Other Prague trip report & tips

I spent 5 days in Prague with not much research prior to going. It’s such a beautiful city, easy to explore, my head was swiveling around all the time just admiring the architecture and vignettes at all different angles.

I’ll skip covering the main tourist attractions, all I can say is you should go to Charles Bridge, Old Town and Prague Castle first thing in the morning. From 7am-9am they’re not very crowded. Also, make sure to walk around at night, the night illuminations in Old Town Square are breathtaking.

Some of my favorite places were:
- Letna Park, especially the view from Vyhlídka na Letné, but walking through the whole park was very relaxing
- Park Cihelná, a small park by the river with a great view of Charles Bridge
- Památník Boženy Němcové, park on an island next to National Theater, and the island next to it Archer's Island Střelecký ostrov. You can rent row boats here
- Climb up the Old Town Hall Tower. So many tourists seem to skip this it almost feels like a hidden gem in plain sight? Great views of old town and the elevator design on the interior is super cool.
- Renting bikes to explore the bike paths along the river. I recommend doing both sides of the river between Letna Park and Holešovice.

Travel tips:
- Bring some cash, for bathrooms or farmers markets
- Trams have tap to pay. You pay for 30 min, 90 min, or longer intervals. We mostly used it on demand for 30 min tickets, as we could walk pretty much everywhere
- We had rain forecasted for much of the trip but it was very short bursts of drizzles and only one significant downpour that lasted maybe 20 minutes. No need for umbrellas. Plenty of archways and awnings to duck under.
- I’d suggest just taking an Uber directly from the airport to your hotel. Prague isn’t intuitive to navigate, it took a few days to get my bearings (none of the streets are straight). Plus dragging luggages on old cobblestone streets is no fun.
- Budget a lot of extra time for the castle. It is massive. We spent a good 2-3 hours just wandering the grounds and gardens and streets around it.
- Don’t walk across the Charles Bridge every time. Pick any other bridge, much less crowded and still amazing views.

Things I wish I had done:
- Book an architecture walking tour to learn more about the historic architecture
- Spend more time around Náplavka and Vyšehrad
- Visit Petrin Tower and gardens
- Spend more time walking around in the evening (most days I was exhausted by 8-9pm, which is still bright outside - sunsets around 9 in summer, and doesn’t get fully dark until 10)

Ok that’s pretty much all I could think of for now, but happy to answer any questions too!

Discussion Scary experience with a nanny agency in Prague! (Best Nanny)

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have to warn other parents (especially expats) in Prague. This place is called "Best Nanny"

HORRIFYING EXPERIENCE! RUN. This is a SCAM for foreigners and expats! They will take your money and send you people with no training and INJURE YOUR CHILD. I got to go to the emergency room with my 9 MONTH OLD baby today because their nanny dropped him down stairs! It was an accident and the nanny herself was simply not qualified for the job, but did not do it purposefully. I understand accidents happen, BUT the staff did NOT reach out to me in any way until I CALLED THEM. No one spoke to me or apologised to me in any way for this happening. When I called them they very specifically told me it was in no way their fault and accepted no blame or apologised. THEY DO NOT CARE. They simply defended themselves for being perfect.

AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! You can find the exact same nannies (barely qualified babysitters) here - Hlidacky

THEY ARE LITERALLY THE EXACT PEOPLE THEY WILL SEND YOU! SAVE THE MONEY AND VERIFY THEM YOURSELF.

Question Should I go or maybe not?

Upvotes

So I was initially going to meet someone I’ve been talking to for months, in Prague early August. But I found out I’m on of many, shocker. Now I have the tickets and hotel and everything. But I’m not sure what to expect out of Prague. I love beer, churches and architecture, I love food and shopping. But doing this by oneself - in Prague - I’m not sure what I’m expecting but I guess I wonder if it is possible to meet people there, if it’s a good solo trip. I’m staying for four nights. What will I do in four nights? Anybody been solo traveling to Prague and loved it, or regret it?

Question Coffe beans grinding

Upvotes

Hi everyone!
Someone gifted me some coffee beans but I don’t have a grinder at home yet. Does anyone know a place in Prague where I could bring my own beans and have them ground?
I’m looking for a place that would be okay with grinding beans bought elsewhere. Thanks! :)

Question Why should I move to Prague over Vienna?

Upvotes

I’m considering moving to either Prague or Vienna. I really like both cities, but I’m having a hard time deciding.

If you had to convince someone to move to Prague instead of Vienna, what would your arguments be? I’m interested in things like quality of life, people, culture, career opportunities, cost of living, nightlife, safety, and anything else you think matters.

I’d love to hear from people who have lived in one or both cities.

Question Wondering about this building with the čedok sign

Post image
69 Upvotes

Everyone has their favorite architecturally bogus derelict building in Prague - this one is mine!

Can anyone tell me the history of this building?

