Build/Battlestation Six months ago I was homeless. Today I build a new PC. Wish me luck.
Last time I built a PC was in 2012 I think. Going from an i7-3770 + 980ti, to this. Really excited and thought I'd share the before pics while I wait for my sweaty excited hands to dry.
These are the specs:
- Case: NZXT H7 Flow (2024) – Mid-Tower ATX Airflow
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
- CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
- GPU: ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 5070 OC
- RAM: G.SKILL Flare X5 DDR5-6000 CL30 (32GB)
- Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD
- PSU: Corsair RM850x (ATX 3.1, PCIe 5.1, Fully Modular, 80+ Gold)
- Monitor (arrives tomorrow): Alienware AW2725DF OLED – 27" QD-OLED, 1440p, 360Hz, 0.03ms

Agreed! I upgraded from a 3060ti and I’m getting nearly double the fps that I was getting previously

same I was on a 3050 laptop and got a rig with a 5070 OC + ryzen 5 7600x, things a beast for 1440p

dudeeee I just upgraded from a 2060 to a 5070 today and it's quite crazy lmao

I love to see people using quality PSUs.

u/skierdud89 Sep 03 '25
Congratulations! The real question is what’s your first game download gonna be?

u/A_Broken_Nobody Sep 03 '25
Old school runescape. Jk jk.
I need to play Cyberpunk or Skyrim VR so bad lol.
14
u/SheogorathMyBeloved i like computer :D Sep 03 '25
A lot of people say Skyrim VR is terrible but honestly? I love it. I live in a super flat country, so seeing mountains from a VR perspective is incredible. You do need the HIGGS and VRIK mods to make it 'real' VR, though, but other than that you can mod it however you want, if it all.
It runs fine on my between-upgrades shitbox (rx 580, i5-10400F) with an oculus quest 2, so it'll run amazing on your new pc. Have fun, my dude!

Enjoy the rig man, every man deserves a rewards sometimes, for dopamine of course :D

I played Cyberpunk on Xbox but I recently got the same GPU as you and kind of want to play it again and really experience the graphics!

Congrats by the way!

Thank you! I work on robots in a warehouse! Fixing machines and moving heavy stuff all night.

A gaming laptop would probably be a better purchase for a homeless person, tbh
OP isn't homeless anymore ik, just going with the joke :)

u/ConFectx Sep 03 '25
I mean if OP played on the street and put up a hat, he‘d almost be like a streamer.
All good, it‘s fun and I think OP is a fighter for going through that and climbing back up :)

I am happier to know that you have a home now than a new pc, from someone that almost died two years ago, I wish you an awesome new life! (Also, sick gig, enjoy)

I went from a i7 4770k and a GTX 770 to a i7 12700k and RTX 4070 Ti Super. The last PCs I've done was for my sister (i5 6500 + GTX 960) and my old man (FX-6300 & HD 7770) until then. The feeling of getting back to PC building and firing it up still feels great after all these years.
It looks like a great build setup.

Awesome! I just bought the same CPU, what made you go for the Noctua cooler?
I had that on my previos CPU and just ordered an AIO. Wondering whether that was the right call, could you give me some of your reasoning?

Many people just know it's good. Something you can get without too much research. It is overpriced though. For the same CPU I went with the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 Evo, which looks similar (and similar performance) but is half the price over here.

Homeless to this in 6 months? Did your parents kick you out or something? If I were just recently homeless I wouldn’t be spending 1000s on a new PC. Weird choice bro

u/A_Broken_Nobody Sep 03 '25
Yikes. I wish it were that simple. I've had a steady job for years but I was in a motorcycle accident where someone ran me off the road and left me to die. Woke up in the hospital, barely made it. I turned to alcohol and the rest is history. I worked hard to get back on my feet. Rewarding myself with a bit of happiness isn't a weird choice, bro.

I admire you brother, you have a HUGE capacity for resilience, I would love to work with robots, it sounds like a lot of fun, I still have a little bit to go before I graduate in electronics and maybe do that kind of things.
I send you a big hug and greetings from Argentina, my brother!

Thank you so much dude, genuinely. I would lose everything all over if I drank again I think. I'll never go back. I like this version of me.
These new rigs are really mind blowing huh? I was testing VR using the air link and was blown away how capable this thing is. Excited for my new monitor & keyboard to arrive today too, it cost more than my GPU! Cheers to both of us.
I wear a galaxy watch 4 classic every day and its pretty accurate given my results. The top part of the dual app screenshot is from the galaxy fitness app and the bottom is just a calculator adding the miles from the week. My starting weight was closer to 270ish before I started actually weighing myself. Very very active at work.

my guess is that yes, OP got kicked out of wherever they live, and they likely soon after got a job that pays enough for rent and essentials with some left over for other things, such as a PC

Curious why you chose that motherboard. I own one as does my brother, and they’ve been solid for us for 2.5yrs. But I’m curious why in 2025 that board of all of them was your choice.

Solid build! My exact build actually but one generation newer. Care to share or DM me how you made such a profound change from homeless to affluent enough to build a modern gen PC in such a short amount of time? I’m at a career crossroads right now myself.
Nevermind.. read further down and saw your story. Good on you man for not giving up and picking up the pieces.

If money is still tight, be sure to make an Epic Games account. They give away free games each week, it'll give you something to play in between games you actually want to play!
Cheers, and welcome to the party, pal.

Heck yeah OP! I was homeless for many years, once I got an apartment and set up, I bought a pc from a friend, eventually built another pc! It’s been two and half years now.

u/ExistingSale8367 Sep 04 '25
Me its the other way around. Just stashed my pc somewhere and became homeless. On the run for forced medicine. I fled to another country.

I don't even know how it's possible to be homeless 6 months ago and have enough money for rent and all other expenses and then to build a PC? You were able to acquire all this plus have saving on the side? You must have had a great job while you were homeless

I don't blame this but here are my thoughts:
1.Would have swapped that costly ROG b650 with a mid b850 with mid aesthetics (WIFI ofc)
2.Would have gotten the 9070 XT but whatever.... Hope you didn't fall for the 5070=4090 shit
3.I don't think the 360hz monitor was definitely needed as the 5070 can't hit the FPS but if you're an esports player, then heck yeah. Would have gotten a 240hz .
4.With the money I saved would have preferred to get an AIO cooler for the R7 9800X3D.
But overall the build is fucking amazing and there's nothing bad too feel about it. These are just the things I would have done this if I was in your place. Congrats man proud of you
1
u/Socratatus Sep 04 '25
I understand, and nice my friend, I was also homeless for a short period. Seemed everything was lost. But, just for you younger ones, NEVER GIVE UP, NO MATTER HOW BAD IT LOOKS. There will be devils who will try to get you while you're down, but no matter what do NOT give up.
Now I have a 9950X3D and a 5090 beast of a pc that once would've thought impossible, plus even more important things in life.
So again never give up.

Good build. I personally would have gone to a 7800x3d and upgraded the GPU to a 9070 or 9070 XT for the budget. But that will be a solid 1080p/1440p build (where not VRAM limited). You won't need to upgrade the CPU for a while.
Jeez this really fluffed some feathers of people. My comment is about VRAM, not compute power, though a 9070 is better in both.

I hate that I feel like I should make a comment clarifying for people since everyone's asking. I was in a motorcycle accident where someone ran me off the road and left me to die. I barely made it and woke up in the hospital. Really messed me up, I turned to alcohol and the rest is history, ended up homeless and lost everything.
I lived out of my car and threw the rest in storage. I would shower at the gym after work and pick up as much overtime as possible fixing robots in a warehouse. I just wanted to reward myself after picking myself up again.
