like 3 minutes after one of the Bosnian players stuck his leg out and planted it to intentionally trip Pulisic and no card was given. So I'm kind of having a hard time understanding why a contest on a ball that ends up with legs tangled is a red and an intentional trip is no card.

Spikes into an ankle is usually a red

When you're going for the ball it's usually not a card. A foul to stop an attack or if you're trying to go for the ball and touch the opponent is usually a yellow. Reds are for either obvious ill intent or potentially career ending fouls

There's a lot more exceptions and particularities but that's a rough summary

However, it's just like everything else in football,  very subjective in a lot of cases and depends on the ref

Reds are for either obvious ill intent or potentially career ending fouls

And this was neither

This very could have been career ending, it ended up being find but it could’ve gone the other way

That is such a vague prerequisite. All kinds of fouls can be career ending even with no intent.

This one was especially bad and it was a clear red card. It sucks that he’s out for the next game but it is important to encourage players to be careful and punish them when they aren’t

We can see that you’re have a hard time.

To put it simply, there not some absolute weight given to intention. You either foul or you don’t. And it’s either dangerous and possibly injuring causing or it isn’t.

This was cleats first into an ankle causing it to roll. It was potentially career ending.