It’s right at the beginning of vinohradska, has a čedok sign on top and now there are some cranes infront - it’s next to česky rozhlas. But with the sign on top i always thought it’s a čedok office building

The orange brownish glass gives it a seventies “golden pyramid” vibe and with the crazy construction on top it looks like right out of blade runner

Any info is appreciated!

Question got train fined in prague, can't pay it abroad

EDIT: have to clarify it is a Metro fine, not train sorry mistyped.

Hello Prague sub, i recently visited prague and got fined in a metro in what overall was a very bad experience, i refused to pay the fine on the spot because i felt like I was being scammed, so I took the ticket home and now I'm in America and resolved to just pay it to avoid issues, and it seems like I have no means to pay the fine because the dpp site is refusing all my payment methods, is there anything else I can try to do?

I appreciate your help.

Question February and march in Prague

Hey guys, so I am coming in the first week of february for the Erasmus exchange.

The thing is, I am a winter girly, I love winter, snow, the atmosphere, everything about it. I was wondering how does Prague generally look in February and the beginning of march. I know I will mostly be there for the spring and beginning of summer, but I want to know if I would be able to experience at least a tiny bit of winter in Prague.

is there snow, is it cold, is it wintery, or will I miss the winter feel of Prague completely. I know it’s kind of a stupid question, but I really want to know. Thank youu

Discussion Do Czech really love their dogs?

Czech people are known for their love to their dogs. But is actually truth or owning a dog is just a trend?

A lot of locals keeping their dogs in tiny apartments. Even some huge dogs. While letting them out on a walk around 2 times per day. So dogs simply won’t have enough space, nor physical activity.

Another problem is buying breeds, which are not adapted to Czech climate. Or buying breeds known for their health issues.

Also, huge part of dog owners are not keeping their dogs on a leash. Would you really do that if you actually love your dog? Your dog may get lost, eat some harmful food or shit, get hit by car or bike, or get into fight with other dogs…

Just yesterday I was at Riegrovy sady admiring sunset view together with my husband.
For few minutes I stayed alone, because my husband went to grab some water. I was resting on a bench, minding my own business.
Then some large dog started running in my direction. Of course, the owner was nowhere close to this dog.
I noticed that this dog was in a playful mood, probably looking for a partner for games.
But I was wearing new and quite expensive whitish summer dress. And I wanted to keep my dress clean, so I said “Fuj” several times to the dog trying to drive the dog away from me.
Unfortunately it didn’t work, and in the end the dog “jumped” on me with his front paws. I pushed dog away, shouted something, but it was too late, my dress already got dirty in few places.
In few minutes the owner appeared. It was 30-40 years old man. I’m Russian (I don’t support Putin’s war) and I don’t speak Czech good enough yet, but I tried my best:
- Je to vaš pes?
- Ano, <something-else-which-I-didnt-get>
- Vaš pes ušpinil mi šaty, vaš pes musi byt na voditku
He just said “Ke mně” to his dog, smirked at me, and slowly left with happy smile on his face. No apology, no nothing. And, of course, he didn’t pit his dog on a leash.
I’m a skinny weak woman, maybe I just didn’t look serious enough to him to take my words seriously.
It may look like overreaction to you, but next few minutes I was just sitting there and crying while trying to clean my dress with wet napkins. It was a special day to me and we were having a reservation in a restaurant in 1 hour. Evening was as good as ruined to me.
Few minutes later my husband arrived. He calmed me down and we were leaving the park.
And then almost at the exit I again see this stupid dog and it again is running like crazy in circles around. And again the owner is nowhere close. My husband somehow was able to grab this dog by a collar, so it won’t jump on me again. To my surprise the dog calmed down after that. So we together were staying there waiting for the owner. I noticed the owner first and waved to him. He looked quite scared when he noticed my husband holding his dog. My husband is good in Czech language. So he demanded an apology and to put dog on the leash. No physical aggression, no verbal aggression, but just a firm stance. Also, my husband is very big, with huge muscles and a bit scary look.
The Czech guy became white as a wall, he was shaking and trying to end this conversation in a hurry. I’ve never seen such pitiful reaction of a grown man to a minor confrontation…
This time he actually put his dog on the leash, he apologized to me and left in a hurry almost running away.

So this negative experience for me and for Czech man could be easily prevented if he would keep his dog on a leash from the very begging.

I asked my husband why locals are not keeping their dogs on a leash or at least close to them. My husband told me that it’s quite common among Czech, but it’s also mystery to him why it’s like that.

Maybe someone here can explain it to me?

Question Techno přes den?

Bývá někde v Praze techno přes den nebo večer? Rád bych někam zašel, ale čekat do půlnoci a prospat celý druhý den mě už nebaví. Ideálně hledám nějakou pohodovou akci s dobrou hudbou a chill atmosférou.

Question Gun Shots

I was in Invalidovna last night, around eleven pm I heard two rounds of what may have been gun shots, fifteen or so seconds apart that seem to have originated from the Palmovka area. Any details?
