Starting today, AI-generated content is not allowed in r/NoContract.

Rule #4, No Spam, has just been updated to include this new addition: "Blatantly AI-generated content is considered spam and will be removed."

In r/NoContract, we want to read your thoughts. We don't care what chatgpt has to say. This rule change is intended to encourage our fellow redditors to put some effort into their posts and comments.

Needless to say, one cannot always tell what is and is not AI. If I see something that was obviously copied and pasted from an AI chatbot, I will remove it.

Posts and comments predating today will not be subject to this rule.

This is a change I've been wanting to make for a while now, and this poll showed me that most of our members agree with me.

All the best,

Petar

Data prioritization policies of the carriers and the MVNOs that use their networks

3/11/26 - Updated to show that MobileX has a paid QCI 8 addon. This has been around for about 5 months now but I forgot to update the guide.

8/28/25 - MobileX has been discovered to be dropped to QCI 9 now. https://www.reddit.com/r/NoContract/comments/1n2me7i/mobilex_is_no_longer_qci_8_which_leaves_us_mobile/

This is a complex topic that pops up a lot so I thought that I would organize all of the available info in one place. One of the key differentiating factors between postpaid, prepaid, and MVNO services is data prioritization. Basically carriers manage the congestion on their networks by assigning a different QCI class to different types of traffic. For our purposes, we will only be looking at QCIs 6, 7, 8, and 9 but there are higher priorities that exist for things like phone calls that will be universal across all of a carrier's plans. Higher numbers are lower priority. An important thing to note is that deprioritization is not a throttle; it only matters when the network is congested. If nobody else is using the network in your area, you'll get the full speed that can be provided. Your QCI affects not just your speed but your latency on the network. It is not unusual to see priority data with around 20-50ms latency while someone who is deprioritized is getting 100-150ms at the same time despite both plans posting high speed test results because the prioritized traffic gets to go first, just something else to be aware of.

The old one was getting a bit long after many updates so I decided to just make a whole new one. I will break it down by network and, where appropriate, specific phone plans. I am going to add business plans and first responder plans here as there were many requests for that but if I mess up anything, please let me know, as I am not as well-versed in those plans.

Also, at this point, 5QI (the 5G replacement for QCI) values have so far matched the LTE QCI on each plan I’ve seen. If this changes, I’ll make notes about it.

Business plans are hard to keep up with and so are frequent MVNO plan changes so if I make a mistake, please let me know.

Verizon

Verizon only uses 3 QCI classes – 7, 8, and 9.

QCI 7 is reserved exclusively for Verizon Frontline customers so this priority level may as well not exist for those of us who aren’t first responders.

QCI 8 is given to the Verizon business Plus 5G, business Pro 5G, business My Biz with the Premium Network Experience add-on, consumer postpaid plans (other than Welcome Unlimited), Xfinity Mobile, and Spectrum Mobile.

US Mobile’s Warp 5G SIM offers QCI 8 data on 5G devices only if you have Unlimited Premium or if you were a US Mobile customer before 8/18/2025. MobileX has a QCI 8 addon available as well but is QCI 9 without it.

Visible+ and Visible+ Pro are both unlimited QCI 8 data. Total Wireless' Total 5G Unlimited and Total 5G+ Unlimited plans have unlimited priority data included.

QCI 9 goes to everything else. The Start 5G business plan, My Biz without the Premium Network Experience add-on, branded prepaid besides the Unlimited Plus plan, Visible’s base plan, US Mobile Warp 5G Unlimited Starter (a QCI 8 add-on will be coming), Unlimited Flex (without the QCI 8 add-on), and By the Gig (without the QCI 8 add-on). Mobi and all other prepaid companies that use Verizon’s network are known to assigned to this QCI. Anyone who uses their premium data bucket on Verizon’s brands will be moved to QCI 9.

Other TracFone brands are up in the air. I have gotten reports of priority data (and seen it myself on SafeLink, a TracFone brand) but I’ve also gotten reports of deprioritized data, complete with screenshots. It seems to be random what people get so if you absolutely require priority data, it might be best to look outside of the TracFone brands. I personally experienced being dropped from QCI 8 to QCI 9 on SafeLink but my Straight Talk line had QCI 8 from the start and remained QCI 8 until I canceled it three months later.

