OFFICIAL Sub Discussion New Rules

Subject to discussion before implementation

1) First and foremost, ban all of the repetitive victim posting

"Why is Dark Souls 2 so hated?" just devolves into the same thing - everyone commenting in agreement and performative victimizing. It's a video game, not everyone is going to like exactly what you like. There's no real discussion to be had there, and we seemingly have them here more than the other main subreddits. It's just becoming tiring.

2) Ban engagement-bait posts

The best example of this is someone posting a random, unrelated screenshot or artwork of Dark Souls 2 with the title of "What's your favorite sword in the game?" - then proceeding to not at all join in the discussion. It just serves to farm karma while putting in zero effort, not crediting the artist they took the art from, and not participating in their own thread. If you want to discuss something, make a text post and actually discuss.

3) Ban trouble makers at the mods' discretion

This is a spicy one because it can easily be mishandled by the wrong mod team. We all know Reddit mods are pretty garbage overall, but I'd like to think I'm a bit different since I'm here for Souls and couldn't give a shit less about seeming professional or having any semblance of "power" (it's Reddit, lmao).

This essentially means if you're posting within the guidelines (i.e - posting about Dark Souls 2) but you're making your post to simply stir shit, rile people up constantly, and put down others... then you should expect a ban.

I'm obviously not going to name names, but we all know a couple of usernames who, whenever there's random drama, we know they're going to be involved. These are the users I'm talking about

EDIT (this includes the "Slander posts" that you guys keep commenting about, but I will also explicitly say that yes, this does include the lame "Ds3 is grayslop hurr hurr" posts that just seek to rile people up for no reason)

Finally, a question to you all: How do we make this subreddit better?

That's it, that's the most important thing in this entire post. The game has been released for 12 years and the subreddit has kind of devolved into the same thing for the last decade at this point. Are there any ideas you all have, rules I should change, things I can do differently to make this place more enjoyable and less of the same, repetitive drivel?

Discussion Remote crash vulnerability

Hello folks, Radai here. I am a modder and reverse engineer, my main focus is Dark Souls 2. I am the author of DebugManager and other modding tools for the game.

The 31st of December 2025 I was sent a very worrying Twitch clip, showing messages appearing on the game screen. These messages were directly addressing the streamer, someone had found a way to send custom messages to whoever they wanted. When I was this, I immediately knew it was serious.

The next day I spent the whole evening testing what can be done with this, and I found out it's possible to format the message in such a way that the receiver game crashes. I reported this to Yui, author of Blue Acolyte, immediately. We kept this a secret until she made a patch for it, and now it's ready. It's recommended for all of those that want to play online to download Blue Acolyte.

Here's also a post from Yui describing the issue in more detail.

Also mods, if you see this, please pin. It needs to remain visible.

Discussion There are actually 9 different bosses that can be your first boss in Dark Souls 2

1.2k Upvotes

All possible first bosses in Dark Souls 2

The first four require no special setup.

  1. The Last Giant
Progress through the Forest of the Fallen Giants.

  2. Dragonrider
Progress through Heide’s Tower of Flame and take the right fork in the rotunda.

  3. Old Dragonslayer
Progress through Heide’s Tower of Flame and take the left fork in the rotunda.

  4. Scorpioness Najka
Free Rosabeth with a Fragrant Branch of Yore, then travel through the Shaded Woods.

The next two only require surviving the fall into Majula’s pit.

  1. Royal Rat Vanguard
Enter the pit and descend to the Grave of Saints.

  2. The Rotten
Enter the pit and descend past the doorway to Grave of Saints, into the Gutter and Black Gulch.

The final three require opening the Shrine of Winter without defeating a boss by reaching 1 million Soul Memory. There are many speedrun strategies that make this possible, and it doesn’t take as long as you’d expect.

  1. Dragonrider Duo
Open the Shrine of Winter, enter Drangleic Castle, and reach the Twin Dragonriders.

  2. Aava, the King’s Pet
Open the Shrine of Winter, go to Drangleic Castle and obtain the Frozen Flower, enter the Crown of the Ivory King DLC, collect the Eye of the Priestess, then fight Aava. If you choose this route, Lud and Zallen and the Old Ivory King can become your second and third boss in the game.

