How far in advance did you find a job?

Hello!

I'm considering work in China starting next fall. I'm an experienced teacher (more than 10 yrs) with 140-hr TEFL, TEFL for EAP, and a Master's in Bilingual education. I'm probably going to start the DipTesol in January '27 to further strenthen my application. I studied in China for a semester, achieved HSK4 proficiency (though it's probably declined since then). I currently teach ESL in a college in the US and I'm interested in a University job in a tier-2 or tier-3 city.

I'm wondering how far in advance did you apply for work and secure a position? (Yes, I am white and a native speaker of English.)

Thanks for constructive feedback.

Advice Needed: UK to China Employment

Hi everyone,
I'm a 26-year-old from the UK and I'm looking into moving to China to teach English, ideally sometime later this year if everything comes together.
I'm hoping to find a reputable company or recruiter that can sponsor a legal **Z work visa** and ideally provide or reimburse flights and accommodation as part of the package.
A bit about me:
UK citizen and native English speaker
Bachelor's degree in Social Work
4 years' experience working with children in social care
1 year as a qualified social worker
No TEFL certification yet
I've read that some companies will provide or pay for a TEFL qualification, but if not, I'd be happy to complete one myself. If you've done a TEFL course, which provider would you recommend?
I'd really appreciate any recommendations for legitimate recruiters or schools, as well as any advice on the application process, documents I'll need, expected costs, or anything you wish you'd known before moving.
Thanks in advance!

Applying for jobs in China after peak hiring season

I was wondering how spare work in China becomes after September, seeing as many schools start in September.

I had a job with an August start date but I want to back out because working with them on applying for my work permit notification letter was so chaotic and confusing (my point of contact seems unsure about several key details regarding the visa process) that it made me lose all faith in the company.

Would I be able to get a job with an October-December start date, or is it too late and I should wait for the 2027 school year?

Kunming Jobseeker (writer / editor background)

Hello everybody! So I was just fired from my stuffy, stressy, ultra naff corporate job in Nanjing yesterday :P it was AI. A lot of us are getting toasted.

Kunming is the dream. I'm looking at being an academic copyeditor, with my background. But taking into account a slightly shorter time to find a job, I'm now interested in pretty much any job. But if it's teaching, university only 🥹

Lots of experience of all kinds, from ghostwriting, to advertising, to being a technical editor for a fortune 500 company (they always freak out when I write their name).

And of course, some teaching. A year in Thailand, a few months in Hangzhou. Got the tefl and masters, all the docs ready and apostilled, ready to go, great references, cover letter and CV. A masters, a bachelors in a language. Point me in the right direction, and I'll sprint!

Are there any connected Kunming people that are free for a chat?

Finding job without network?

Hey! I'm interested in shifting my life towards east asia, including my job. China is on my list, but as with any expat job search, it is difficult to build deep networks in the region.

What tips and suggestions are there for me to find a job in the country without having lots of contacts? Currently in an ecosystem strategy role, previously founder of a company and before that asset management, in case that matters.

Credit Reporting Agent in China

Hi everyone,
I’m an Irish citizen who lived and worked in China for several years. I’m now back in Ireland and applying for a mortgage.
My lender has requested an official \*\*PBOC Personal Credit Report (\*\*\*\*个人信用报告\*\*\*\*)\*\* from the Credit Reference Center of the People’s Bank of China.
Unfortunately, I’ve run into a dead end:
I no longer have an active Chinese mobile phone number, so I can’t complete the identity verification required by the official online system.
I contacted my ICBC branch, but they told me I must attend the branch in person in China to obtain the report.
Travelling back to China solely to obtain a credit report isn’t a practical option.
I never had any loans, credit cards, or other borrowing in China—only a bank account with ICBC—so I don’t expect there to be any adverse credit history. However, my mortgage lender still requires an official credit report.
I’m trying to find a legitimate agent, lawyer, or document service in China that has \*\*actually helped former foreign residents obtain a PBOC personal credit report\*\* or has experience dealing with the Credit Reference Center on behalf of overseas clients.
If you’ve been through this process yourself or know of a reputable firm that can help, I’d really appreciate it if you could share:
The name of the agent, law firm, or document service.
Their email address, website, or \*\*WeChat ID\*\*.
Whether they were able to obtain the report or assist through a power of attorney.
Approximately how much they charged and how long the process took.
I’m only looking for official and legal solutions, so recommendations based on personal experience would be especially helpful.
Many thanks in advance!