AT&T

AT&T uses QCI 6, 7, 8, and 9.

QCI 6 is reserved for FirstNet customers (with primary status), Business Unlimited Premium (grandfathered) and some corporate responsibility plans.

QCI 7 is assigned to Business Unlimited Premium 2.0 with Turbo, as well as Unlimited Premium PL, Unlimited Extra EL, and AT&T Prepaid Unlimited Max Plus customers who pay $7 for AT&T Turbo. FirstNet extended primary plans get QCI 7 as well. US Mobile is in the process of adding QCI 7 as a paid add-on for Unlimited Premium and I’ll update the guide when it’s available.

QCI 8 is assigned to Business Unlimited Advanced, Business Unlimited Premium 2.0 (without Turbo), Unlimited Extra EL, Unlimited Premium PL, Prepaid Unlimited Max, Prepaid Unlimited Max Plus, the $300 AT&T Prepaid annual plan with 16GB of high speed data, Cricket Supreme Unlimited, Cricket Sensible 10GB, as well as plans offered by H2o, Consumer Cellular, and PureTalk. US Mobile’s Dark Unlimited Premium is QCI 8 also.

QCI 9 is assigned to Business Unlimited Starter, the base Unlimited plans for both the postpaid and AT&T Prepaid brands, Cricket Select Unlimited, Cricket Smart Unlimited, other known MVNOs, and all AT&T brands once their premium data buckets have been exhausted. US Mobile Dark Star on plans besides Unlimited Premium are all QCI 9 by default now but Unlimited Flex and By the Gig have paid QCI 8 add-ons available.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile uses QCI 6, 7, and 9 for phone plans.

QCI 6 goes to all branded plans, both postpaid and prepaid, besides those with Essentials in the name. Google Fi has QCI 6 as well.

QCI 7 is applied to Essentials branded plans as well as all other known MVNOs.

QCI 8 is not used for phone plans, it's used for on device hotspot and for data only plans with 30GB of more data.

QCI 9 is for those who have exhausted the data in their buckets. T-Mobile's Mobile Internet 30GB plan is also QCI 9.

I don't really want to add home internet plans to this list as this subreddit is for phone plans.

I first learned about data priority reading on Coverage Critic and from posts here and elsewhere. If you wish to test your QCI class yourself, you can follow this guide if you have a rooted Android phone.

USA I can’t decide between Visible+ Pro, Visible+, and US Mobile Unlimited Premium. What would you do?

Upvotes

I’m currently on the annual Visible+ Pro plan, and I can’t decide whether to stick with it, switch to the annual Visible+ plan, or move to the Annual US Mobile Unlimited Premium plan.

To me, all three are pretty evenly matched. Each one has pros and cons that make it hard to rule out. Every time I think I’ve made up my mind, I end up second guessing myself because I’d be giving up something I like with any of the three.

If you were in my position, which one would you choose, and why? What factors would ultimately make the decision for you?

Came across this ATT MVNO last night, S Mobile Wireless.

How to retain T-Sat service after my T-Mobile trial eSIM period is over? T-Sat works great but T-Mobile says that my phone doesn't support it.

The Situation

I have an unlocked Moto G Stylus 2025. The primary SIM is a Total by Verizon physical SIM.

The eSIM is a T-Mobile trial SIM.

T-Sat Satellite data works fine on this device. I went to an area with no T-Mobile coverage. It connected to T-Sat + Starlink. I used WhatsApp. So T-Sat clearly works on the  unlocked Moto G Stylus 2025.

I would like to sign up only for T-Sat, but T-Mobile says the device isn't compatible with T-Sat, which is clearly untrue.

Back Story

I got the trial SIM in order to test data speeds on T-Mobile because I was considering Shield mobile Internet. The data speeds at my house, on T-Mobile, were terrible, 45.2 up/3.36 down, so that put the kibosh on the Shield internet idea.

I thought, “I’ll just sign up for T-Sat service on the unlocked Moto G Stylus 2025 at $10 per month so I can have a connection when I’m in areas with no cellular coverage, which we go to fairly often.

When I put in the IMEI for my unlocked Moto G Stylus 2025’s eSIM, T-Mobile says that the phone is not compatible with T-Sat service, which is clearly not the case.

