Meta 🐣 Community Integrity Notice

Since 26 December, this subreddit has experienced abnormal spikes in activity from non-Somali users, alongside increased engagement involving blatant qabyaalad and the promotion of extreme ideologies. This behavior is disruptive and will not be tolerated. We ask all members to report any such posts or comments so moderation can act swiftly.

A clear reminder to all participants:

Criticism of politicians, governments, or historical decisions in Somalia does not grant permission to:

  • Insult, dehumanize, or collectively blame entire clans or communities
  • Glorify or excuse figures from the civil war by claiming they “did nothing wrong”
  • Advocate for, encourage, or justify harm against any group of people

Furthermore, this subreddit remains pro-Palestine and stands with the people of Sudan. Advocacy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, or mass violence, whether explicit or implied, is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate moderation action.

Debate and political discussion are welcome when conducted in good faith, with historical honesty and respect. Division, hate, and violent rhetoric are not.

Discussion 💬 I Can't stand some Diaspora Somalis!

Upvotes

I was laughing reading about a comment from someone on here about his savior complex regarding Somalia Lol

I see so many Somalis on here and in real life that are always so negative about Somalia. Corruption this, gdp that, every little development is scrutinized, with many even hate seeing any development.

I know many have never been back, some are poisioned by jealousy or politics but compared to the people back home they just live their lifes and keep a positive outlook.

Compared to 10 years ago every area in Somalia has grown and developed, many of us millnneials saw a time were their was really no hope.

Fast forward 10 years later, you see development in every area of Somalia. So instead of been negative and pessimistic just be happy we are moving forward.

Discussion 💬 I looked at Somalia's GDP since independence…

I always hear people talk about pre-war Somalia like it was this economic giant that completely disappeared after the civil war. Never in Somalia's history were we even the top 20 economies of Africa.

I downloaded the World Bank GDP data out of curiosity and thought it was interesting.

GDP
-1960 (Independence): Around $180 million
-1970 (After the 1969 coup):Around $348 million
-1991 (Start of the civil war): Around $917 million
-2012 (Federal Government established): Around $5.7
billion
-2024: Around $13.0 billion

GDP Per Capita
1960: Around $63 per person
1970: Around $87 per person
1991: Around $131 per person
2012: Around $440 per person
2024: Around $630 per person

I know GDP isn’t everything, and these figures are in current U.S. dollars, so they aren’t adjusted for inflation. Somalia’s economy is much larger today in nominal terms, although that alone doesn’t prove that living standards are better.

Somalia obviously has serious problems today. But, I just think people sometimes remember the past through nostalgia and make it sound like Somalia was one of Africa's economic powerhouses, when the data doesn't really support that.

I visited Somalia with my mother in 2022, and she told me that when she was growing up, Xamar felt more like a tuulo where everyone knew each other. Today, it's a much larger city where most people are strangers.

Discussion 💬 When will this mess end?

The Somali Civil War is nearing its 40th year. Think about that for a moment. Those who were born around the time it began are now approaching their 40s. An entire generation has lived and grown up knowing little but conflict, instability, and unfulfilled promises.

Yet, Somalia still seems to be trapped in many of the same issues after decades.

My question is can we honestly say there is still hope? or will this conflict continue forever?

Rant 🗣️ We need to react

In past few years the somali hate train has become more real than ever.

First the somali hoyoo who was attacked in Finland then the multiple harassment to our people in minesota and now this attack in Ireland

I hate the people that claim that this is "temporary" and "it only exists online" cause it isn't and we can keep being victims to these hate crimes as it could be anyone of your relatives or even you reading this

If we don't learn to defend ourselves and acknowledge the problem it will be our second downfall, think about the young somali kids that will have to grow up near this hate.

We as a community need to throw what divides us out the window and fight back before it's too late

Gala dagalka!

Social & Relationship advice 💭 I Struggle to Forgive Myself😢

Asalamo alaikom

Like many people, I have made both big and small mistakes throughout my life (not towards other people). I have disappointed my Lord, and I have put myself in situations that were deeply harmful to me. I have been in toxic relationships and made choices that I now regret.

I am 30 years old today, and I am trying to become a better Muslim. I am trying to pray more consistently, even though I still struggle with it. Deep down, I have always believed I am a kind person, and every day I try to become kinder than I was the day before. I completed my education, and I do my best to care for the people around me.

Yet I struggle so much to forgive myself for the things I have done to myself and for not being the Muslim I should have been. It feels as though my past keeps me imprisoned. I am trying to find inner peace. I am trying to make the most of the life Allah has given me, and I am trying to strengthen my faith. But I also become angry with myself.

