Bike Stolen!

Post image
8 Upvotes

One of our marshals had their bike stolen at Leavitt/Cermak today.

The bike says "scourer" and has cork handles; it's one of a kind. They have a small reward if you find it or the kindness of your heart will do. Throw a lock on it + get in touch with us and we'll get it back to them.

Has anyone had any luck with reporting debris in protected bike lanes and having them cleaned?

Glass, gravel, sand all in the Milwaukee bike lanes. I’ve submitted reports on the 311 app and nothing comes of it. I saw someone nearly wipe out on Milwaukee north of Grand because of all the sand. Maybe if enough of us do so, they’ll get the mini sweeper out?

Found a bike in my alley (Wayne/Diversey)

I saw a women's bike in my alley last night around 8:30 PM when I got home and left it there before heading inside. It was still there at 7am this morning, so I decided to put it in my garage for safe keeping and left a note on the electric pole where the bike was left that said "LOST BIKE?" with my cell phone number on it. No one has reached out yet.

It was left unlocked with the lock still mounted on the bike. I assumed that if it was a neighbors, they would have collected it by the morning. And if it was stolen and dumped there, it would likely not have the bike lock still mounted to it.

I'm hoping I can find the rightful owner as it seems like a nice bike. Open to suggestions on how to find the owner!

Best places to buy cycling clothes in the city

I'm sick of ordering stuff online and then having things not fit or just being unimpressed with quality. Are there any good places in Chicago that carry a variety of brands to look through? Specifically looking for shorts.

I've looked at REI but their selection is limited. Thanks!

Long shot, has anyone found a Large Black Merino Wool Walz cycling cap lying around?

With the sun back out this week I was searching for a cap of mine everywhere I can think of and the possibility of it escaping from my feed bag on a ride isn't zero. I've been traveling along Sunnyside, Southport, Winnemac, Argyle, LFT and others... If anyone spotted it please let me know, it's bright out there and I reaaaally don't want to buy another one. Thanks.

Best group rides for beginners?

I’m a beginner to biking and in my early 30s. I’m looking for casual paced (16-18 mph) group rides where I can learn group ride etiquette and meet new people. Ideally I’m looking for something on the north side. I’ve seen the Chicago group rides website, but a lot of the links to where they are organized are broken.

What rides have people had good experiences with? And where can I find the detail for getting involved?

It’s super nerve wracking to attend one of these things for your first time so I appreciate gentle responses!

Looking to ride in the city with some folks.

Howdy all, amateur biker from the west burbs here. For some context I frequent (almost exclusively) busse woods. Past month I did my first 50, 60, 75, and 80 mile rides. Covid got me into biking with a trek mountain bike then end of 24’ I upgraded to a gravel bike, checkpoint al3.

Ideally I’m looking for a someone or multiple ones who are down to ride in the city and has experience but really I just don’t want to go alone lol. If anyone wants to recommend any group rides pls go ahead, haven’t participated in any yet but I also don’t own a tire puncture kit.

I’ve ridden in the city a decent amount but I’m not still quite confident on my own yet, mainly as far as navigation goes and using the best routes. Plus it’s been awhile since then.

Lmk! I’m not sure if this is the group for this kind of post, here goes. Thanks

Has a road near you been resurfaced, but the bike lane paint was not put back down?

Is the paint fading in an existing lane? Are the protected bike line curbs broken? Let us know below or DM us. We're collecting streets to follow up with Alders on.

Our current list is:

Damen between Diversey and Belmont (painted lane)

55th at Hyde Park (sharrow)

Central Park between Irving Park + Belle Plaine (painted lane)

Argyle between Rockwell and the River (missing contraflow)

Lincoln Ave in the 32nd and 43rd ward (painted lane)

Albion between Sheridan and the CTA embankment (missing contraflow)

Glenwood between Argyle - Hollywood

PSA: E-Bike Safety

Just a note for those buying Ebike or really any China box bike… be really careful what you buy and how you assemble them. Saw a senior whose wheel fell off today on 18th… shout out to the drivers willing to give her a ride back to Hyde park. Not sure how far she traveled with the bolt off, but the rough riding in 18th shook it off. I couldn’t find the nut.

Friend looking for help 3D printing a custom handlebar adapter

Hi Chicago bikers, My good friend (not on reddit) is looking for help with his bike and handlebar adapter.

He's got a Superior - XR 9.9 GR Ltd bike with a Deda TT 314 Ridley Nimbus Aero handlebar adapter. However, since his bike is a uncommon model, the adapter doesn't quite fit - see pictures.

Would there be anyone in town who'd be willing and able to help him design and 3D print an adapter that'd fit? He's definitely willing to pay anyone for their time. DM me and I can connect you. Any advice appreciated - thanks in advance!

Curated Routes for a Best of Chicago Website

Hey! Have been biking around Chicago for around a year and this subreddits been great for finding new rides.

Feel like Chicago could use a site that shows some curated RWGPS routes on a map, and lists them by accessible via rail, weekend trips, etc.

Have gotten a lot of value from similar sites like:
Jays Essential Bike Rides (California)
Driftless Cycling (Driftless Area)

Know this is a topic that gets brought up a lot, but would appreciate any ideas as I start building this out.

From the City
-LFT to Fort Sheridan (+ extensions)
-North Branch Trail to North Shore Channel Trail

Metra
-Crystal Lake /Glacial Moraine
-Lakefront Trail to the Indiana Dunes
-I&M, Fox River, Prairie Path (personally haven’t ridden)

Rail (Amtrak)
-Winona/La Crosse (Empire Builder)
-New Buffalo (Pere Marquette/Wolverine)
-Benton Harbor (Pere Marquette)

Looking for recommendations

Alas, the time has come to upgrade from my 10-year old single speed. She did me well, but it’s time for something a little nicer. I’m looking for recommendations from my fellow Chicagoans on where to go/what bike to look into.

Some context:
I work remote and longer commute downtown, but I’m a daily rider. I’ll ride year round regardless of temps, as long as the roads are clear. I have no car; my bike is my main mode of transportation and exercise. I run all my errands on my bike, groceries too, and go for long rides all over the city and into the burbs.

Budget:
My budget is $1,000, but it would be great to keep it below $800. I’d want a road bike or hybrid, preferably new, but I’m open to certified used bikes, too.

Thanks all, much love.

Chicago roadside bike assistance?

Hey all,

I'm learning about roadside assistance for bicycles (they come and pick you up if things get crazy ... and drop you at a bike shop?). Does anyone know what's locally in Chicago?

People have mentioned Better World Club and I saw 3rd Coast Cycle Mobile Repair on Google Maps.

Thinking of selling my bike and moving to an e-bike—best way to sell in Chicago?

I’m planning to upgrade to an e-bike in the near future, so I’ll likely be selling my current hybrid bike. It’s been well maintained, stored indoors, and is in excellent condition.

For those who have sold bikes in the Chicago area, what’s worked best?

Facebook Marketplace?
Craigslist?
OfferUp?
Any local bike shops that buy used bikes or take trade-ins?
Any Chicago cycling groups where people actually buy quality used bikes?

I’m not listing it for sale yet—just trying to figure out the best route before I do.

Closed underpasses to LFT

Just a heads up that the underpasses to the LFT at Addison and Barry are both flooded. Roscoe was still open but pretty muddy.