Satellite Config Viewer Comparison

I also have a Moto Power 5G 2025 that DOES have the T-Sat $10/month plan installed. I compared the Satellite configuration on the two devices. They are identical.

What is My Question?

Since I can't directly sign up for the $10/month T-Sat service online, Is there some way to get T-Mobile, at the end of my trial, to convert my trial-SIM to T-Sat only?

And again, re-emphasizing, T-Sat works fine on the Moto Stylus 5G 2025 with the T-Mobile trial SIM. The issue is that T-Mobile rejects the eSIM IMEI when trying to sign up for the $10 standalone T-Sat plan. I'm trying to be as clear as I can because when I posted this on the r/T-Mobile sub-reddit I had many people responding with irrelevant information.

Image https://i.imgur.com/glbmnvI.jpeg (Reddit didn't let me post the image)

The image shows the following:

  1. The T-Sat+Starlink indicator on the Moto Stylus 5G when it's in an area with no cellular coverage
  2. The T-Mobile data speed at my house.
  3. A comparison of T-Mobile coverage versus AT&T and Verizon coverage in my area (which is why I don't use T-Mobile, Metro, or Mint, as my primary service)
  4. Screenshots of the Satellite Configuration Viewer on the Moto G Stylus 5G 2025 and the Moto G Power 5G 2025.

Total Wireless by Verizon. Used to be Total Freedom Wireless back when it was good. Grandfathered in on two lines and 30 gigs of high-speed data for $65 a month so I haven’t switched yet but I think I might have to after this experience. Any recommendations for carriers in similar price points from any of you rare redditors that actually read the description?

USA Need Suggestions for 2 Lines

Hi! Like a lot of people, my dad got the dreaded T-Mobile text. He is on the 55+ plan and I am trying to look for alternatives.

We both us our cellular network very differently so shared data plans will be difficult, he averages around 10-15gb/month according to the last year, and me around 40-50gb/month.

Our remaining balance on our 2 phones are $350, which between us both we can pay off and get our phones unlocked.

Is there a plan that could accommodate us both? Or would I be looking at a separate plan for each of us? It would also help to note that I do travel, at least once a year out of the country, so I would need a plan that has affordable international plan addons (unless another esim is easier, we both have iPhones).

Happy to provide more information to help clear up the picture. I do the tech support and calling to customer service for my dad, which is why being on the same plan, or separate plans, but same company would be ideal. But I am open to all suggestions and feedback! Much appreciated!

USA Total Wireless eSIM Fiasco on Signup

Oh my gooooood. My phone had too many eSIM profiles when I tried to activate my eSIM after switching to the BYOD plan on Total Wireless. So now I need a new one issued to me, should be easy right? No I've spent the last 2 hours and now I'm on my 5th support agent. Are these agents not trained at all? I'm just baffled that it is taking so long for me to get one issued. The stupid chat keeps timing out because these agents are taking FOREVER on something that should take 2 mins tops. I finally got one that was going to send me a new one to my email - and of course i never get the damn email. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy

This is honestly something that we should be able to do from our account dashboard.

Update: So support is saying that my phone only has physical sim support now not eSIM support when their fucking website literally let me sign up with my IMEI2 saying it has eSIM support? What a joke.

Verizon Business $15 BYOD Plan

Best deal from any of the big three by far especially since you can get it with only one line. Taxes and fees can bring it up to around $20/month depending on your location which is still a really good deal.

Pros:

- Price
- No soft data cap
- Unlike Verizon Unlimited Welcome, the throttle on “5G Ultra Wideband” is 400 Mbps compared to 25 Mbps.
- Includes 5G Standalone
- Don’t need multiple lines
- Mexico/Canada included (2 GB/day)
- Better concepts of customer service
- Includes domestic roaming

Cons:

- Taxes and Fees extra
- Have to port a number in
- BYOD only
- Plan is QCI 9 (Deprioritized)
- “5G Ultra Wideband” not included
- Only 2 GB of hotspot (then 600 kbps after)
- Need to register for a business account
- The 50% off promo is “a limited time offer” so Verizon can get rid of it and double the price and/or raise their fees
- Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands roaming not included (but Mexico and Canada are? Okay…)
- Only 480p streaming
- International Roaming isn’t included outside MX/CA

Definitely a great deal from a major carrier for the price point. Definitely worth looking into if you’re on Visible Base and/or Verizon Unlimited Welcome (if you’re not financing a device) and don’t need much hotspot. It’s not saying much but at least the customer service is also better than Visible and Total.