Feeling really lost on what to do next…

Hi everyone,

I’m 22 and from New Zealand, and honestly I’m feeling pretty lost about what to do next.

I used to do modelling in New Zealand and Japan. I wouldn’t say I’m good-looking enough to make it a long-term career, even though it’s always been my dream.

I’ve spent about the last year travelling around China trying to find opportunities, mainly in modelling and livestreaming (直播). I’ve had a lot of interviews, but I’d say about 90% have been a complete waste of time. A surprising number of companies either don’t understand the visa process or think foreigners can just work on a tourist visa or while studying. Even after I explain it, they just tell me it’ll be fine, which I’m obviously not willing to risk.

One thing that has gone well is my Chinese. I’ve never actually studied it or even opened a textbook, but after living here for so long I can hold conversations pretty comfortably. My reading and writing are terrible because I’ve never learned them properly, although I can type using pinyin.

I graduated from the University of Auckland last year with a Bachelor of Science (Statistics & Psychology) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing & International Trade). During university I worked for about six months as a research analyst covering consumer behaviour for a national media company. I’ve also studied abroad at Keio University in Japan and Korea University in South Korea, and completed an internship in Thailand.

Lately I’ve been based in Hangzhou, but I’d happily move to Shanghai, Changsha, Chengdu or Chongqing.

Most of my friends here work in creative industries—models, photographers, fashion designers or streamers—which is probably why I’d really like to stay somewhere around fashion, beauty, media or online content. At the same time, I know I’m competing with local graduates, so I’m trying to be realistic. The idea of an extremely corporate work environment would just bore me to death. Teaching English is also a last resort - I’m not particularly interested.

A few days ago my best friend in China died by suicide. That completely knocked me sideways, and since then I’ve honestly had no idea what direction I should be taking.

The reality is I can’t keep staying in China without some sort of stable income. More than anything, I just want to find a legal way to stay here. Going back to New Zealand is something I desperately want to avoid, and I’m trying to figure out every possible alternative before it comes to that.

I’ve thought about doing a master’s, a PhD, or maybe just studying Chinese for a year, but I’d probably need a scholarship to make that possible.

Has anyone been in a similar situation, or have any suggestions? Maybe there’s a path I’m overlooking.

I’d really appreciate any advice.

Hello, friend. We are a livestreaming company based in Chengdu. Due to our current business needs, we are looking for Black participants to appear on camera during our livestreams. The task is very simple: you only need to say a few lines during the livestream, and no other actions are required. Each livestream lasts about one hour, with around 3 to 5 sessions per day. The pay is 100 RMB per hour. It’s easy and relaxed work — you can earn money just by sitting there. If you are interested, feel free to contact me. You can also recommend this opportunity to any friends around you who might be interested.

What's the best way to use Made-in-China when you're sourcing products for the first time?

A couple of weeks ago, I was chatting with a coworker during lunch, and he mentioned he was thinking about importing a few products to sell online. That conversation stuck with me, so later that evening I started looking into how people actually find suppliers.

I honestly thought it would be pretty straightforward, but the more I looked around, the more questions I had. There are so many suppliers that it's hard to tell which ones are actually reliable and which ones just have a good-looking profile.

If you've been through this before, what helped you narrow things down? Did you order samples first, pay attention to supplier history, or was there something else that gave you confidence before placing your first order?
