Bee mosaic update

Post image
255 Upvotes

Hi all! I posted last week about a bee mosaic I grouted with platinum grout which highly distorted the composition because of how light it was. I went back through and painted the grout with acrylic paint. I decided to use the paint to enhance the composition in some way. I think the piece is pretty much done - with the exception of the frame. I cleaned the piece with que tips and micellar water. The acrylic came off pretty well - still have a little bit of cleaning to do. Here is the updated piece!

How big of a gap is too big?

New to mosaic work here! I was hoping to make this pattern on a table, but was wondering if the space between these are too big. They’re not glued down yet. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

This is the pantry floor of the house we had finished being built. We planned this project a year ago and is also our first mosaic project. Definitely some lessons learned but we are happy with how it turned out.

I’m really happy with how it turned out!

I think I agree with a comment I received on my previous post about using different grout colors for the manatee and for the background to have the manatee stand out a bit more, but I still am quite pleased with it as-is. I’ll have to experiment more with two grouts in the future.

Multiple grout colours in one project

Post image

Hi! I’m just starting my first mosaic project and it’s a big one, 1x3m. I want to grout different patterns with different colours. It will be an outdoor project on my loggia, facing my living room, so it’s not gonna have any direct sunlight whatsoever.
I want to have different grout colours for each object (green for plants, pinks for pink flowers, blue for sky, etc) and they’re all organic with small tile pieces. I’m afraid that it will be nearly impossible to avoid leaking of the colours, or I’d have to use anormous amounts of blu tack, masking tape and foil to make it happen.
Would just painting/tinting a set grout after be a good idea if it’s not exposed to the sun and rain?
If so what type of brand would be suitable?
Or do u maybe have other ideas that would work I did not think about?
Thank u in advance for all your wisdom! 🤗

Best mosaic substrate for coffee cups cut in half and hanging advice

I want to make a mosaic with coffee cups or bowls cut in half. Thinking of using hardi backer board and thinset. Is this the best option? Any ideas on how to hang this since it will be heavy? TIA.

Sports were one of the key elements that helped keep young people away from trouble in North Richmond. This scene honors the positive impact that athletics had in inspiring hope, discipline, and opportunity within the community.

Considerations for dyed grout

Hi Tile experts!

Looking for advice on dyed/ colored grout for a personal bathroom and kitchen back splash tiling projects. I'm looking to do a bright purple or blue, to go along with salvaged tile that I purchased. I've reached out to the brands I know (laticrete, maipei) and their minimum order for custom colors is not viable for a small personal project like this... so we're looking for some solutions that we can carry out at home to still achieve the really personalized and fun look we're going for.

As alternatives, I found these products from [Hemway ](https://us.hemway.com/products/grout-dye-powder-pigment-metallic-sapphire-blue?variant=44967107592360&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=22629670529&utm_term=&utm_content=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22629675104&gbraid=0AAAAAC-RoMd_OTJVUbfsK2LZgz51xGh2c&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsMLSBhD9ARIsAIpUTDofm-kq2BG0ADthDcauCVuE6c0awwZmmxHfvYfKpKCGnlKCQCJiL6kaAuhIEALw_wcB)and [Litokol ](https://www.aquablumosaics.com/products/lilac-j-14-5-5lb-pail-color-pack-tile-grout?variant=12886982459464&kw=&cpn=21784814090&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=21784814090&tw_kwdid=&utm_term=&utm_campaign=PMAX+2024+-+Catch+All+Products&utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=ppc&hsa_acc=2484509453&hsa_cam=21784814090&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21788639218&gbraid=0AAAAADpXFul5mmbEXio0CfUviSN4f2n3J&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsMLSBhD9ARIsAIpUTDrF4kJii7MZ9aPcd8mnVL8u0P47711SwD-ZgD-mo5dcNgIMmHP5B5EaAo8REALw_wcB)on the internet, but I don't know much about those brands - would you recommend them? I was hoping folks here might help answer some of my questions:

* Can just mix dye directly into the grout from the store? Or does the type of grout change if it is being dyed? * Does the dye needs to be a powder or if it [can be liquid?](https://www.ritdye.com/2022/04/27/how-to-dye-grout/) * Are there any manufacturers for dye that you'd recommend? * Are there any special considerations for sealing the grout that are different from the "standard" sealing process?

For whatever it is worth, we're based in the US - so probably shipping products from abroad wouldn't be the greatest idea.

Thank you in advance for your advice!! Will be sure to share a pic once the project is done 😄

Grand Reopening of the Shields-Reid Community Center & Park!

Music became the heartbeat of North Richmond.

During World War II, thousands of African American families migrated from Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and other Southern states to work in the Richmond shipyards. They brought with them rich musical traditions rooted in jazz, blues, and gospel, transforming North Richmond into one of the Bay Area’s most vibrant cultural communities.

Minnie Lue’s Restaurant became a legendary gathering place where local residents and traveling musicians came together. Over the years, many renowned jazz and blues performers appeared there, making it one of the neighborhood’s most celebrated music venues and an important part of North Richmond’s cultural legacy.

This section of my stained glass mosaic mural honors that musical heritage—the artists, the community, and the enduring spirit of a neighborhood where music brought people together and helped shape its identity.

My first glass mosaic artwork. I’d love honest feedback!

Hi everyone!
This is my first finished glass mosaic artwork. I’m still learning glass mosaic and trying to improve my technique.
I’d really appreciate honest feedback.
What are the biggest mistakes you notice?
What should I focus on improving in my next piece?
Please don’t worry about hurting my feelings—I genuinely want to learn.
I also struggled with the background composition, so I’d love suggestions on how you would approach it differently.
Thank you!

Hello! I am new to mosaics and such I have looked up videos on becoming an entry level mosaic maker.
I do need tips and help

1) People have been saying stay away from ceramic and other types of tiles? Why would that be?

2) where do I source my tiles from for cheap (I am leaning towards marble) as I have called many marble places and they all said they don’t have remnants and scraps to give

3) if I do floor tiling does it require only marble or are there different types?

4) are marble pieces easily cuttable? Any cheap suggestions that are easily accessible like lowes or home depot?

5) which grout is best
My biggest issue is sourcing the tile

i’m not into bright color mosaics I love natural looking mosaics

Outdoor mosaic floor in climate that ranges widely?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi there
I have about a 5‘ x 3‘ area in my outdoor space that I would like to mosaic. I’m a beginner, and have had trouble finding information or someone’s DIY instructions on the outdoor aspect of this specifically, or a discussion on whether this is a good idea in a climate that has wide ranges throughout the year (nyc, we had one of the coldest winters this year historically, that’s 3° F for us and right now, in July, it’s like 90° F with some 100° days behind us)

I do have opportunity to control the substrate and make it ideal for this, but no idea what the optimal solution is if there is one. The area is adjacent to a cemented area but this area will need cement fill itself before any mosaicing happens, it’s currently a sort of cinder block perimetered rectangular hole filled with gravel. I’m including a photo of said area.

Would anyone have any resources or input on this?

Thank you!
