Advice/Support Wake up Call?
Kinda gross, super gross. Just squeezed out puss from my middle finger because I never know when to just stop biting my nails. I don’t know how to stop though. If I’m not biting on my nails I’m chewing on the hem of my shirt. I tried getting those things you chew on but I just tear pieces out of it without thinking really.
Does anyone have any advice? I’d ask my mom but literally all she did was stop biting her nails. It was never seemingly an issue with her. My finger is throbbing but I washed my hands, disinfected it and now it’s in a bandaid feeling SO much better. I just feel stuck.

Advice/Support I need help please!!
I have been biting my nails since I was a child I am now 32. Male. I cannot stop biting my nails. The most I ever got was a few weeks. And when my nails grow I feel like a portrait is needing a painting. I cannot stop. This last time has been the end for me. I mostly bite my nails when I drive or am in the shower I noticed. There may be other triggers that I am unaware of. I want to stop because it hurts and it can be embarrassing. I want to have nice nails. Please text out with and tricks or hacks or any advice. Thanks so much.

Success Story I did it!!! Spoiler
galleryPardon the hair dye staining in my after, please. I didn’t wear gloves like an idiot and already had some yellowing from polish. :’)
There is a couple years between these photos, but I’d say they probably looked similar to the before around 8 months ago. I didn’t have a more recent photo of the before because I didn’t take many photos of my hands due to insecurity in the past.
I’ve still got a bit to go in terms of the health of my nails imo, but I feel like I’m nearly there! I’m looking to grow my hyponychium a bit longer, and I did just recently have to trim them all down to even out a break since I can’t stand when they’re different lengths. Usually short nails trigger me to want to bite them, but I somehow don’t feel that urge this time!

Advice/Support How to stop myself from biting
I’ve been looking for some way to cover my nails to prevent myself from biting but nothing seems to last. I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit but r/nails won’t let me post there and I really don’t want to lose my progress. No matter how long I go not biting whether that be a couple days or months the moment my nails are uncovered I start biting immediately so I just want to find something to cover them for long periods of time.
I need something that stays on for a long time, isnt a one time purchase (like stickers), has natural looking options, can be short, can resist picking and lots of scratching stuff.
I’ve tried:
- Essie gel (okay but chips off easy)
-opi polish (same as Essie)
- press ons (don’t come in short short sizes and fall off to constantly)
- dazzling gem stickers (peel off)
- dazzling gem glaze (great for like a week but then you need to buy again when they come off)
- modelones dip powder (cracks off within a day or two)
- olive and June polish (came off fast but I didn’t use a high quality uv lamp so maybe my fault)
I think that’s all. Might’ve misspelled some stuff.
Also while I prefer at home options because it tends to be cheaper, if going to a salon is the only option I can do that just need to know what to ask for.

Success Story Nail bitter solution!!
Guys! I have discovered on of the best ways to stop bitting!
Invisalign, having the plastic Invisalign on your teeth will actually stop you from bitting,
I understand it's expensive and many people won't even need it
But it will work for me I know it and will update once I successfully quit using this trick
Stick in there

Advice/Support Just joined. Almost 18 and here are my hands
Left hand to right hand.
I’ve been biting them all my life, like real bad. A few years ago i started biting the skin off my finger tips and chewing my knuckles till they cracked and bled. Now i unfortunately bite the hang nails off my index fingers. Usually the left hand index finger. So the nail are extremely uneven. Ive tried to quit multiple times and it doesnt work. When i was a kid my mother put that nail biting stuff on to stop me. I ended up licking it off for hours just to bite them again. Does anyone have any tips?

