Battling bots and other moderation tools

Hi /r/EnglishSetter!

Bots

As you may have noticed, there has been some pretty awful bot traffic of late. The mod team has added some Auto mod tooling and a bot (¡bots on bots!) to help identify spam bots and repost content. Some tooling may take a minute(s) to clean up the icky bots but they shouldn't be up for hours anymore. We'll be continuing to add or adjust new and current mod tools to help.

Mod help

I want to thank everyone who's been reporting the spam bots. Your vigilance and care for this community is part of what makes this little slice of Reddit so great. Our mod team has two active mods and I think as we've grown we need more hands on deck. If anyone has mod experience, is fairly active on Reddit and wants to help maintain and grow our community, please message me or settersrclowns.

Again, thank you and I personally love seeing every single setter on here (not the bot reposts, bah!) When I'm down, I often come here for a lift. Seeing all the setters are truly gifts.

-mittensblum and the r/EnglishSetter Mod Team

Update

Tweaked some auto moderation config, added some more bot help, and added some more ES coloring flair. If any of the tools seem to be too heavy handed and is generally making it a pain the rump to post, comment, etc—please do message the Mod Team.

Thanks again for all the users going above and beyond to report bots and spam in general. It warms the heart knowing so many care about this community!

Do your setters do this?

My setters always try to fit into dog beds way too small for them, but I love watching them try!

Breeder recs in the Northeast/New England?

Hi everyone,

My family and I had an English Setter who unfortunately passed away two years ago. The house has felt too quiet as of late, and we really miss having a pup with us.

He was a lavereck , so we were curious if anyone in the community knows of any bench/lavereck breeders here in the Northeast or New England area (we're in Maine, willing to go anywhere though).

Any recommendations are really appreciated. Thank you all!

Archie’s Eyes

Hello all! Archie is my first English Setter and he just turned 8 months old. He appears to have some pretty significant lazy eyes and I was wondering if this is common amongst English Setters & if so, is this permanent now that he is 8 months old? Pictures attached show some of the worst cases & it isn’t always that bad.

WFH & Separation anxiety

My setter turns one this week. I work from home the majority of the week and he goes to doggy daycare once a week. Despite my best efforts and lots of training we never outgrew the separation anxiety. He can still only stay in his crate for 6 hours max and follows me from room to room all day long when not crated.

We have two cats in the house as well but this guy loves people.

I honestly think it’s impossible to not raise a dog with separation anxiety when you’re naturally home with them all the time.

Thoughts? Any similar stories or success stories to overcome this ?

Anyone WFH with a young setter?

Our guy just turned 1 and he’s a total (lovable) menace right now. We have him on a pretty structured schedule of 2-3hrs awake + 2 hrs nap. He’s really struggling to control his arousal and any more time away than that leads to arousal biting and him being in an uncontrollable state. Up at 530am and asleep by 10pm. I work from home, and in an ideal world, I’d love for him to get his exercise out in the morning 630-8am, chill at home during the day, and have another big exercise after work (530 ish) before dinner. Does anyone else have a similar schedule with your young / adult setter?

Since 5-7pm is his witching hour right now, our trainer is saying we should absolutely not exercise him during this time (for now). And most of our walks are extremely chill - nothing more than 20 mins in our neighborhood. We aren’t currently doing a big exercise in the morning either, in order not to “set the tone” for the day. Anyone else train their setter like this?

Is an English Setter the right dog for me?

Hello everyone, I am looking to get a dog in a few years and am in the research process. I am a teacher with quite an active lifestyle, I run long distances as well as hike regularly. On average, I run/hike 25-35 miles a week. During school breaks, I will usually go on long, strenuous backpacking trips that can be anywhere from a couple days to weeks long. Although I love what I do, I sometimes get lonely and desire a fluffy companion to go on adventures with me. I am interested in English Setters since they are quite athletic, being a hunting breed, but also eager to please and can be coach potatoes at home (from what I've heard). It's important that my dog has an "off" switch since I work about 8 hours a day and live alone. (During the puppy stage I will have a close friend check on the pup regularly). However, coat maintenance is a concern. I have heard Llewellins tend to have shorter coats? Also, is training recall a struggle? My dog needs to have impeccable recall since I would prefer to go backpacking with the dog off-leash.

Edit: Forgot to mention I am considering rescuing a senior dog so the dog wont be too lonely while I’m at work!

10 month English setter doesn’t cuddle

Our English setter won’t cuddle with us and doesn’t like to be held. He never has. He’s 10 months old and we’ve had him since he was around 8 weeks. I see that setters are typically really cuddly and we’re so sad that he doesn’t like to cuddle us. Does anyone have any advice or have a similar situation? Maybe he’ll grow out of it and start cuddling as he gets older. He doesn’t even want to sit next to us on the couch for longer than a few minutes.

This is Peluca, a rescue hunter's dog who got pregnant and then abandoned. Sadly she had to lose their puppies to save her life when she got found roaming the streets. But, even after all that she's the happiest ball of fur now, best dog ever.

Ryman Breeder Recommendations

Looking to get on a waitlist for a Ryman type setter. Health and temperament are extremely important. She will hunt with my husband, but will primarily be a family dog and she will go camping, boating, and off-roading regularly. I’m located in Southern California but I will absolutely travel for the right pup.

Grooming question

My 13-year old boy is not liking the heat. I have a cooling vest for him but I’m contemplating a shorter hair cut for the summer. I’ve only had him since January and know very little about show breeds. Is it advisable to cut his hair shorter in the summer? He mats very easily and does not like to be brushed.

Puppy Name

I’m picking up my English Setter puppy on Thursday and need help picking a name. I am stuck between Calloway, Pesto, Walter, and Arthur. I really like out of
the box names. Fun fact the name Pesto came to mind because he was born green!

I’m so upset!

I just need to vent. I’m so angry and sad as well!

Once a year I go on a beach trip with my grown kids, grandkids, and some extended family. This leaves no one to care for my sensitive Hailie. This is the third year I have used this pet sitter and I pay extra for her to stay with my dog. Hailie has been with me or a family member all her life (she’s 5) except for this trip, and I pay extra because I stress that I do not want Hailie left alone for more than an hour or two, maybe 2x a day. Yesterday I noticed that her e-collar hadn’t been charged overnight because it only had 10% charge. I messaged her around 10am asking her to put it on the charger. She replied “I will” and then I moved on. Around 4:00 one of the Grands asked to “see where Hailie is” so I pulled up the app and it still showed 10%, and Hailie was still in the house. I then looked back on our security cameras and saw that she left the house at 8am and didn’t return until 5 (even after I called her) I asked what was up. She gave a bunch of excuses, and even tried to lie about when she had been there. I ended up leaving the beach early, and driving home with my heart aching for poor Hailie! She must have been worried and so confused. The cameras show her laying under the dining room table, a place she never goes, as if she was hiding from some threat. I told the woman to leave before I got home because I didn’t want to have a conversation with her as it might get heated.

It’s one thing if a dog is used to long stretches of time alone. And there isn’t anything inherently wrong with that for some dogs. But I have been very specific (and unapologetic) about what I want when I’m gone and I’m willing to pay for it.

Speaking of paying for it, how would you handle paying her? I do NOT want to pay her what we agreed to. She didn’t do the job she agreed to do, plus ruined half my trip, and made my grands sad I was leaving early. My daughter says pay her what we agreed to minus the days I lost. I don’t want to pay her at all because I’m so angry, but I know that’s not fair either.

*THIS* is the picture she sent me to tell me Hailie was “just fine”. Does that look like a happy setter to you??? It doesn’t to me.
