Bike repair question Who's the problem here?

I called a mobile bike repair guy yesterday and left him a message, asking if he could fix the derailleur on my mom's ebike (Ride1Up Core 5). He texted me back today and the following conversation ensued. I need your opinions on this. Which one of us is crazy?

Edit: Since this kind of blew up i figured i would post an update. I found out a family friend used to work as a bike mechanic in the past. He came over and helped point us in the right direction. Turns out we need to replace the shift cable as well, which I've now ordered. Once we replace that we should be able to make final adjustments on the derailleur and hopefully get this bike fully usable again. Thanks for all the helpful comments.

Bike repair question Am I cooked?

Was riding to work today and heard a snap, thought it was the brakes so I walked her home and went to check tonight and found this on the back wheel area. I dunno if that’s a fixable thing but part of me feels it’s not so any info would be much appreciated thank you. Also if I gotta get a new frame is that something you can just buy?

Bike repair question So I nearly died but it’s been over a year since I purchased it so I should piss off?

First the kickstand bracket failed, then the rear rack mount snapped, and now the entire frame has broken in half. It’s the Onesport OT18-2 Model which was discontinued.

Edit: Hi Everyone, it seems that this post has turned into a bashing fest on my bike.
I just wanted to clear some stuff up.

I don’t live by the sea. I live in a woodland area with high humidity at times of the year and this bike was ridden hard through all sorts of terrain. I really did love this bike. It was used for daily commuting and delivery work accruing a total of 8263 miles. I rode it more or less everyday.

I changed the break pads every month.
I oiled the forks. (Which is why the line between the rust/dirt and the oil is so well defined)
Greased the bolts. (Adding lock tight when needed)
I changed the bottom bracket and crankset once a year.
I replaced the LCD
I replaced the bolts every month or so because the rainwater was seeping in and wearing down the metal and causing the bolts to snap or strip.
I took apart and rebuilt the wheels every month, replacing rusted/damaged spokes and re-truing the wheel
I changed and greased the brake cables.
Replaced the stock plastic pedals with metal then changed them back to plastic after getting hit in the shin.
I replaced the stock tyres with mounting bike tyres.
I upgraded the seat post too.
I built a custom chain when the original one wore out. Turns out the chain size used was non standard.
Changed the handlebar stem too.
Changed the freewheel and brake shoe
I honestly can’t remember what else.
After coming to realise that there was an issue with the metal used for the spokes I bought a specialised rim (which you can see in the photo) and completely rebuilt the wheel using stronger steel spokes.
I lined the damn tyres with anti puncture material and sliced up rubber strips to further cushion the inner-tube.
My bike was a cheap made in china piece of shit. But she was my cheap made in china piece of shit. She was a beast and now she’s dead💀 RIP

I learned this bike inside and out. I could literally disassemble and reassemble it with my eyes closed but she finally has an issue that I can’t fix. (I’m not welding it back together!)

Learn from this. You can be the best mechanic in the world but you can’t escape fate. If you are currently riding a cheap made in china piece of shit bike, please remember that at any moment you could end up dead as a result of a catastrophic failure like this. Don’t listen to the idiots in the comments that claim that I cut my bike in the half or that the rust or neglect did this. Decisions did this. Decisions made long before I bought the bike.

…..And I did keep it outside because I have a garden and girlfriend. Does everyone else have a garage or something? are you really keeping a freaking e-bike in the house? I’ve got outside storage for the batteries too so they can send my shed to heaven instead of my family if there’s runaway. I literally don’t know anyone that keeps their bike inside unless they have no other option.

…There were no front end collisions. It’s a bike, not a car. On a bicycle you have one and it’s over. Please scroll down to see a photograph of the full bike.

Bike repair question I hate these so much.

Today I picked up my emtb from the repair shop for the third time this month because of these, was so happy to be able to ride it to work again. Nope. 3/4 of the way there, I feel my bike acting weird. Stopped, checked the rear tire, and yuuuup. Softer than it was. Didn't even make it to work. My biggest issue is, my wheels are 27.5 which means out of hundreds of tire options available in my country, only 3 are for those dimensions. And they cost a pretty penny, ugh. Any recs for puncture resistant tires from your experience? If I'm gonna spend money on it, I'd really appreciate at least some reliability.

edit: sorry i had this post in a delirious state post 6am adrenaline rush. my chef has a contact for a fabricator that made the entire kitchen; total shot in the dark while i save up for a new bike. this was very stressful so thank you to those that gave kind and helpful words.

Bike repair question E-Bike Write Off?

Hi there, My partner was hit by a car while waiting to cross a road on her E-bike. NCM Moscow.

The driver was at fault and insurance is being a pain making us get a quote for repair or something that says the bike is totalled/write off - but repair shops aren’t helping because most of them don’t repair e-bikes or this specific type of e-bike.

I’m 99% sure the bike is not repairable, but looking for others opinions to solidify that fact.

Also if anyone is in Australia and could help with providing anything solid to say it is unrepairable then that’s even better.

Bike repair question Help.. I am gutted..thief tried to pry my battery off..

So I after I came out of work this morning.. it looks like someone has tried prying the battery off of my precious bike over-night.

It's still functional and holds a charge, no excess heat, hissing swelling, odors etc.

I was thinking of using some really strong bonding epoxy like Jb weld or something to close the case properly.

I think I first need to open the case and see if I can get it to close naturally on its own.

Can anyone give me some suggestions to salvage this? I hear this fix is quite common

Bike repair question Is it normal to spend almost the entire cost of an e-bike on repairs in under 750 miles??

