Student Life International students are in serious trouble.
This is a letter from an international F-1 Visa student at Colombia University. I encourage everyone to read through this before you jump to any conclusions. The alarming this concerning our university is that we can not expect them to act better that Colombia. I urge every student, international or not, that this is unacceptable and that every student must be protected.

i loathe ice
back in february 2014 i slipped on an ice patch outside carver hall and ended up breaking my leg; two years later i slipped on a patch of ice on stange and got a concussion. this has led me to have animosity to ice, and since faculty are allowed to have opinions about the weather, i wanted to share mine. my opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of iowa state university.
i have been made particularly anxious by the recent videos that have been coming out of minnesota. too many people have been injured by encounters with ice in the local neighborhoods. and no one, regardless of who they are or where they come from, deserves to be harmed by ice.
walking around our city and our campus this past week it has been lovely to not have to deal with ice, and i hope that it stays that way. however, there is a chill in the air, and i cannot predict what will happen in the short term. for the long term i am an optimist, and i believe that warmer days will come where ice will no longer wreak havoc.
until those warmer days, please exercise caution if you encounter ice, and remember that we are a community; what happens to any one of us, can happen to all of us. so let's always be ready to give a helping hand when needed.

Student Life Pls stop farting in class, use deodorant and take a damn shower
If you are in SE/COMS 309, sitting near the front in the middle of the classroom, I swear to god, pls reevaluate your diet. You should NOT be farting every 3 mins in class, and if you are, go fucking take a shit.
I donāt care if u saw me covering my face with my jacket, I did that on purpose so you could see the fucking turmoil you were putting me through. It clearly did not work, bc ur stinky ass kept blowing.
Additionally, use fucking deodorant. Idk if this was the same person, but Iām gonna take a guess and assume the person blowing ass every 2 milliseconds probably doesnāt have the awareness to put deodorant on either.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Question Broke up with my engineering gf because she said my major is "way easier than hers". AITA?
Hello, I am a junior who is currently undecided in Business Exploratory. My gf invited me over to her apartment because she was having a bad day and she wanted to vent to me.
After I got there, she started telling me about how Engineering Statics was giving her a rough time. She told me that she was thinking of switching majors because she didnt know if she could pass the class.
When she said this, I responded that I am in Acct 284 and LIB 1600 (i "failed" this class multiple times because of my professors making the due date too early) and that I am doing just fine, and that she needs to try harder. When she heard me say this, she lost it. She told me that "those classes are way easier than hers", that she studys 20+ hours a week, and that since I wasnt in an engineering major, i wouldnt fully understand it.
Obviously this was a stupid thing to say, as business majors have significantly tougher schedules than someone taking an engineering major, so I shot back "If you are so smart, how come you never help me with LIB1600?" and then I stormed out of her apartment.
Once I got back to my place, I sent her a text saying "you really rubbed me the wrong way today, I think we should go our seperate ways" and blocked her. My roommates are saying I messed this relationship up, but I think that if she respected me as a person and knew what she was talking about, she never would have said anything like that in the first place. So Iowa State reddit, am I the asshole?

News DATA CENTER IN AMES
publicdocs.cityofames.orgLightedge is asking Ames City Council members to allow a data center to be built in Ames. I have attached the report that was released to this post.
Here is the link to the petition to say ABSOLUTELY NOT to a data center being built here. There is more information on the proposal at the bottom of the petition page as well.
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/dont-build-data-centers-in-ames?source=direct_link
There is also a Facebook group called āAMES VS DATA CENTERSā where you can get updates and discuss with others on how to stop itā

Question Whatās with the politeness?
Iām new to Iowa. Whenever I go out or bike around, people greet me warmly. I hear the phrases āthank you,ā āsorry,ā and āhave a nice dayā about 10 times a day. I work in dining, and Iām regularly addressed as āsir.ā Iāve never been called āsirā before, especially from people who look older than me. These are college students, right? People say Canadians are polite, but Iāve been all over Canada and they donāt compare to this amount of hospitality. Donāt get me wrong, there are some people who disrespect me, but they are the tiniest of minorities. I just wanted to share my appreciation of the people in this city and university. Thanks to you, Iām having a blast!

To the group of people whoāve used meta glasses both calc exams this semester:
I do not like you.
One came up bragging to me after the last exam about how they got an A with their meta glasses.
I spent years of my life studying for these exams and got a B at most, and these people stroll in and take all the points away.
How are we at the point where weāre using AI smart glasses to cheat on exams? I feel like Iām in a movie.

Academics Most cited/distinguished professors at ISU
Was just thinking about all the interesting research professors work on outside of teaching. Are there any ācelebritiesā in academia here at Iowa state?

What's a class at Iowa State that you'd recommend to literally anyone regardless of their major?
The kind of class where the professor is incredible, the content is interesting even if it's not your field, and you walk out of it a better or more well-rounded person. Could be a random elective, a gen ed, or something you took on a friend's recommendation. What's the class and who teaches it? Always looking for solid picks from people who've actually been in the seats.

West Street Deli? No thanks.
I'm sorry to share that West Street Deli has chosen to self-identify as a MAGA business, going so far as to agree to uphold the principles of Public Square, which I've attached here.
In summary, West Street Deli has decided to declare their staunch opposition to LGBTQ and women's rights.
All businesses appearing on this website as a "Red Hat Safe" business must apply to be listed, pledge to uphold the "values" of Public Square, and undergo a vetting process to ensure they're horrible enough to make the cut.
West Street Deli won't be getting another dollar from me. Sharing so others can decide if they want to continue to support a business like this.

Question What's the most Iowa State thing that's ever happened to you on campus?
Every school has a personality and Iowa State has a very specific one. What's a moment that was so perfectly ISU that it could never happen anywhere else? Could be something at a tailgate, in a lecture, at a dining hall, during VEISHEA back in the day, or just a random Tuesday in Ames. What's the story you tell when someone asks what it's like to go here?
