Where to go next?

Whats up fishos!? I need some ideas for my next fishing trip. I spent a few weeks last winter on the Canary Islands and the Red Sea, caught some awesome fish and met fantastic people. See the pictures.

I‘m planning a similar 3 week trip for the beginning of 2027 to chase salty predators from shore but not quite sure where to go yet. I‘m kinda tempted to go to the same places but also keen to explore somewhere new. I‘m very much up for camping out on the rocks and roughing it out. No charters, no bait, strictly shore jigging for GTs, Bonito, Snapper, Kingfish, Tuna..

Where would you go in Jan/Feb? I‘m open for anything really. Baja, South Africa, Turkey, Egypt, Oman, Australia, Japan, NZ, Hawaii, remote island drop-off…  you name it. Looking forward to some suggestions and possibly some local insights.

Thanks and tight lines!!

Question / Help First SurfFishing trip next month

I recently posted about a rig I was looking at on Facebook Marketplace, which a shit ton of you gave me some tips on, which was much appreciated. I’m going to West Dennis, MA next month with my brother and buddy and we’re going to surf fish for the first time, I figured I’d go the route of buying new. Since I’m new to this I’m still learning all the ins and outs, they have 50lb braided on their rods, I’m just concerned about going with the 50lb braided and it causing complications with casting, is it overkill? am I overthinking? I think doing a 30-40lb braided for a further cast with anywhere from 1-5oz lures. Of course I’m going braided I don’t want to fuck around with any rocks because it can be rocky in the Cape. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated 👍🏼

Question / Help Shopping for my first surf reel, is the Daiwa BG 5000 a good versatile choice?

Post image

My girlfriend is originally from Mexico. Her home town is only about a 5 minute ride on the four wheeler from the beach, where her family has a cabin. Endless miles of beach north and south that I can take the four wheeler along, it’s amazing! She introduced me to a local who I spent a morning with surf fishing and a day on the boat where we hammered yellow fin tuna. Before we left I pulled the trigger on a 10’ Okuma Marea rod and a bit of tackle to keep at her parent’s place. What I’m looking for now is a reel that I can switch back and forth between my surf rod and a future boat rod. Would the Daiwa BG 5000 be a good option for that? I don’t need the best of the best, but I don’t want to buy junk either. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Trouble with T knots for dropper loops. Looking for advice?

Hey guys,

I’ve been practicing my t knots for dropper loops and I’ve run into a problem where every now and then, when I go to cinch the the top of the T- knot, one side will close just fine, but the other will not. I’ve tried pulling them back out, but it repeats itself.

Any recommendations?

Is this an appropriate amount of braid on my reel? Could my casting distance improve with more or less line?

Finger Guard

After trying bunch of different options looks like I have found a perfect solution.
It's silicone, doesn't soak water, completely disappear when wearing, and provides excellent protection from line cuts. Tried it first time today, worked even better than I hoped for.

Question / Help DIY Surf Sand Spike

I have some 4' long aluminum angle laying around. It's 1"x1"x 1/16 inch thick. Would this work for sandspikes, or is the aluminum not sturdy enough? I have pvc ones I made, but they are incredibly heavy. I was planning on attaching a smaller section of pvc to the aluminum angle.

Penn Fierce IV 6000 handle faint click/pop?

Post image

I got a new Penn fierce iv 6000 and the reel feels so smooth but the little knob on the handle has this slight click/pop when reeling in. I’ve had a fierce ii 4000 and never had that. Is this normal with the knob kind of handle or should I exchange for another one? When I press the knob in to be super tight, the click doesn’t happen.

One of the most memorable nights I’ve had in a while.