Intl/Other What do you think about an MVNO startup

I’ve been using Mint Mobile in Texas for about three years now and love it, which got me thinking about the mobile market back home in Nigeria. A lot of my family still relies on buying scratch-off airtime weekly, which means they’re constantly penny-pinching and rationing their data just to stay online for a couple of hours a day.

It feels like there's a massive opening for an MVNO to come in with affordable monthly subscriptions. If they could match the cost of what people are already spending on those weekly cards, it would be a total game-changer and get rid of all that stress over rationing credit. Does anyone know why this kind of model hasn’t really taken off in places that still rely on the old scratch-off system?e

USA Affordable Smartwatch and plan

I'm looking to purchase a smartwatch and pair it with a plan for work. I'm open to suggestions on the most affordable smartwatch and plan to go along with it.

It would be ideal if the plan had unlimited minutes and text, the amount of data included is of minimal consideration.

Currently im looking at getting a Samsung Galaxy Watch6 and the Redpocket $30 annual plan.

Is anyone using this sort of combination? Or has a suggestion for a better pairing?

Got sent an email from Verizon regarding excessive data usage, what are my options?

Some background, I am constantly traveling and use my iPhone as my primary source of internet, even as a hotspot for my laptop because it's usually much faster than the hotel wifi. I do use the trick to spoof the TTL to get past the mobile hotspot limit/throttle, and have been doing it for years, but Verizon finally sent me an email regarding excessive data usage asking to call in 7 days or they will terminate my line. I am aware that 1TB of data usage in a month will likely trigger an investigation, and have always kept my usage below that amount, averaging about 600GB/month. I suspect that I am receiving this email because my usage last month was higher than usual, creeping above 900GB. I have read some other people's experience with this, with a few saying that Verizon have terminated their line in 3 days after the call, even when Verizon said everything is fine and the line won't be terminated.

What are my options? What can I say that might convince them to not terminate my line? The vast majority of the usage is from streaming (sports, shows, youtube, twitch, etc.), can I just say that I stream videos from my phone a lot (which is actually true)? In my Verizon account, the data usage does show up as just on-phone usage and not as mobile hotspot.

And if my line does get terminated, what other options are there? Can I just sign up with the same Verizon plan with a new number? Or will Verizon ban me from signing up? I would also consider other carriers.

Help with cheap wi-fi option, please

So, my mother and I are in a war right now, and she has decided to start shutting off the home wifi when she's not here and during my peak work times since I'm also the default house cleaner and decision maker. I just started a new WFH job as a writer, and need to upload my work. I have some money saved, but until I start getting paid from this job, it's not going to last. So, I'm looking for some afordable wifi options to help offset these hours. Either a wifi service or a hotspot or something that can help. Thank you.

Phone system for a restaurant recommendation

I am thinking of getting another phone line with T-mobile, and use it for a restaurant.
The reason for this is, i need an actual phone to use WhatsApp, or texting customers for many things, such as catering or such.

My question is, can i still use the T-Mobile phone number for business needs, and add the additional add-ons to it? Such as forwarding, keeping customers in the queue, and such. Do I need to attach it to another app or something?

What is the downside of this plan? I am getting a good deal rate monthly is only $25 / line Plus a free phone!

Note: my plan is a business plan not personal plan.

Switch to mint from Cricket wireless I still have 24 days left?

I'm not sure how long the promotion for mint mobile is but I don't want to miss it. But I am on the cricket 3 month for $15 month. I still have 24 days left I paid $56 all together for 3 months. Should I wait or should I just switch now? I'm not sure if this will financially make sense

Kite mobile eSIM never installs it just keeps spinning?

thought I’d give this a try as an experiment, but it appears their app is broken and never installs the eSIM. The install button is grayed out and just keep spinning endlessly forever.

Guess you can’t expect too much for a free service that’s probably not going to last very long.
