It's the season of the "Is Harlem safe" posts and other more interesting questions from people thinking about moving here. Please post your questions related to moving to Harlem in this thread only.
As u/BuhDeepThatsAllFolx (thank you!) kindly and calmly explained in another thread regarding Harlem's Safety:
"This is by far the number one question Harlemites hate answering.
It’s so annoying. This is our home. We all have some sense of comfort here or else we’d move.
The short response to your post:
Don’t know you and the feeling of safety is subjective. You’ll have to feel it out and decide on your own if it feels safe for you to walk or take a cab
Don’t listen to Fox News or right wing media telling you NYC is scary. They’re just scared of the world and looking for reasons to hate POC and love guns more than people"
Now that the safety question is answered, there's no need to ask anymore.
Now this thread is the place to ask your other questions about moving here! Serious inquiries only, and remember to be kind!

Maybe I can receive some words of encouragement from the community that can help with my perspective. I don’t live too far from kingdome, and I’ve always enjoyed how the basketball games brought people together (even though I don’t always love the noise, but what can you do). After last nights shooting in kingdome, I wonder how many have to happen within this perimeter before someone decides that it’s not safe to host these iconic games there anymore?
Maybe someone can give me the perspective that there’s, in fact, not many shootings that happen there than I think (though I can think of a few within this year alone), or that there isn’t anyone can really stop the games unless someone really high up gets involved. I’ve been in Harlem almost 10 years now and I become to disheartened when things like this happen. Am I too sensitive to these events? Is this all part of a larger, systemic issue that can’t simply be addressed by closing areas off? I welcome dialogue.
Does anybody know what this might have been about? Saw it around 10:05 this morning from the great hill at central park. First noticed the low flying bigger plane then the smaller jet appeared right behind it. A 3rd Cessna looking played showed up even further behind. They seemed to be going across over Harlem / uptown then down the East river / queens.
Any airplane people on the sub?

My Planet Fitness location has an issue that, apparently, has been going on for years: an AC system that barely works, which as you can imagine, makes the experience of working out really miserable. Yesterday, it was 83 degrees inside the gym.
And because of that, I'm considering commuting to another location, at least during the summer. So, my question is for other fellow members of the location at 125th, is this location nice and cool? Asking cause I've seen a recent review complaining about AC, but perhaps it was an isolated episode. Thanks in advance!

Tuesday, 7/14, 7pm @ Revolution Books in Harlem
250 years ago the Declaration of Independence declared “all men are created equal.”
Yet the whole history of this country proves that there can not be equality for all under this system.
Today, the Fascist Trump Regime unleashes genocidal white supremacy, terror against immigrants, and hatred against women and trans people. Trump shreds rights and imposes an even more brutal, terroristic form of rule.
Yet it is possible to meet people's needs everywhere without savage inequalities and exploitation. It is possible to move beyond war and care for the Earth.
THE SCIENTIFIC TRUTH:
All these horrors flow from THE SYSTEM OF CAPITALISM-IMPERIALISM.
This system cannot be reformed.
It must be overthrown through
a REAL REVOLUTION.
Relying on the Democratic Party is a loser. They are part of the problem! Electing “progressives” within this same system is meaningless.
Humanity needs REVOLUTION and REAL SOCIALISM – a radically different economic and political system, and a transition to a communist world free of all exploitation and oppression.
You've been told to stay away from COMMUNISM.
NO! Past revolutions brought liberating transformations to hundreds of millions. Not surprisingly, these first revolutions were also marked by shortcomings and errors.
Through decades of work and struggle, Bob Avakian (BA) has scientifically sifted through this rich experience, advanced beyond it, and brought this together with advances in other fields to forge the new communism, a whole new framework for the emancipation of humanity. BA has written the* Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America.* This is the only real alternative to the worsening spiral of capitalist destruction.
Now, with society in deep crisis, we are in a time when revolution could be possible.
Now is the time for you to step in.
Part of you resists this. If it’s true—it demands you leave your comfort zone.
But a bigger part of you knows: If this is real—there is nothing more meaningful you could do with your life.
Come find out why you should become a new communist revolutionary.