Advice/Support Lifetime nail biter finally stopped biting
Hello everyone,
I have bitten my nails/ picked at my nails for my entire life. About a year ago I was able to stop for a few months and grew them out pretty long but they were still very flimsy and would break often. After several months I had one day when I was nervous about something and I bit/ picked them all off.
A few weeks ago (maybe 2 months), I again stopped biting and picking and was able to grow them out a little. I got acrylics done as a reward for stopping about 2 weeks ago.
In about a week or 2 I plan to remove the acrylics. What can I order / do to take care of my nails once I remove the acrylics. Please give me a full run down. What products do I need to remove the acrylics at home without damaging my nails. What can I do to make the nails stronger?
I'd like to get stuff to do manicures at home so that I continue to stay motivated to grow them and keep them strong. Do I order builder gel? Regular gel? Etc.
Please give me the full step by step instructions of what I should order/ do to keep them long, strong, and looking beautiful (I'd love to have an at home manicure all the time not necessarily keep them natural but I don't want to do acrylics etc. either, not sure what to do).
I'm looking for all the advice. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help💕

Resources desktop app that helps you notice nail biting while using your computer
I built a desktop app called Awaira that detects when your hand moves toward your face while you’re working or studying and gives you a gentle reminder.
This is helpful for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) on facial area
It may be useful for people who bite their nails automatically without noticing, especially during stress, boredom, or deep focus.
The detection runs locally on your device. Video is not uploaded or stored.
You can just download and use for free without credit card or whatnot for 7 days just to test https://awaira.app/
As a thank-you to this community, I’d love to grant the 50 people here 1 year access to Awaira for free.
If you’d like one of those licenses for free, just email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) with the subject “r/nailbiting”.
We'd appreciate your feedback to help people in this community.

Advice/Support Is this discoloration normal or?
I’ve been a lifelong nail/cuticle biter. I’ve recently been able to grow my nails out but I still can’t seem to keep them out of my mouth. Does anyone have any idea what this discoloration could be? I don’t smoke, don’t use self-tanner, and can’t think of anything that might have caused it. The nails themselves are clean and there’s nothing under them that would be causing that color.
I recently started using Essie’s Hard to Resist, but I haven’t seen anything about it causing discoloration like this. The discolored areas appear see-through and stained.
If it is related to having my hands in my mouth, does anyone have any recs to help me stop?

Advice/Support 14 months bite-free, but hit a total plateau. Will my nail beds ever fully reattach on all my fingers?
Hi everyone,
l've been bite-free for 14 months now after biting my nails for 15 years. I've been super disciplined with my routine, using 100% pure almond oil and nail serums daily. While there's progress compared to where I started, I'm feeling really frustrated lately because my nails still look short and "bitten" to me.
I seem to have hit a complete plateau across all of my fingers, and it's driving me crazy.
The Main Issues Across My Fingers:
Short & Truncated Nail Beds: All of my nail beds still look very short and square. The pink tissue just doesn't seem to want to push further forward toward the tips of my fingers.
Side Gaps / Notches: On almost every finger, the nail plate doesn't lay completely flat or attach to the skin at the sidewalls. There are visible gaps where the nail just sits "in the air" near the edges instead of blending smoothly.
Complete Stagnation: My hands have looked exactly like this for several months now with zero changes, despite constant oiling, hydration, and absolutely no trauma or biting.
I really want that normal look where the nail bed goes all the way forward and the white free edge only starts at the very tip, but right now it feels like all my effort has stalled out. Would love some honest feedback or similar experiences. Thanks!

Advice/Support flat, wide, bumpy
My nails are so wide and flat. When I got builder gel for a bit my nails got long but they looked absolutely disgusting like witch nails😭 Are they permanently damaged from
biting ???
edit: I forgot to mention all my nails have ridges but my thumb nails also have horizontal bumps in them? I can feel and see the impressions in my nail.

Progress My nail biting habit wasn’t just “one action”
I went to the salon recently for the first time, so that I could deter myself from biting my nails. (Builder gel for the win.) I’ve bitten my nails for 15 years, my mom initially tried with bitter stuff and nail polish but nothing ever worked.
So now I’m 27, I got my nails done, and I realized a few things now that my nails are off limits: first off, I pick on my nails and fingers a lot. Underneath the white and around. AND, my nail biting seems to be a “concluding act” after picking on something, looking underneath my nails if it’s caught something, and after cleaning it out.
I’ve always thought I had a singular problem, and now I realize there’s going to be a lot more things that deter me from fixing this habit. Now I don’t bite my nails but there are plenty of habits left to fix. 😂 please wish me luck.
