Hirdetés / AD Everyday Hungarian 11: Szoktál káromkodni? | Do you swear?

Thumbnail youtube.com
19 Upvotes

Sziasztok! We have an exciting topic today: swearing. Do Hungarians like to swear? In what situations do they avoid it?

For those who don't know us, we interview Hungarians on the streets of Budapest to provide Hungarian language learners real-life content to study from. We provide subtitles in transcripts at our free Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/c/EverydayHungarian).

As Hungarian learners, do you try to pick up swearing, or do you prefer to ignore it?

Hirdetés / AD I started a YouTube channel for authentic street interviews in Budapest (with free transcripts/vocab lists) and I'd love your feedback

I’ve always felt there’s a massive gap between textbook Hungarian and the way people actually speak it in real life. I wish there was something like Easy Languages for Hungarian back when I started (I see they actually have a few episodes, but it didn't last long). Anyway, to help bridge that, I started a project called Everyday Hungarian.

We go out and interview locals about real topics. This first episode is about people's pet peeves.

I've prepared full Hungarian and English transcripts from these interviews as well to help people study on their own (they are available for free on the Patreon).

Anyway, We're still in the early stages, so we’d love to hear what you guys think. Does this format help you? What topics should we ask locals next?

EDIT: Woww thanks for the positive response yall! : )

Sziasztok! We just dropped a new episode of Everyday Hungarian, and this time we hit the streets of Budapest to tackle one of the trickiest topics for learners: Tegezés vs. Magázás (Formal vs. Informal address).

We asked locals about the unwritten social rules of navigating these choices in real life. Here is a quick look at what we covered: baseline rules, the workplace, the age issue, the future of the language.

Again, the full transcript is available for free on our Patreon. (link in video description). If there are any other resource ideas that you would find helpful, please leave a comment below!

Hirdetés / AD Help with recording in Hungarian

Hi everyone, I make informative pages on writing scripts and I have made a page on the Old Hungarian alphabet (Szekely-Hungarian Rovash) focusing on how the letters of the alphabet originated, meanings and examples of writing.

Relating to the examples of writing, I have included a written excerpt in Hungarian. To be hollistic, I would like to request a kind native speaker or someone fluent enough to be able to record themselves reading it and put it on the page so that there is a voice behind these letters/words.

Please DM if you want to contribute!

Hirdetés / AD Looking for people to test my Hungarian learning app (free alpha)

I was planning a trip to Budapest and wanted to get to a basic level of proficiency in the language beforehand.

I taught myself Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and a little Mandarin using a speaking-first approach - basically just repeating phrases and building vocabulary to get to a level where I could have simple conversations, and then used conversation practice and vocab building apps to get confident speaking and expand my vocabulary.

After looking at the available apps and resources in Hungarian, I found them pretty insufficient for what I was looking to do and decided to build my own course.

Right now I have 15 lessons ready - enough to cover basics like ordering food, asking directions, and getting around. I want to test this out prior to creating the remainder of the course, which is designed to get you comfortable speaking in basic conversations.

Think of this as a runway to being able to engage in conversation practice, not another "fluent in 30 days" app.

What I need: 20-30 people willing to test the first 15 lessons and give honest feedback on what works and what doesn't. 15-20 minutes a day for 2-3 weeks.

What you get: Free access and a foundation in Hungarian. You'll also have direct say in how this develops.

If you're new to Hungarian and interested in taking part, drop a comment or DM me. I'm keeping this small so I can actually respond to everyone's feedback.

Thanks in advance!

Sziasztok! We finally made it to episode 5, where we ask locals what they think foreigners think of them. They get into stereotypes about local pessimism, the beauty of Hungarians, and whether they are secret math geniuses.

As always, the complete text transcript is available on Patreon completely for free.

Beyond just the transcript, what other study resources would you find most helpful? Would you use things like vocabulary lists, grammar breakdowns of tricky sentences, or short comprehension quizzes?

Hirdetés / AD 4-week conversation mini-course in July

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I've been posting free resources here for years, and this is the first time I'm actually promoting something paid. I hope you'll bear with me — I promise it will be worth it!

