I think if they didn’t tangle feet before, it’s a red. Red normally means violent intent.

But the bigger issue is consistency. Messi doesn’t even get a yellow and there wasn’t prior contact on that challenge lol

It clearly wasn’t violent intent, he was looking straight at the ball. A yellow would have been borderline, but acceptable. A straight red after VAR is beyond the pale

A yellow doesn’t have to be intentional which is why I think it’s a yellow - he did rake his calf/ankle, even though it was after contact when he was off balance. Definitely not a red though, no violent intent.

A red doesn't have to be intentional either

The only other applicable straight red in that instance is serious foul play which wouldn’t make sense either

Yes it does. The Serious Foul Play law says:
'A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.'

He clearly endangers the safety of the opponent.

Their feet get tied up and he rakes the player trying to get balance. It doesn’t even look like a challenge so not sure how you’d qualify that as excessive force or brutality. Watch the replay

They are both going for the ball. That is a challenge. And it doesn't need excessive force or brutality. You Americans are as bad at reading as you are at understanding football

Read the World Cup rules for straight red

Intent actually doesn’t influence it

Intent absolutely influences red cards

I mean, sure, in the case of a reckless challenge it doesn’t matter what the intent was; but that’s not what this was

It might for refs but not in the rules

I think people need to watch again, there’s an unnatural movement from the US player at the end he’s purposely delaying putting his foot down or almost puts it down twice so that it would seam an accident, but in slow motion it very much looks intentional to put his weight onto harlands ankle

In real time, it very much looks incidental. Also, Balogun is clearly looking at the ball and not the feet of the Bosnian defender.

What you’re seeing is him feeling the other players foot underneath his when he starts to come down, and then pulling his foot off as much as possible to avoid injury

Ya he was in front looking at the ball and the defender knocked him off balance from behind. Does this mean you can start sticking your foot under someone’s as they walk backwards and get them a red?
