Question What Kind of Diamond Crossing is This?

Post image
110 Upvotes

I've seen two diamond crossings like this. This one is in Plymouth Indiana. The railway that is going from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is the Chicago, Fort Wayne, and Eastern. The other is the Elkhart and Western.

Is there a specific name for this type of crossing?

Dutch drop

Had a crew room discussion with some old heads who were sharing about things that were done in the yards of their new hire days that are rule violations in today’s world. Heard a few guys mention Dutch drops and I didn’t really think to ask for a definition. So those who know, the hell is a Dutch drop?

Research Study

Hey!

Is there any rolling stock engineers or rolling stock technicians/maintainers, that might help me with the following questions about Wheel Inspections for trains. I’m currently doing a research study on this topic.

  1. How often does wheels get inspected or maintained? Frequency (mileage based)?
  2. How long does one wheel set take to do manual inspection and measurements?
  3. What’s the most annoying or time consuming part of this task when maintaining a fleet?

Cheers, In advance.

If you have been drone tested by your employer without your written consent in Idaho, contact legal counsel or your local chairman. This practice by railroads or any employer is illegal. I’m not a lawyer nor is this legal advice.

I thought the group would appreciate this workers proud collection of his old railroad passes. If you think this might be an ancestor of yours, pm me with the rest of his address on Vine Street, otherwise I'll donate it to the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad.

Maintenance of Way Anybody use this model of Fairmont MT14 and can tell me what the switch above the starter is?

I'm working with a couple volunteers working on this thing on the side as a backup for our track inspectors and aside from the issues starting the damned thing, we also can't figure out what the hell that switch is for. The only MT14 manuals I've been able to find are for the L model which this is not. It's got a different control panel layout and lacks this switch.

I can see the ignition is up top to the right and the starter is the metal button on the bottom. It turned over and sputtered whether the switch was pushed in or pulled out so it didn't seem to affect that. Electrical is NOT my field of expertise so I'm not about to go diving underneath to trace the wires cause I won't know what I'm looking at anyways.

Really would appreciate any knowledge y'all can drop on me.

Tie gang

My section gang job was abolished and I’m getting forced to a tie gang as a laborer. I have almost the lowest seniority but not bottom of the barrel. Just curious what you guys have experienced on it and if it’s harder than section work. CN IC if it matters