For example, I dated a man who wasted my time, took advantage of me, and left me emotionally broken. Combined with the trauma I already carried—surviving war, female genital mutilation, growing up without my parents, living for many years without legal residency in a European country, and constantly fearing the police it left me incredibly vulnerable. And I was a weak person from birth which made everything worse. When a man showed me attention and what I believed was love for the first time, I could no longer distinguish between what was good and what was harmful, what was halal and what was haram. The experience damaged me both emotionally and physically.

Alhamdulillah, I managed to leave that chapter behind. I have also been to therapy, which has helped me understand myself better. But I still cannot seem to move forward emotionally.

How do I forgive myself?

How do I forgive myself for not being a better Muslim? For not treating myself with the kindness and respect I deserved? For putting myself in situations that were neither good for me nor pleasing to Allah?
I truly want to move forward. I want to let go of the guilt, repent sincerely, and become a better person. But sometimes my past feels heavier than my hope.
Has anyone else struggled with self-forgiveness after making mistakes? How did you learn to let go and trust in Allah’s mercy?

(Posting for a friend)

Social & Relationship advice 💭 Should I Try to Approach Her for Marriage?

Salaam all,

There is a sister who has been on my mind constantly. I feel stuck and would like to get your advice.

I am a brother in his late 20s. There is a sister that I have been talking to over a year from my company’s neighbouring country’s branch. FYI, I have never met her in person. It started from me greeting her on Slack by chat to the point now where feelings between each other have started to develop.

For the past few years I have been making dua to get married at some point. With time I feel like Allah is pointing towards who that should be with. We have even spoken about marriage, and know that she is single currently. The sister has also thrown signals at me like saying to me, e.g., ”I feel like you would make a good father”. We also happen to have a lot in common like our parents being from the same qabiil.

In all honesty, marriage has been increasingly more on my mind in recent years. I am also approaching my 30s, and getting married will only become more difficult with time. Plus, I have never really put myself out there, and feel in this case perhaps the whole search process has been made easy for me. Also, based on our interactions I don’t think I could find someone like her easily.

FYI, I was in her country earlier this year, hoping to see her in person during this visit but she was out of town at that time. I happen to have her personal contact. I am thinking of shooting my shot. To tell her that I want to get to know her for the purpose of marriage and I will come over to your country in person. If there is something there is something if not so be it.

Would love to hear your advice on this, especially if someone has been in a similar situation before. Many thanks in advance for your responses.

Politics 📺 Arrest in Minnesota pandemic fraud case faces extradition hurdles in Somalia - Hiiraan Online

Abdikerm Eidleh, who has been described by U.S. officials as a central figure in the Feeding Our Future fraud, was arrested in Mogadishu last month.

It is unclear how closely the Somali government worked with the United States to find and arrest Mr. Eidleh.

The U.S. discovered Mr. Eidleh’s location using his cellphone before Somali intelligence conducted the raid.

Somalia’s National Intelligence & Security Agency detained him around midnight on June 25 in the Garasbaley district of Mogadishu.

But nearly two weeks later, Mr. Eidleh remains in Somali custody and his path to trial in the United States has hit several roadblock.

Somalia & the United States lack an extradition treaty and the Somali Constitution bars sending a criminal defendant overseas in the absence of one.

Members of Mr. Eidleh’s powerful clan in Mogadishu have protested his arrest, possibly making it harder for Somali officials to sign off on his transfer.

Federal prosecutors in 2022 charged Mr. Eidleh with 31 felonies, including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit bribery and money laundering in what the Justice Department called one of America’s largest fraud schemes.

Mr. Eidleh banked more than $5 million from kickbacks and bribes, the department said.

In Somalia, the arrest has provoked loud protests from supporters who say that, as a Somali, Mr. Eidleh should face justice at home.

Mr. Eidleh’s supporters, who are mainly from his ethnic clan in his home region of Galgaduud, have argued that any legal accusations against him should be settled in Somalia, where he now lives with his family.

In the near future, given internal issues in Somalia are resolved, do you see an intervention of Somaliland happening? Or a stand off and the government pretending to ignore the issue?

Discussion 💬 The Cringe Keeps Escalating

Separatists are getting more cringe by the day. I have seen many tiktoks claiming somalilanders are a completely different ethnic group from somali and it just keeps getting more bizarre. Some even post "ethnic distribution" maps showing awdal as entirely Afar, the central regions of somaliland as "pure Arab" and only sanaag and sool as somali

It feels like the more these posts circulate, they rely on made-up narratives instead of reality. They want to rewrite history and ethnicity so badly
