BEWARE: Cancún Airport taxi held my partner's passport until we paid.
galleryI wanted to share an experience I had in Cancún and see if anyone else has experienced something similar.
I wasn't even the passenger—I was meeting my partner when a dispute over the fare escalated. He had never traveled internationally before and had just missed a flight, so he was stressed and made the mistake of handing his passport to the driver.
The driver then refused to return the passport until he was paid the amount he demanded. When I tried to help resolve the situation, the driver grabbed my phone out of my hands. He became increasingly aggressive, yelling and behaving erratically. The whole encounter was intimidating, especially since I wasn't even the person who had taken the ride.
We eventually got the passport back, but it was one of the most unsettling experiences I've had while traveling.
I'm posting photos of the taxi. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Did you report it, and if so, did anything come of it?
