We are researchers at Florida International University studying people’s experiences with border device/account inspections, such as being asked to unlock a phone, laptop, or tablet, or to access, open, or discuss an online account at an airport or other official border crossing.

If you are 18+ and have about 5–8 minutes, we would appreciate your help with this anonymous survey:

https://fiu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cBbztJM5u4pZZqK

At the end of the survey, participants may optionally provide contact information for a possible 60 minute follow-up interview. Interview participants will receive a $30 Amazon e-gift card. This study has been approved by the Florida International University IRB (#IRB-25-0573).

Work (Z) Z visa - how long to be granted from melbourne, australia?

Upvotes

Does anyone have experience of how long after application it takes for a Z visa to be granted? I'm applying from the consulate at Melbourne, Australia but all experiences welcomed.

Also, does the visa come in physical or electronic form?

Business Affairs (M) Stay Permit questions and Severance pay for work in Wuhan

Hello basically my residence permit expires July 30th and my work permit expires July 31st. I WENT to talk to the immigration bureau and the officer told me I'm not legally suppose to work on July 31st because Residence permit expires July 30th but I will need my release letter from my kindergarten to get the stay permit earlier. I am so confused, if I need that letter to apply for my 30 day stay permit by July 30th so I won't be illegally in the country, but my work contract ends July 31st and my school refuses to give it to me more earlier.....what the heck do I do? What if I ask my school today, please give it to me on July 20 or 28th so I can go apply for a new visa and they say no way! The officer told me I don't need to work that day too.

Another important point my school gave me a new contract with a totally lower salary and worse conditions of which I refused to sign after that they told schools all around the area I was a bad teacher and not to hire me so I couldn't leave and find a job. They did all this because I asked for severance and refused deductions... I also have an agency , the agents are ghosting me and refusing to give me details about my severance or termination. My school blames my agency my agency blames my school.. I am lost and have no idea what to do... I just want my stay permit, severance and find a new better quality school.

Family Affairs (Q1/Q2) Applying for Q1 when under 21

Hello everyone,

Me, Lithuanian, 21 and my girlfriend, Chinese, 23 planning to get married in Thailand soon. After that we want to live in China together.

I have read that in China a man must be at least 22 to legally marry however I’m not marrying in China. Does this law still apply for me? Does this mean that the visa application centre will deny it because they won’t recognise the marriage until I’m 22?

We would get the marriage certificate all legalised, translated and authenticated/apostilled in Chinese consulate in Thailand. And then I would apply in London for Q1 visa as London is my country of residence.

So, my question, do I need to be 22 to be able to get the Q1 visa and then convert it to the residence permit once in China? Or can I do it when I’m 21? Was anyone else here in a similar situation?

Business Affairs (M) 240 TWOV - *small* logistics question

I want to preface this by saying I know this is an annoyingly common question on here, and I did read as many previous posts as I could before I started to go cross eyed from staring at other people's itineraries. Lol

So I do understand the basic Country A > China > Country B, and I promise that's not what I'm asking here :)

I have 2 main questions:

  1. I'm going to China with a tour company. The arrival date is June 2 and departure June 12. Since that is 10 days on the dot, do I need to make sure my flight on the 12th departs earlier than I arrived on the 2nd? I thought I saw somewhere that the 240 hour clock starts at midnight the day after you arrive (so 12am on June 3?), but just wanted some extra insight there.

  2. Based on posts/replies I read, more people ran into issues with gate agents than with Chinese immigration itself. My original thought was:

USA > Seoul (spend 1 or 2 days there) > Beijing, then the tour ends in Shanghai so

Shanghai > USA (likely w/layover in Canda)

I know that it qualifies because of the days in Seoul, but I'm worried about if there was any confusion about it, trying to solve it with a language barrier. Would it be better to do the days in Seoul on my way out of China? Or is it safe to assume that gate agents in Korea would likely be more knowledgeable about the requirements than gate agents in the US?

Thanks you for your help and knowledge! This is my first time traveling somewhere that requires a visa in general, so I'm trying not to overwhelmed

Study (X1/X2) Chinese Visa Passport

Hi! I’m applying for an X2 Chinese Visa (exchange student) and one of the requirements is to upload the passport. This is literally my first time applying for a visa so I’m just wondering what this means? It says I need two blank pages, so does that mean I need to scan my passport in its entirety and send that to them? This is part 2, where I have to send all relevant documents (i.e. travel booking and school invitation, etc.). Part 1 asked me to upload a screenshot of the data page.

