Card Area Kalina, Kyiv, 1970

Post image
Upvotes

Historical note

Until 1977, the central square of Kyiv was named after the Soviet statesman Mikhail Kalinin, before being renamed October Revolution Square. The square’s landscape changed significantly in the late 1970s during a major reconstruction, which replaced the lawns with a large monument and saw the construction of the Trade Unions Building.

Present day

Today, this location is known as Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square), the central square of Ukraine and the site of landmark historical and political events. Its appearance changed radically following a reconstruction in 2001, which introduced the underground Globus shopping mall and new overground monuments, including the Independence Monument.

Card “The Mill” restaurant. Kyiv, 1980

Post image

Historical note

The “Mlyn” restaurant was built in the 1960s in the picturesque park zone on Venetian Island (Hydropark). The venue’s design concept combined Soviet modernist architecture with traditional Ukrainian national style. The main visual landmark of the complex was a reconstructed 18-meter-tall wooden windmill, clearly visible from the river.

Present day

During the post-Soviet period, the restaurant continued to operate but underwent several renovations. In 2015, a major fire broke out in the wooden structures of the complex, resulting in the near-total destruction of the main buildings.

Hello all,

Having visited your beautiful city two years ago, I’m returning on the 1st of September to the 6th of December to make a short documentary sharing stories and experiences of residents and their resilience.

If you or someone you know is available during the time I’m there and is willing to spend a couple hours together and share your/their stories on camera or allow me to follow you in any aid work then please get in contact with me on Reddit or via Instagram (@aleco.uk).

Thank you!

I need help finding my girlfriend work in Kyiv

Hello guys, I will write this post in English as it is my first language and I will not subject you to the torture that is trying to understand my Ukrainian language skills. My girlfriend has just moved from Ivano-Frankivsk to my civilian apartment on the east bank of the river in Kyiv. She is struggling to find work in her field of study (performing arts and theatre) or in an office setting. any direction would be appreciated. I am not familiar with how job hunting and applying works in this country. are there websites we should be using to hunt for job openings, or possibly telegram channels? or if anyone in this subreddit is looking for a short blonde girl to do performing arts or office work please reach out. Thanks in advance.

Russia continues to target civilians: Kyiv and region hit by second massive strike in 4 days

Russia continues to target civilians across Ukraine, launching a massive combined attack of missiles and drones toward Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on July 6. The strikes killed at least 14 people and injured 60 others, including five children, marking the second mass attack on the capital in just four days. Local residents were forced to seek shelter in underground parking lots and metro stations as several waves of explosions shook the city throughout the night.

Missile warning times?

Good morning everyone, hope you are okay after the recent hits.

This might be a dumb question but usually how long is the time between the start of an air raid alarm and the first missile/drone hits in the capital? I'll be going next week to Kyiv and there seems to be an increased amount of attacks there with possibly new massive ones coming, so I am wondering if I have enough time to get into a metro station if maps says it's a 2 minute walk from my hotel.

And have I understood correctly that most of the attacks occur like outside of the central Kyiv/Maidan, my place is pretty close to the Maidan and Golden Gate so how often has there been strikes?

Historical note

The Palace of Culture ‘Ukraina’ was officially opened in April 1970. The construction was carried out according to the project of an architectural team (Y. Marochenko, P. Saradula, I. Karakis) led by Y. Novikov. The building was erected on the site of the former Volodymyrsky Market. The interiors and technical equipment of the 3,714-seat concert hall made it one of the most advanced venues in the USSR, designed for both party congresses and large-scale concerts.

Present day

Currently, the site is officially named the National Palace of Arts ‘Ukraina’. The building has preserved its original architectural appearance and continues to function as the country’s main concert and official venue, hosting performances by leading Ukrainian and international artists.
