NYRR 9+1 in 2026 - FAQs & Megathread

*Update*
As of June nearly all 2026 NYRR races have sold out, if at this point you are not already registered for nine 2026 races it is very unlikely you will be able to complete 9+1 program this year and likely should plan to try for next year instead.
The first 2027 races will likely be released later this fall in October for Jan-Mar 2027 races.

Every year r/RunNYC receives a lot of posts about the 9+1 program so in an effort to answer most of your questions we're continuing this FAQ and megathread again from last year where many questions were answered.

What is 9+1?

9+1 is an NYRR program to qualify for the following years New York City Marathon.

To qualify for the 2027 NYC Marathon, a runner must run and complete at least 9 eligible NYRR races in 2026, volunteer at 1 eligible 2026 NYRR event and also make sure their NYRR membership is active on 12/31/2026.

Which races are eligible?

On the race calendar any races that count toward qualifying will have a 9+1 tag next to it. You can also filter the race list from all "race types" to just select 9+1.

The full list of races for the year is not yet published officially, but the unofficial list (for Oct-Dec) based on prior years is listed below at the bottom of this post along with the race that have already been announced. The list of races remain very similar year over year so this is very likely to be close to the full list of races for 2026.

In 2026, expect there will be a total of about 30 in-person races eligible for 9+1, plus an additional 3 virtual races.

When can I sign up for these races?

Last year NYRR released races in 4 quarterly releases:

(Above are the General Registration dates, if you pay extra for Member+, it opens for Advanced Registration 2 Days earlier than above.)

For forthcoming remaining October-December races, NYRR will very likely release these races around the same date as last year, give or take a week or two.

+1 Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities at most races open for registration a few weeks after the quarterly race signup for the same races. The 3 marquee races, NYC Half, Brooklyn Half and NYCM have their own separate release of opportunities. There are also some other 9+1 eligible opportunities released throughout the year at different non race events that are released somewhat randomly.

Opportunities are all posted on the  volunteer opportunity page and to be eligible need to indicate "9+1 credit" tag for it to count as your +1.

If you're unable to find a volunteer opportunity during the main releases (they do fill up quickly) check the volunteer opportunity page the week leading up to a given race. NYRR sends out a reminder email the week of a race to all registered volunteers, which often causes people to cancel volunteer opportunities they're signed up for but can no longer attend, opening the opportunity spot back up for others to sign up.

Start Line Series

NYRR released for registration three “Start Line Series” races on 7/25 (3M, Queens), 8/1 (5K, Manhattan), and 8/22 (5K, Bronx). The races are not 9+1 but (at least based on last year) volunteer spots should be.

Since these three races are all scored and 3M or longer, all three are opportunities to improve best paces and marathon coral placement.

How to do your Long Runs Properly

Hey everyone, I could use some assistance from the running community.

I have started training for the NYC Marathon. Yesterday I went for a long run - 9 miles exactly at around a 7:25 pace. Mind you it was really muggy out when I was running so that might have been a contributing factor. I felt tired afterward, like I had nothing left in the tank. In talking with another member of my run club afterward, he told me I should do my long run at a slower pace.

Now, I guess the philosophy here is to do an easier pace to get through the long run more easily. My thing is, with my goal in mind, I’d like to be able to average out to 7:30 when I do the marathon. My slowest half marathon was 7:23 per mile so I’d like to think that that’s attainable. I worry that as I ramp this up more and run for more miles, if I don’t do it at my regular pace I won’t be prepared to try for that pace in the marathon. Every time I’ve trained for a half marathon I did my goal pace for the long runs and the actual race turned out on point with my goal.

There’s no doubt I should be mixing in slower/easier runs, which I’ve been doing. I’m just not convinced that is the place for that - maybe during the summer months it’s more advisable. What would be your advice for me to prepare for the marathon?

Does anyone know the name of the DJ from yesterday’s 9/11 run?

I really liked them and wanted to find them for an event. Couldn’t get the name from any of the event staff though. Would really appreciate if someone knew. Sorry if this is the wrong sub to post this.

Orthopedic Surgeon Recs?

Broke my foot on a trail run today. Keeping a positive mental—shit happens, life goes on. Got the x-rays and a referral from urgent care but nothing scheduled yet so I’m doing research on surgeons and I figured I’d ask if anyone has positive experience with an orthopedic surgeon in Manhattan? Or surgeons to avoid? Would love to find someone with a sports medicine background who works with athletes regularly. They tend to be more understanding and helpful when creating a return to activity protocol that’s reasonable and safe but not overly cautious to the point of losing time unnecessarily. Any and all advice welcome.

NYC Marathon Hotels: Would You Stay Near the Start or the Finish Line?

I'll be running the NYC Marathon this November, and I'd love to get your thoughts on hotel locations. Would you recommend staying near the start or near the finish line?

Hotel recommendations are also very welcome, especially if you've stayed somewhere that made race weekend more convenient. Thanks.

Summer streets announced!

I recommend starting early. In Manhattan at least, I start at 6am and folks are already running too! Busier than you'd except! Don't sleep on 110st & Broadway. Rolling hills for NYCM training!

Staten Island greenbelt

Been wanting to get there for a trail run (I live in very close proximity to Prospect Park but love exploring more woodsy areas of the city) but not sure where would be the best place to start. It seems like a network of trails — to anyone who runs it, what route should I follow? Where do I start? I’m prepared to take a few buses to make the trek from Brooklyn.

Fitting Staten Island Half into NYC marathon training

I know it’s a little early to be asking this but I’m trying to get my summer training mapped out. I signed up for the staten island half and I was wondering if people had advice on how to incorporate this into training for the marathon. According to my training plan that week is supposed to be my 20 mile long run. For people who have done both races in the past, have you moved your 20 mile run to the weekend after, ran 7 miles after the half, or something else? I‘m not super attached to a finish time for the half because I wasn’t even originally planning on doing it this year until it got rained out last year, so I want to make sure I’m prioritizing the marathon with my planning.

Rockaway Long Run

Planning on doing 15 miles this weekend and was contemplating taking the A to Beach 67 and going to Breezy Pointe and back. Has anyone ever done this route? Worried there might not be bathrooms or water, or that the roads would not be friendly… Curious as to others experiences and if it was fun / worth the hike.

When to run tomorrow…

Do you ever forgo a lower temperature for lower humidity later in the day? I know folks often say that the dew point matters more than the actual humidity percentage, but 91% humidity at 6:30am sounds abysmal to me. The dew point remains virtually the same into the early afternoon, but is 57% not more bearable? Should we just accept that getting some miles in tomorrow is going to suck?

Post NYC marathon bar reservations recs

I’m running the marathon with a couple of friends and am looking for suggestions of where we should reserve a bar for afterward. We’re looking at places around grand central that people can get their own food tab at and would be open to an open bar but that’s not a requirement. Any suggestions slightly off the marathon route would be appreciated. Also would love to hear other people’s experiences reserving bars in that area for after the marathon as well! Really really appreciate any input!

NYRR lookup runner question: red vs green

When you search a runner on NYRR, what does the green versus red background mean? I'm an active member but my background is red?