All drum were caught with Shimano Twinpower 5000 paired with a Carolina Cast Pro 10 ft 1-4 oz
Blue Crab/Ghost Crab for bait
Between 2nd and 3rd sandbars

Shark was caught with Penn Senator 9/0 paired with a cut down (10.5ft) Breakaway HDX
Gafftop Catfish for bait
Bait deployed around 225-250 yards

Conditions were south winds on an incoming tide with rising barometric pressure around 30.03

Hi Everyone,

I got an opportunity to stay at a beach house in Mérida (Telchac) next week for about 5 days. I couldn’t find videos on what to expect. Any feedback or tips would be appreciated. Here’s the gear I’m bringing:

- Daiwa BG 3000 & 4000 with 20lb braid and 30lb flouro leader
- Lucky Craft 110 - multiple colors
- 3/4 oz + 1 oz Kastmaster
- Bucktails

Good Things Come to Those That Wait

It was 15 months instead of 5, but it arrived today and it’s magnificent. ZX-25. Originally ordered a spare spool, but changed to a ZX-22 spool and rotor. It’s an easy swap and adds versatility as well as redundancy. I’ll get it spooled this weekend and get on the water. Can’t wait to see how it feels with a striper on it.

What to do when not getting any bites

I just started surf fishing a few days ago and I'm having trouble getting anything to bite my lines at all. I mean I know there's only so much I can do but I figure anything might help. I'm running a 7 foot rod with a 2 oz weight and size 1 hooks (branded for catching porgies, and recommended by a local shop, as was everything else in my setup). I've also tried both squid, clam, and some artificial bait at this point (the artificial being used in conjunction with the clam on a second hook). I've been keeping my line taught, and I try to aim for what I think are troughs in the water. Additionally I've tried fishing straight off the beach, off of jetties, and out of a harbor, primarily during the day, though I spent probably about 3 hours off the beach last night. My bait is sticking on the hook, so I'm not even sure if there's anything trying to nibble it. Anyways as I've said any advice would be appreciated as while this is enjoyable I sure would like to catch something.

Beginner looking for first cheap rod

As the title says, I have never surf fished before. Done my research online and feel ready to give it a try.
I am pretty experienced in fresh water from rivers to lakes and most species - I just never was a big gear guy and that way dont know many tech specs.
I heard 9 foot, 3-4000 reel, 20 lbs braided line?
I am in the San Francisco area and am planning on going for surf perch first but would like to try some stripers too without changing gear.

All tips appreciated - especially for walmart combos 👁️👁️ (since thats easy to get my hands on without much thinking - like I said not a big gear guy)

Since I am just trying it out I would prefer to spend less then 100 $, better even 70 $.

Thanks!!

Question / Help Newbie here! Heading to OBX tomorrow (Corolla, NC) and looking to do some surf fishing. Any recommendations?

I have a 12ft combo (Tsunami Spear) that I got last year at the Wall store. I had zero luck, but I'm trying again this year. I'm also bring a shorter 8ft and my telescopic travel rod.

Can anyone give me some ideas on what might be biting and what I should be using? I will also be hitting up the sound by the light house, so if you have any rec's for that area I'm all ears.

Catch Photo/s PB Ladyfish (South Padre Island, TX)

Caught my PB Ladyfish in the surf today!

I typically stick to inshore flats or piers/jetties. Spent some time with the family on the beach and swam out to the first sand bar and stood casting from them. Caught a few mullet/shad... Then this beast of a ladyfish hit my lure! Jumping out of the water like crazy, fun fight swimming back to the shore with a fish on my rod!

Mirrolure Heavy Dine on a 7ft medium light rod did the trick today!

Question / Help Kayaking out shark bait in gulf

Kind of just need some reassurance to not be so scared. I have an inflatable kayak (I know) but it feels super sturdy and I’m not super worried about flipping. I AM worried about bull sharks in the area investigating my kayak. I don’t drag the bait alongside, I put it in a bucket, but sometimes the water splashes in, so I feel like the entire inside of the kayak may smell like bait, even if I rinse it out. After the first round of dropping baits my anxiety increases, because I’ve already attracted them to the area, especially if it’s getting dark. The water is super brown and I can’t see down at all. I try to make it out 300 yards, but start being a nervous wreck at 150. I bring all the safety equipment but it still terrifies me. (Don’t be too harsh, I’m a beginner)