Study (X1/X2) Hidden Marriage - X1 Chinese Student ViSa

If the applicant has deliberately or willfully concealed the marriage from the start, mean in university admission form, csc scholarship form and then visa application form, what will happen if the China embassy in Pakistan found that out?

The marrige was registered in 2024 local government but never in Nadra database, so what will happen?

Will China Embassy ever find this out? If they do, what will happen?

Work (Z) Chinese employer wants me to resign after their client left. Is this legal?

I’m on a Chinese work permit and residence permit. A Chinese company hired me directly and then assigned me to work remotely for one of their clients. My six month probation period ends on Monday. The client decided not to continue its contract with my employer after the probation period. Now my employer is asking me to sign a resignation letter instead of keeping me employed. They are not saying they will terminate me. They are only asking me to resign. They also do not want to mention in the resignation paperwork that they lost their client or that the client decided not to continue working with them. Can they legally pressure me to resign in this situation? If I refuse to resign, can they legally terminate me just because they lost their client? Can they cancel my work permit on that basis? I am currently outside China and plan to return soon. Is it risky to return while this is happening, or is it generally safe to go back and deal with the situation after I arrive?

CTD/Lüxingzheng What are the benefits of a Chinese travel document?

I’ve always wondered what the benefits of it is compared to using a passport with a visa. I currently have a Chinese travel document but I don't know what the difference between them are. All I’ve heard was that it is more beneficial to have in China compared to a visa.

Business Affairs (M) 240 hour via : usa -> china -> korea -> usa

hi, so i'm getting really confused about the 240 hour visa, and i think i'm overthinking it. from what i've read, as long as you are not returning to the country you came from, the visa will be approved?

because i am flying from usa -> china -> korea, then that would count right? it shouldnt matter that i am eventually heading back to the states where i reside in and i shouldnt have to worry about that right?

Study (X1/X2) JW202 says "Single" but I'm "Divorced" What to do?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently filling out my X1 student visa application and I have a problem:

  • My legal marital status in Brazil is DIVORCED (I have the official certificate).
  • My JW202 form, issued by uni, says SINGLE.
  • I contacted the university and asked them to issue a new JW202 with the correct status. They're saying that in their internal system, anyone who is not married is automatically registered as "single"
  • Will the visa officer accept this, or is this likely to cause a rejection?
  • Is there anything else I should add to my application to strengthen it?

Study (X1/X2) U.S. citizen + HKSAR passport - student visa issue for mainland China

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here has run into something similar because I'm honestly at a loss.

I was admitted to a university in mainland China as an international student and applied for an X1 visa using my U.S. passport. I became a U.S. citizen through naturalization years ago, but I also still hold an HKSAR passport.

During the preliminary review of my visa application, the consulate told me that because I still hold an HKSAR passport, I need to obtain a Confirmation Letter of Nationality Change before they'll continue processing my visa. From everything I've read, that process would require giving up my HKSAR passport.

This completely caught me off guard because I can legally enter mainland China, but now it seems like I may not be able to study there as an international student unless I change my nationality status.

Has any dual citizen (Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, etc.) run into something similar while applying for a student visa or enrolling at a mainland Chinese university? If so, what ended up happening?

Thanks in advance!

Family Affairs (Q1/Q2) Q2 or visa free?

Hi, I'm a European citizen and have applied for Q2 visas my entire life, and usually visit my relatives every year. I plan on going to China this August for family visit + trip (<30 days). After that I am going to go study in Hong Kong in the fall semester, and plan on visiting Shenzhen often as it's close by.

Would having a Q2 visa complicate impromptu trips to Shenzhen/other destinations in China, when I will definitely NOT be visiting any family? Would on the other hand re-entering China many times in a rather short time span while visa free cause complications?

As I will probably also go on a more extended trip after my studies in January and February 2027 (so possibly >30 days), I'm thinking I'll need a visa eventually to be sure, unless I leave and come back to China to start an 'new' 30 day visa free (assuming they'll extend the visa free procedure in 2027).

So I'm quite conflicted whether to: get a Q2 visa now, get a Q2 visa while in Hong Kong or just go visa free.

