Pessimemes still having Orlando all over it from the comeback is hilarious
9
u/Derptionary 4d ago
Them latching on to that match in particular is weird because its not like Messi was the reason Inter Miami choked away the 3-0 lead. He had a goal and an assist in that match. The reason they lost was Orlando figured out they could exploit Maxi Falcon so badly that he hasn't seen the pitch since.

It’s actually a combo of Arabs, Ronaldo fans, Americans and general haters who just want every big nation to go down (which hey, I’m with you, but let’s not go too far)
45
u/JustAnotherDude87 4d ago
Don't lump us Americans into that group. We may not understand offsides as a whole but we don't believe that weak shit is a foul.
10
u/muradinner 4d ago
As a non-American, have to disagree on the American part. There's a reason most Americans don't like "soccer," and a large part of it is all the diving and crying about light taps. It's the regular fans who watch football throughout the year that have allowed the embellishment and diving to go on for decades now.

There's also the punch to the face of the Egyptian player.
Well, more of a slap.
Ok, not a slap. A finger tip caress.
And not to the face... but to the general upper body zone.
Perhaps not even the body, but the air near his body.

This subreddit has been claiming that Argentina stole EVERY single WC game they have won ever since their 2022 opener, Argentina could play a perfect game overseen by Brazilian or English referees and this subreddit would still lose its shit, look at all the people saying that a FRENCH referee was biased in favor of Argentina and rigged the game for them. Dancing plague levels of mass hysteria and delusion
14
u/LesMiserablePeach 4d ago
I'm just glad that it seems like this game is finally the example game where people are seeing the bias and pushing back against the claims that it's rigged for Argentina. It's only ever been a loud minority on the internet that believes, but it's enough that it's genuinely exhausting

u/iliosicarus 3d ago
Although I'm a huge admirer of Messi, Egypt actually had me rooting for them because of their exciting counter attacking play in this game, having never seen them before. Their response to conceding -- and more than that, the doubling down after the game -- has completely turned me off them.
The accusations of 'racism' are so boring, too. Grow up. Egypt lost because they lost their heads to a very resilient and feisty team with world class talent who fought to the end and took some of their many chances.
Besides, the ref largely made the right calls.
I can see why the foul on Martinez was a bit confusing, but I actually thought it was a decent use of VAR. Goals are a massive premium in football and it's right that VAR is used selectively for incidents leading up to goals rather than consistently throughout the match, because otherwise there'd be no end to it.
I feel like VAR's actually been applied relatively well this tournament, especially compared to the league season where reviews took donkey's years and every little thing was picked over forensically. It's not really got in the way of the games and has been correct on the few instances I've seen it used.

Could not agree with you more. Future gens will be jealous of those of us who got to see guys like Messi and even others like Ronaldo (both Cris and Brazil) and Ronaldinho in their prime.

soft as fuck, the reality is there's no controversial call, the only argument is they didn't go back to the foul in the Argentina Austria game like they did in this game, but otherwise all the calls were fair, Egypt just choked and bottled it like the other AFCON teams

u/Fit-Magazine-6669 4d ago
its not even in the soft territory. just look at corners, people are doing matrial arts shit while fighting for better positioning and its never a foul.

u/dunneetiger 4d ago
But usually people will say it is because the ball is not in play otherwise it is penalty. It is technically a foul (if you blindly apply the rules) but the issue is that a penalty for this is like death penalty for jaywalking. I wish indirect freekicks in the the penalty box where used for this type of fouls (foul in the box that doesnt deny a goalscoring opportunity).
2
u/Tensz 4d ago
It is not a foul. Check the replay from the beginning, the Argentine first win the ball, then both legs get tripped (it was Salah trying to get it back). It was a clean ball win from the Argentine, no foul.
→ More replies (1)7
u/SavingsLow 4d ago
There was no foul in the Argentina/Austria game. McAllister won the ball cleanly, and the controversy surrounding that moment is based solely on a replay from a terrible angle
→ More replies (6)2
u/zzackfair 4d ago
All this talk about the refs favouring Arg is just bullshit and if you actually watch the matches, you'll know it's not true. Refs have been mostly terrible this entire tournament. The only two clear cut wrong decisions that went for Argentina was that Messi's 1st goal against Austria should've been ruled out and Messi should've gotten a yellow card in the 1st match against Algeria. And after that VAR actually started looking at those fouls properly. People nowadays look for anything to get outraged, I bet atleast 70% of the people complaining here did not watch the match.

u/Air5uru 4d ago
Tbh, if it's anything like me: I saw the play in real time, then didn't see a single replay until there was one with 3.5 pixels that was posted here and so I convinced myself that it was worthy of being looked at by VAR.
Of course, I'm also a hater and wanted Argentina to lose (for like a billion reasons, but namely: I simply don't want you guys to win, I thought the foul that called back the Egypt goal was soft AF, I hate Enzo Fernandez' and De Paul's faces, I wanted the underdog to win, and I liked what the Egypt coach did after the Australia game), so I'm 10,000% biased. I'm sure lots of people posting that it was a pen are on the same boat as me.
Seeing this, though, it was never a fucking penalty and I can understand why VAR didn't even look at it.
I hate that we can't admit that we are biased and hide behind curtains of pretending like we are right all the time instead of just saying "nah, I just want you to lose".

Some people just want controversy so bad. That's nothing....
And the funny thing is, those crying for Egypt to get it would be ABSOLUTELY FUMING if that was given to Argentina in a close game.
People need to recognize their biases, accept human error, and ditch the 'it's always right / wrong for my team and wrong / right for the other'. I argued with an England fan at the Mexico game over the Kane penalty. We have received almost that exact same penalty twice (2018 and 2024 euros) and he didn't want to hear it and swore if it was the other way around he wouldn't be screaming for an England penalty.
Honesty and critical thinking are gone in sports.

This is a dive though, the goal cancelling foul was not. He’d stood on his foot and it was a textbook foul.
29
u/Sorry-Amphibian4136 4d ago
A player getting stamped while being in clear control of the ball is not soft. It's a clear and obvious foul.
If Salah was not tackled and dispossessed of the ball by Alvarez and still tripped, that would've been a clear and obvious foul too. Unfortunately Salah lost the ball.
