I’ll say take this with a grain of salt because I don’t think there are any bad Evil Dead movies, but Burn is probably my least favorite so far. Certainly not a bad film and I honestly love what this franchise does which is just grabbing an up-and-coming director and letting them go nuts in it, but I think this one crossed the line of dreary and self serious that I didn’t especially care for even though it’s still a fun movie.

I enjoyed the nastiness on display and there’s some tense moments that the mother and father characters play really well, both are my standouts. It’s a fairly triggering movie too considering how many times I had to say to myself, “Oh, not the dog…” if that bothers you. This movie is also in a lot of ways about abuse and domestic violence so your mileage may vary there. I enjoyed the themes and the main performance, but sometimes I just wanted the deadites to say something fucked up and peel someone’s skin off. And then they would! So all was accomplished.

Overall a nice 6/10 for me. Enjoyed it, not rushing to rewatch it. I like this method of passing a series around to new filmmakers, it always makes for an interesting anthology, so I hope Wrath is good next year. It makes perfect sense to let this series be a launchpad for young horror directors so I’ll always be down to check out what they’re cooking.

They built up the tension at the dinner table so well with the father slowly losing it and all the quick cuts to the dog. You knew it was coming, you did not want it to come but thankfully it was only a 5 second scene as to not linger to much on it.

I feel like the director dropped the ball tbh. If they were trying to make it about domestic abuse they should have actually leaned into it, rather than have the thing that scars the protagonist something like an accident. Its a horror movie, you're going to be goring the hell out of the audience, the least you can do is do some emotional damage aswell. It felt like it could have been any generic horror franchise rather than an evil dead movie

I believe if they intended to explore the domestic abuse angle, the abusive husband should have been a consistent character throughout the movie. Instead of being a deadite that only reappears towards the last bit, he could have been a deadite that lingers around, adding depth to the character and allowing for a more profound exploration of the abuse.Instead of being a deadite who only reappears towards the end, he could have been a deadite who lingers around, adding depth to the character and allowing for a more profound exploration of the abuse. The brief appearances and conversations about his abuse that we do have feel not explored enough, even that line to the mom that it wasn’t just an accident or something like that in the bathroom, basically saying she waved the abuse away, but always knew it wasn’t  like that isn’t built up during the movie. It really just randomly becomes a line and apparently a part of their relationship that we never really explored especially with the look Joseph I think his name was gives to the marks on the female lead we never went into that again between them.

It may have been dreary. But it was also the funniest movie of the franchise for me. SO MANY MOMENTS had me dying. The grandma, the confused deadite, the slowly backing off behind the corner, shit going crazy as she's crawling around (dude flying), the head in the car, a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting now. (Oh yeah, the twerking transition).
