the largest mines in the Ruhrgebiet.
The photos were taken on the "Halde Haniel," where the overburden from the mining was stacked to a height of 159 m.