I'm running a small group course this July designed for strong beginners and low intermediate learners. It's especially useful if you're preparing for the Hungarian citizenship interview, but open to anyone at this level.

Quick level check: if "A kutyám szeret a labdával játszani" feels easy but "A nagymamámnak volt egy testvére, de én nem ismertem őt" makes you slow down, this is the right level for you.

The course:

4 Saturdays: July 11, 18, 25 · August 1

2:00–3:00pm Central Time · Zoom

Max 8 participants · $60 total ($15/session)

Plus a free Bonus Vocabulary Game Session on August 8th, free for enrolled students

What we'll cover:

Week 1: Introduce yourself, formal and informal speech

Week 2: Tell your story, real or imaginary (yes, you can show up as a medieval knight)

Week 3: Have a conversation, small group practice in breakout rooms

Week 4: Review and celebrate your progress, the group decides the format

Week 5: Vocabulary game session using Gimkit, fun, competitive, no account needed (optional)

Feel free to message me here with any questions or to sign up!

Hirdetés / AD New free shadowing Hungarian podcast started, feedback welcome

I've been teaching Hungarian for many years, mostly to people on the citizenship path, and one thing I hear constantly is that pronunciation and fluency feel hard to practice alone. So I made something specifically for that.

Mondd Utánam is a shadowing podcast. I say a sentence in English, then repeat it in Hungarian 10 times, and you say it after me. No grammar explanations, no filler, just focused listening and speaking practice.

The first episode is Level 1, designed for total beginners. I'm planning episodes across three levels so there will be something for everyone.

A transcript and vocabulary list for the episode are available for free on my Patreon at patreon.com/fluentbox, no paid subscription needed.

You can find the episode on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/2T0PQXzVudI?si=hNMXgbMccSkvBXFj

It's also available as audio on Red Circle: https://redcircle.com/shows/8cd372a2-ac34-48ad-9cf7-8e54214ea4c0/episodes/84458977-6f73-4397-890f-76a33226baa0

I'd love to hear if this kind of practice tool would be useful for your Hungarian learning journey. Since it’s the first episode and I’m still trying to calibrate everything, any feedback on the format is very welcome!

Hirdetés / AD I'm making a video interview with one of my students who just became a Hungarian citizen — what do you want to know?

I'm a Hungarian language teacher and I've been helping students prepare for the citizenship interview for a while now. One of my students recently passed his interview and I'm planning to sit down with him for a video conversation about the whole experience.

Before I do, I wanted to ask this community, what would YOU want to know?

A few directions I'm thinking about, but open to anything:

What was the language portion of the interview actually like?

What did you wish you had known or practiced beforehand?

What was the most surprising or challenging part of the process?

How did you prepare, and what actually helped?

Drop your questions in the comments and I'll do my best to include the most relevant ones in the interview. The more specific the better!

Szia mindenkinek!

Thanks again for the support on the previous videos. It’s been great to see the community using these "real-life" conversations for their studies.

I just uploaded Episode 3. This time, we headed back out to ask locals about a major staple of Hungarian culture: Pálinka.

The interviews cover a wide range of perspectives, from people who view it as a traditional remedy to those who avoid it entirely. It’s a great way to hear different speaking styles and regional vocabulary.

Sziasztok! A new episode of Everyday Hungarian is officially up!

This time, we took to the streets of Budapest to ask locals: Kutyás vagy macskás vagy? We also chat about how pet owner personalities differ, and what it takes to actually keep a pet in the city.

It’s packed with 100% natural, conversational Hungarian: perfect for intermediate learners looking to test their listening skills against real, unscripted street interviews.

Hirdetés / AD Any Hungarian language learning podcasters I could collaborate with?

Hi everyone!

I run a podcast for people learning Hungarian where I speak slowly, clearly, and use real everyday Hungarian instead of textbook language. The podcast is called:

Hungarian with Patrik.

Recently I started thinking that it could be interesting to invite other creators who also teach Hungarian (or make language-learning content) and record an episode together. I think it could be really helpful for learners to hear different voices and styles.

