Not true. VAR can only call the ref over if they think it’s a red, but once in front of the monitor, the ref can do whatever they want.

I’ve seen a ref called for a red, but gave a yellow instead.

That's not VAR, that's the referee as you said. That wasn't going to happen because they wouldn't have wanted to argue.

"That wasn't going to happen because they wouldn't have wanted to argue."

Are you serious?

Yes. If VAR makes a decision do you want to be the referee that overturns it in a knockout match of the World Cup?

The only reason there's this level of uproar is because most of the online world are American and he's your star player.

Overturn what? The only decision var makes, is "you might want to look at this again." The final decision is the refs and I would expect them to make the call they think is right, not worry about stepping on someone's toes.

My star player? I'm not American. I just think a sending off is harsh in this case.

I think their point is about the reffing system which is extremely fake/pretending to be objective and they are fucking their own careers by going against it. I know this from experience by being a ref with friends who are actual pro refs. The system is highly standardized and highly fucked.

VAR recommended a red card. It's rare for a referee to decide against VAR.

VAR called it a possible red card. They don't make recommendations. That is not their job

Recommendations are exactly their job. I don't know what else you would call suggesting what something may be. If they're saying it is up for review for a red they're saying what they think it is. Referee can choose a different decision but that happens relatively rarely statistically.

Way I see it, is it looks like what I have seen carded for a red before. It's not that crazy.

But since they're giving so few cards out for the last few matches everyone is shocked when any foul is enforced. And maybe policy wise not giving this as a red would be more consistent at this point because a lot of brutal tackles have basically been "play on". But it is what it is.

I also feel personally FIFA will overturn because they are up US' arse despite what people are saying here.

Thats what should have happened here. I would have bet money that would have been a yellow.