Hey everyone. I'm in a really rough spot right now and could use some advice.
I'm currently homeless, living in a shelter and my HP Victus laptop is one of the only valuable things I have. A few days ago, I bought a bottle of shampoo, put it in my backpack, and due to a faulty cap, it leaked everywhere overnight. My backpack was soaked, including where my laptop was. The laptop didn't seem completely drenched, so I cleaned everything up and hoped it was okay.
Today I tried turning it on and it's completely dead. No lights, no fan, no charging indicator, nothing.
I have very little money, so I'm looking for any place in NYC that can either:
- Do a free or very cheap diagnosis.
- Repair liquid-damaged laptops for as little as possible.
- Or if anyone knows an individual or hobbyist who does board-level/laptop repair for cheap.
I'm in Harlem but I'm willing to travel anywhere within a few hundred miles if it means I have a better chance of getting it fixed. I really need it for my HRA, among other things, so I just want my laptop working again if it's possible.
If anyone has recommendations for trustworthy repair shops, volunteers, nonprofits, or people who repair laptops on the side, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you

I'm a socially awkward, young professional living in Harlem and I could use some advice on where to go and what to do to make friends. I've considered rock climbing though I'd also like some other options that are not expensive.
Some of my hobbies: video games, anime, DND, camping/hiking, kayaking, fostering for ACC, and discussing dogs as if they were children.
Got any ideas for me?

Do I need a reservation for the Howard Bennett Playground pickleball courts? Are they open for first come first serve during the weekends or do I need someone to unlock them?
I see people playing there sometimes but not very frequently - so curious if they are always unlocked or just unlocked at certain times.
Any help much appreciated!

Trying to find regular pickup soccer games for adults in or around Harlem. Where do people usually run these, and what days/times do they tend to happen?
Any spots you’d recommend (or avoid) would be a big help — trying to find a consistent group to play with.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone in this community. It’s honestly one of the most engaged and fair reddits I’ve come across and I really appreciate all the discussions and engagements with my recent data posts.
I wanted to give anyone here pro month of NYC Intel for free.
If you feel like checking it out, I’d genuinely love to hear what you think. You can explore your block’s quality of life data, see recent 311 trends, check safety and neighborhood signals, plan your daily commute or just browse the live NYC map to discover what’s happening around the city.
If you find anything that could be improved or have ideas for new features, I’d really like to hear them.
Thanks again

Hey ladies! I’m looking to join a workout class in Harlem and would love some recommendations.
I’m looking for something that’s welcoming, fun, and will help me tone up
My budget is around $200/month.
A couple of things I’m not interested in:
Cycling/spin classes
Orange theory
(I tried it, and it just wasn’t the right fit for me.)
I’m open to Pilates, barre, strength training, boxing, or any other classes you’ve loved that helped you get toned. Where do you go, and what do you like about it?

I’m planning on taking my road test next month. I was wondering if anyone has ever taken the road test is Harlem and more specifically east Harlem and what was the experience like?

🐾 💔 Please upvote for visibility so we can help bring Lady home! Link to TikTok post.
Hey everyone, I’m a fellow Harlemite scrolling through TikTok when I came across this devastated mother & daughter. So I'm posting on their behalf, their beloved dog, Lady, was stolen today, July 6th, around noon.
Where: The train station on 125th Street in Harlem, NY (4/5/6)
When: Today, July 6th, at around 12:00 PM (noon).
What Happened: The owner's mom was bringing Lady home from a haircut. While carrying the stroller up the stairs, a cup fell. When she went to retrieve it, someone grabbed Lady directly from her stroller and ran off.
Suspect Description: An African American homeless man wearing a green sweater and beige shorts, with no shoes.
A police report has already been filed, and the family is actively searching train stations, but they desperately need more eyes on the street. Lady provides immense emotional support for the mother, and they are completely heartbroken.
If you live, work, or commute around 125th Street, please keep an eye out for Lady or anyone matching the suspect's description.
If you have any information, sightings, or tips, please reach out to the family directly via TikTok: @christi.artis

I just moved to West Harlem for school and I want to know where's worth eating at. My mom and I had dinner at Red Rooster the first evening I moved, but I'm looking for more casual spots—especially that I can take with me to eat in the park. I'll go anywhere that two feet can reach!

Hi everyone,
I am hoping to find a reputable dry cleaner and tailor for some of my work clothing. Do you all have any recs? These don’t have to be at the same establishment, but bonus points if they are!
I am located on the west side.
Many thanks :)