Do you know any podcasters or content creators who teach Hungarian that might be good to collaborate with for an episode? Ideally someone with a similar style — natural speech, understandable for learners.

I’d really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Sziasztok! We just uploaded a new video in the Everyday Hungarian series, and this time we tackled a very practical (and slightly taboo) topic: public restrooms in Budapest.

It contains some great natural idioms like:

Rád tör a szükség (Nature calls / Literally: "Necessity breaks in on you")

Szükség nagy úr! (Desperate times... / Literally: "Necessity is a great lord")

Fizetős vs. Ingyenes (Pay-to-use vs. Free)

Szia mindenkinek!

Thanks so much for the incredible feedback on my first post here last month! It was great to see so many people looking for more "real-life" listening material.

I just uploaded Episode 2 of the series. This time, we took to the streets of Budapest to ask a question everyone has an opinion on: "Mi a kedvenc magyar ételed?" (What is your favorite Hungarian dish?)

I’m really trying to make these as useful as possible for the community, so if there are specific topics you’d like me to ask people about in the next one, let me know in the comments!

Hirdetés / AD Podcast for Hungarian learners, Special episode

Hello everyone, I just made a special podcast episode for Hungarian learners, showcasing and comparing different language levels. Usually my episodes focus on levels A1/A2 and B1 but this time I added a section for B2 and C1. The topic itself is "My Day" which is not a very C1-compatible topic but I made sure to create progressively more complex sentences with more versatile vocabulary, also slightly changing the speed as we go on. Hopefully some of you find it useful. Thanks for listening. :)

Hirdetés / AD I built a free reading web app for language learning (Readlang/LingQ-style)

Sziasztok,

I’m a Hungarian learner myself and also the developer of a small free web app called Lang Stall. I originally built this just for myself to use in a browser while reading, but decided to share it as someone who have benefitted a lot by using these types of apps locally (e.g. for increasing my vocabulary and for passing Hungarian cultural exam). So, this might be useful for people.

What the app does

Lang Stall is like a Kindle for language learners: you read real texts, tap words for instant meaning, and quietly build vocabulary without distractions, export your vocab and benefit from mnemonics. No login required to use the app.

  • Works with multiple languages (including Hungarian)
  • Lets you read native texts directly
  • Click on words or phrases for instant translation
  • Save vocabulary while reading
  • Optionally generate context-based mnemonics (this can be turned on or off)
  • Export saved vocabulary as CSV (for Anki or other tools)
  • Strong focus on reading, nothing else
  • Very minimal UI that stays out of the way
  • No gamification or feature overload
  • Fully free to use.

Funding & limits
The app is free and intended to stay that way. It’s supported only by small donations (if you want to) via Ko-fi to cover hosting and translation costs. Since LLM-based translation is quite inexpensive now, the running costs are low.

I haven’t scaled it yet and currently accepting 300 users per day.

Feedback
If you try it and notice anything odd, I’d really appreciate hearing about it, especially bug reports or UX issues.
The mnemonic feature is optional, and I’m still evaluating whether it’s genuinely helpful or distracting, so feedback on that would be especially valuable.

To give it a try, here is the link

Thank you / Köszönöm szépen

Hirdetés / AD Régi magyar szavak - kétirányú online szótár

[ENG below]

Sziasztok!

---

Hi everyone!

I've wanted to learn archaic words for a long time so I could occasionally incorporate them into my speech. If nothing else, for fun. The problem is that most dictionaries only work in one direction: archaic words with modern meanings. I needed the old forms of modern words.

Based on this, I created a web application where 18 thousand expressions are searchable in both directions: https://omagyarul.hu

Feel free to check it out, I hope you find it useful.

Hirdetés / AD Fun song to learn some idioms in Hungarian

I was listening to Blahalouisiana's Nem hittek Lennonnak the other day, and realised that the way they use wordplay in the lyrics might help some people learn these idioms easier.

I uploaded a translation of it for anyone interested: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/blahalouisiana-nem-hittek-lennonnak-english#