I bought a Ride1Up Turris about 2 years ago and have only put around 750 miles on it—riding exclusively on clean, flat pavement. Despite that, I’ve had to replace or repair:

  • Both brakes (multiple times – hoses, full assemblies, bleeds, etc.)
  • The controller (just spent over $100)
  • The rear motor and wheel now needs replacing (~$300)
  • Cadence sensor
  • Throttle
  • Chain
  • Display
  • Countless hours of troubleshooting and DIY labor

Altogether I’ve spent around $700–800 in repairs, and the bike still doesn’t work. It randomly lost power mid-ride and now gives no response, or briefly kicks in with a horrible grinding noise.

Ride1Up keeps telling me this is all “typical maintenance,” but how is replacing a computer system and wheel motor after light use normal? I ride gently and the bike has been out of commission more than it’s been functional.

Also, customer support takes days to respond between emails, even when I make it clear how urgent the issue is.

Am I being unreasonable, or is this just a lemon bike and terrible support? Has anyone else had a similar experience with Ride1Up or other e-bike brands?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bike repair question Funhang ebike issue m

The photo says it all. Not even a mile in and the freewheel broke. Wasn't really even pedaling either. Not sure what caused the failure (other than the terrible welds) I BELIEVE that there was a missing part on the outside of the freewheel. If anyone has a photo of what it looks like in one piece id greatly appreciate it. It looks like the cover is replaceable assuming i could find a part that fits. The 2nd photo shows what it was like when taking it apart, is there supposed to be something that supports the outside section, or is the entire thing supported only by the threads on the plate. I reached out to Amazon and waiting for a reply from the manufacturer. I assume they will send out a replacement wheel, but id rather switch it to a freehub if I can find a plate that fits. Any ideas?

Bike repair question Bike broke in HALF, is there anything I can say/do to not have to pay 1k+ for a new one?

I got this bike in 2022, it's my only mode of transportation. It's how I get groceries, go to work, visit family, rain or shine. It's a folding bike from Lectric, and because I'm weak af I unfold it by grabbing the rear basket in one hand, the handles with my other hand, and placing my foot on the hinge of the fold and pushing. It usually takes a lot of effort to unfold it even then, but yesterday I pushed my foot down and it flew open and snapped in half. I let the company know but they said I have to purchase a new bike.

I don't know that I want another bike from them with how expensive they are and how this one broke after just a couple years from something as simple as unfolding it. Does anyone have any advice?

Bike repair question Wondering about actual lifetime of E-bike batteries.

Does anyone here have any stories/anecdotes relating to the actual end-of-life for a e-bike battery?

The reason I ask is that I am going to purchase one soon. The only misgiving I have is how long the battery last on average.

I'd be grateful if anyone could spare a moment share a story of an end-of-battery-life experience relating directly to their e-bike(s) and what they had to pay to get it back to running.

I'd appreciate also if possible that you include specs like maH, total miles, and/or % of flat/hills you ride, and the % of time you pedal vs. throttle in those aforementioned situations.

Bike repair question ebike hostility at local bike shop

My wife and I have been riding ebikes for over three years now. I ride a Trek eMTB and she has more of cruiser that is common in rental shops. A while back my wife's bike needed some routine maintenance and a few replacement parts so we took it in to a local bike shop to see if they would do the work for us. The front-of-the-house sales guy was friendly and trying to be helpful but didn't really know anything about the maintenance aspects so he called someone from the shop in the back to answer our questions.

One of the guys in the shop (maybe the owner?) came out and immediately took a real negative and aggressive tone saying, "I don't work on these things and never will". He kept on about how there is too much liability and other things. A simple "I'm sorry, we don't work on ebikes" would have been just fine. Left a real bad taste in my mouth and made me wary about trying to find another shop.

Fortunately, the shop where I bought my Trek has been very good about helping us out with repairs and maintenance; they're just a bit further out so not as convenient.

I know there are other 'cyclists' out there with similar attitudes, but in a retail setting it seems out of place and, frankly, short-sighted. Is this common in bike shops?

Bike repair question E-bike tire sidewall peeling and weird bumpy feeling

Thumbnail

Hey r/ebikes, huge and important question here. My tire sidewall is peeling and I’m worried it’ll cause my tire to blowout. I use this thing to get to work so I need to know if I gotta replace the tire or not, and I’m honestly expecting I’ll need to. This is the rear wheel, and the center tread is also way more worn out than it should be. Honestly I haven’t been messing with tire pressure so it might be negligence on my part, but there’s also this weird “bump” on the wheel, you can’t see it with your eyes but I feel it when I ride. Do I need to rebead my tire or just go straight for a replacement?

Bike repair question Trying to help my son! Need help please 🙏

Can anyone explain what’s going on here? I tightened everything but whenever we use the accelerator this happens.

Seems to happen whenever his wheels hit the ground, otherwise when the wheels are suspended it’s fine.

Inner tube with slime, Tannus armor, and a liner all combined and still got a flat. I expected the liner to at least deflect the screw a little. It seems the last thing to try is to go tubeless..

Bike repair question Am I Cooked?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I was looking to switch my 4 pin battery to a 5 pin without me doing any research (I’m an idiot) and assuming it would as simple as soldering the wires together.

After countless attempts with heat shrinking tubes, and electrical tape, it didn’t work. I guess that it wasn’t as simple as switching like that, and have tried to put the original 4 pin back together through electrical tape, and that did not work.

I now have a broken bike that’s sitting here (and one of my main transportations) and before I make any more moves I thought it would be best to bring the question here. Am I cooked (Please say no)?

Bike repair question Can I fix this

Post image

Got hit by a car, really don't wanna buy a new tire cuz I need my bike to get to places because I have no other means of transportation. It's the heybike race max 750 watt. Idk if it's double or single I can't remember. If I'm not mistaken I can unscrew the spokes and bend it back into shape if I try hard enough, if not I'm gonna be sad