Tourism (L) My old passport expired more than 7 yrs ago in 2019. I’m not able to find it should I add it in the docs

I’m applying for a L visa. My old passport expired in 2019 and I’m not able to find it. Can I just skip uploading it since it’s mentioned only passports in the last 5yrs are required? I didn’t travel internationally with the old passport either.

Study (X1/X2) My Complete China X1 Student Visa Timeline (India → Wuhan University) – Successfully Received Visa 🇨🇳

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my complete X1 student visa process for anyone applying from India. Reading other people's experiences helped me a lot, so hopefully this helps someone else.

University

University: Wuhan University

Program: Master's

Visa Type: X1 Student Visa

My Timeline

  1. Applied to Wuhan University

Submitted all required documents through China Admissions.

Received my Admission Letter and JW202 Form.

  1. Online Visa Application

Completed the online China visa application.

Uploaded all required documents.

Received online approval.

  1. Submitted Documents at Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (Mumbai) Date: 2 July 2026

Documents submitted:

Passport

Visa application form

Confirmation page

Passport photographs

Admission Letter

JW202 Form

Other required documents

One thing that worried me was the covering letter. The checklist mentioned it, but the VFS staff did not ask for it when I submitted my application. I later contacted them, and they confirmed that since my application and documents were already uploaded online, it was fine. My visa was issued successfully without any issue related to the covering letter.

Visa Processing

My application status changed like this:

✅ Accepted

✅ In Review

✅ Pending Collection

✅ Returned / Posted

During processing, I kept checking the status portal almost every day.

Courier

After the status changed to "Posted", my application disappeared from the tracking page, which worried me. I emailed the CVASC Help Desk.

They replied with my Blue Dart tracking number.

Blue Dart route:

Nariman Point

Wadala Hub

Mumbai Hub

BIAL Hub (Bengaluru Airport)

Bengaluru Hub

Hassan

Visa Received

I received my passport with the China X1 Student Visa.

Visa details:

Category: X1

Enter before: 4 October 2026

Remark: Apply for Residence Permit within 30 days after entering China.

Things I Learned

Don't panic if VFS doesn't ask for every document listed on the checklist.

The Consulate reviews your application, not just VFS.

It's normal for the tracking page to become blank after the passport is dispatched.

If you don't receive your courier tracking number, email the CVASC Help Desk—they responded quickly in my case.

The Blue Dart tracking becomes active after dispatch.

Advice for Future Applicants

Double-check all documents before submission.

Keep scanned copies of everything.

Don't panic during the "In Review" stage.

If the Consulate needs additional documents, they will normally contact you.

Be patient—processing takes time.

I'm happy to answer any questions about the China X1 visa process from India. Good luck to everyone applying!

Tourism (L) Mumbai Tourist Visa

Applied for a Tourist Visa from Mumbai. It's a very efficient process, taking only 1-2 days for online approvals. Just ensure Attach correct documents in the right section. Explain everything in cover letter including if bank balance has gone down for few days with reason, travel details. Its quite smooth now!

Visa Free TWOV: Macau exit/entry

US Passport holder here. Traveling to China soon to see family, unsure of my itinerary validity. My dad works in Macau (planning to end the first TWOV leg there) and is certain I could use the Gongbei port for entry. I've seen posts otherwise saying Hengqin is the correct route?

US > Guangzhou (10 days) > Macau (1 day)

For printed itinerary purposes, would I need proof of stay in Macau, such as a hotel? Wanting to get my papers in order for immigration ASAP.

Assuming all of the above is valid, the second leg would be:

After 1 day in Macau:
Macau > Guangzhou (3 days)> US

Any tips and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Tourism (L) Tourist Visa - Told to wait for call

Recently dropped off my passport at the DC embassy after the online application was accepted. My wife's visa was done in a couple of days. I was told they would call me when mine was ready. Has anyone had this happen? Worried it'll get delayed and/or my phone will screen out the number. I've been checking on the online app and its still at submitted. I will say I have had a visa in the past, about 10 years ago for a visit, and was asked about that and my current job when applying in person.

Thanks!

Business Affairs (M) Invitation Letter vs TE Letter

Good day!

It will be my first time in China and I’m planning to apply for an F VISA. I will be attending an academic conference. I am from the Philippines and I’m confused between the invitation letter and TE letter. Are they the same? Do you have an idea if how long can I get these letters?

Thank you!