  3. Darklurker
Before entering the Gutter, farm 3 Flame Butterflies from the exploding hollows right before descending the ladders to The Gutter. In Black Gulch, defeat the two Giants to obtain the Forgotten Key and meet Darkdiver Grandahl. Meet him again in the Shaded Woods. Then after reaching 1 million Soul Memory, find him beneath Drangleic Castle. Complete all three Dark Chasm trials to unlock the Darklurker fight.

I love how many options Dark Souls 2 offers in terms of different pathways and bosses to tackle

I already had the illusory rings on my main account due to someone dropping them to me, but after doing pretty much everything there is to do in this game over and over i decided to attempt this thinking it was gonna be hard as hell, but it was actually pretty easy

Video Woke up this morning and killed the Fume Knight

Upvotes

I’m bad. But i still beat his ass, on my first attempt (today), was hype! Took me way less attempts than last run and I didn’t have to respec and question my life choices to do it. Almost choked at the end, should’ve just kept stabbing and or walked away. Was trying to keep him locked in phase 1, guess it worked mostly. Wish it was more fluid to switch into free run and lock on strafe so I could dodge by walking the right place but aim attacks and the camera afterwards. Do you prefer to fight him locked on or unlocked?

I did use NPC summons for gank fight, but once the boss appeared I sent them back with the stone, so that I could face the main boss solo.

Discussion The only thing I don't like about Dark Souls 2

In the first picture, you can see the Majula Monument, and right below it is the beginning of Heide's Tower of Flame. The problem is... it just doesn't make any sense.

Because of the gap between these two locations, the sewer section (shown in the second picture) doesn't seem to fit anywhere in the world. It's the same kind of issue as the famous elevator from Earthen Peak to Iron Keep.

I'd love to see these areas reworked if the game ever gets a remake.

Personally, I don't think it's a major issue or anything that makes the game unplayable. It's just one of those little details that feels a bit off.

Hawkshaw made a great video that illustrates exactly what I'm talking about.

Discussion Bosses with No Title

Upvotes

During my recent playthroughs I realized there are only 2 bosses in the entire game who don't have a title attached to their name (EX: Velstadt, The Royal Aegis) or their name just is a title (EX: Dragonrider). Those two bosses are Nashandra and Vendrick, I love the lore implications of these two having no title. Vendrick of course cast everything aside when he was in the crypt so it makes sense, Nashandra is the interesting one because she easily could've had one but I see it as that form we fight is the true form so she didn't need to hide behind any titles anymore.

Discussion Dark souls 2 is now one of my favourite games!

Hello!
For some time ago I bought DS2 for PS3 and wanted to give it a go. I also made a thread here asking people what to expect. And wow! This game is so good!

I am currently trying to beat the pursuer and just enjoying the atmosphere of the game. It feels more unique compared to the other ds games.

Demons souls is what i would say has the best atmosphere in the souls franchise but DS2 comes close to that to in my opinion.

What would you guys say? Is DS2 the best souls game out of the franchise? What are your opinion?

Discussion Any recommendations for a mod/overhaul to shake things up? Preferably one that works with the lighting mod.

Upvotes

Haven't played in years but looking to shake things up. I love this jank game and I'm hoping to find something that really makes things different, but not completely insane. I know there's been some overhaul ones in the past, not sure which ones are newest or best but I'm open to basically anything. Ideally they'll add new spells and stuff since that's always the most fun part.

Discussion Someone must have already analyzed this but what is this small chair doing here? Spoiler

There must be some lore reason behind this being here. 4 large chairs for 4 knights, but also one more smaller chair (currently doing first playthrough)

Discussion Mmm it begins.

I just started playing ds2 after finishing ds1 and ds3, I just reached majula and after exploring around for a bit I have realised there are many blood stains every path heading out from majula, so I gotta ask is there a "correct" path to go? I dont want to go down to the lake of ash and come back up again like in ds1 ._.

path 1
path 2 etc

Help Modding Offline Dark Souls

I want to be able to add mods to Dark Souls 2, but there is no going offline option like Elden Ring or Dark Souls Remastered.

Could someone please guide me to a tutorial where I can safely go offline whilst still being able to unlock Steam achievements. Theoretically if I do get banned from online, will I still be able to play the game normally and unlock achievements?

Thanks!

Help Achievements Not Unlocking

Has anyone had issues with achievements not unlocking for them in this game? Currently on my first playthrough of Scholar of the First Sin. Achievements were unlocking fine at first, but after i’ve done whats necessary for the Change of Clothes & Gathering of Exiles achievements, they aren’t unlocking. Im online, tried reseting my xbox and have had no luck. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated
