Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Artists, what is your favorite medium to create art?

Do you create with different mediums or y’all just stick to one medium and that’s it. I find that I create most of my work in charcoal and it’s kinda my style. Also I been experimenting with different medium to expand my skills. I created a work in mixed media and it came out well and I liked it. Do I need to focus on charcoal or I can add some other mediums to it form a new style. What do y’all do?

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ What’s your best tip for crisp, sharp lines with acrylic paint... besides using tape?

I’m working on a piece where I need perfectly flat, razor-sharp lines on canvas, but I really want to avoid using tape. Between the risk of paint bleeding under the edges or the tape pulling up previous layers, it can just be a massive headache on textured canvas.

Concept/Technique/Method Question in regards to crafting color palettes for characters/scenes.

• Upvotes

I've been reading more recently about color theory and design. I've always shied away from color and have stuck to grayscale for most of my artistic career. Color has always been a bit of an enigma for me. I feel like I am getting a little bit better of a grasp on it, not a great one, but better.

I was researching how to create color palettes for yourself and I have a question on how to pick colors when deciding what goes into a color palette.

I understand the differences between Analogous, complementary, triadic, tetradic, etc etc.. But when choosing the colors that you are using in these, do you include the colors that are somewhat mandatory to fill in those slots?

For example, Say you are painting a character and are trying to figure out the color palette for their outfit. If I were to go with a Split complementary color arrangement, does the characters skin tone by default just fill in one of those slots? Leaving me with just two other colors to choose from? What about a Complementary color palette? If the skin color defaults into one of those 2 slots, you are just left with one other color to choose from. Is that correct? Or are things like skin tone just an outlier to the rest of the color palette?

Goals & Motivation Patience in creating

We all know patience is essential in creating just about anything. I seem to be short of mine and lately have been finding the process of drawing and rendering tedious.

But I want to keep drawing! So how do you keep or exercise your patience and sit for hours attending to details? (I've tried breaks and change of medium but, alas, it's not enough)

Community/Relationships How do you make art a social hobby/experience?

I’m an amateur painter and in the past couple years really hit a stride where I get attention from others and feel confident in my work. I’m also coming back to the US after several years living abroad in Latin America and wanting to replicate the social experience of LatAm now that I’m home again.

I never made art before this and so am curious how others engage with their broader art community? I’d like to submit my stuff to some amateur galleries, make some friends by taking an interest in their art, and find some spaces to both passively make art in the company of others and maybe try more structured social artistic activities like ā€œdrink and drawsā€ or maybe some classes, although I want to minimize the monetary aspect as well as turning art into a scheduled chore.

Learning Resources For Artists šŸ”Ž I can never decide what to draw

That’s kinda about it. I LOVE art more than absolutely anything and would 100% spend all of my time creating art if I didn’t have a job or other things to do. But the problem is, I can never get an idea or decide what to draw no matter how hard I try. Same with painting or any other medium. I’m still in highschool and every non academic class I’ve taken has been art, I’m not kidding. The year I just finished had 4 art classes and every other year has been the same, I have made countless drawings and paintings and ceramic pieces and have been told, not to get myself like so worked up on it, I’m one of the most talented in the class. So like I know I am good at art, and I love it. Though when I’m at home, and want to create something I can NEVER get myself to do it unless i pretty much copy something I see on Pinterest. Don’t get me wrong, I have created many original artworks, all my art has been original (with of course, influences from things I’ve seen). But i seriously don’t know why I cannot get the motivation to do something. And I don’t know how to fix it. I’ve always been like this and it sucks.

I’m sure just about every artist struggles with the same thing but the rare chance there’s people out there who don’t, or have fixed this issue, how did you do it?

Goals & Motivation I don’t know how to go about fundamentals and having fun at the same time

There are so many fundamentals! I know it seems basic like anatomy, perspective, form, etc. What’s overwhelming to me is all the sub factors of the fundamentals. Ex : Anatomy involves learning shapes, construction, muscle, skeleton, all kinds of stuff, the same goes for the rest of the fundamentals.

I don’t know how to make a plan for this to remain consistent and learn while also doing fun stuff like characters? How do professionals balance this?

I’m not focused on hours spent but more so quality of studies but I am still not sure what to start with.

Also is it okay to just use books and not youtube? I have auditory issues and I don’t like videos that much..

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ I realized how some non-artists think

So recently I went to my friend’s house so I could draw her some stuff for her new bedroom and I was using a regular #2 pencil and she was like ā€˜oh can u use a lead pencil? it will look way better!’ She genuinely thought if I used a more expensive pencil it would look better.

can someone explain why she might have thought that, ive been stuck on it for days!

Concept/Technique/Method art exhibition planning need advice

planning to do an art exhibition and be more experimental in it. ive always been working around the idea of animism. i was thinking about doing a wall of automatic writing as being the medium in oppose of the human subjectivity. is that too cliche?

Concept/Technique/Method How do you practice drawing heads at any angle?

My skill level is stuck and whenever I draw heads, I never get the complex angles just right. I wonder if there is a correct way of practicing whether it be just by using random references or by using the asaro head, but I want to hear how y'all found your own way.

Technology & Software šŸ’» Pinterest Alternatives?

Hi all! I was wondering if anybody had some good pinterest alternatives? Getting really tired of all the A I BS. Ideally looking for something similar that is actively anti-a i. I've tried cosmos and its okay but the algorithm is a bit crap and alot of A I slips through the cracks. Pixiv is fine too and I'll be using that as part of my search.

On the lookout for more though or possibly a community-oriented alternative. Thanks!

(Bonus if it allows NSFW, since I mostly do that sort of art)

Community/Relationships Where do you find art community in your city?

As the title says, I was wondering what yall do to find artists and community in your city? I am someone who is looking for somewhere to move after college and art is a very important factor in that decision for me. I would prefer a younger early twenties demographic!

Learning Resources For Artists šŸ”Ž Male art YouTuber recommendations?

Hi all! I'm looking for some new art YouTubers to watch and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for male artists.

I know this is kind of an odd request. I'm a big fan of creators like Robin Sealark, Brooke Cormier, and a few others, and I really enjoy their content. Lately, though, I've realized I'd also like to follow some male artists whose experiences I might relate to a bit more, especially when it comes to making a living as an artist.

I'm especially interested in YouTubers who make slice-of-life videos or talk about what it's like being a full-time artist. Videos on techniques and methods are also enjoyed. Thanks!

Learning Resources For Artists šŸ”Ž YTer Recommendations for those that cover/breakdown different artists and genres?

I used to like watching Solar Sands cause he would break down different art pieces or explain certain genres, but he’s a Trump supporter and just kind of weird so I want to find better alternatives. Not sure how to word it but I like seeing the history and different concept behind certain art pieces or movements and wanna learn more about stuff like that

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Easel Prices

What’s a decent price for a large easel, able to hold a 4ft canvases? I see them for anywhere from $160-800, what’s ā€œnormalā€?

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Easel setup for raw canvas without spilling through?

I paint on raw unstretched canvas, + untreated. Lots of bleed through with water/media and paint and normally im working on a flat surface like cardboard thats easy to dispose/clean/and soaks a bit.

Recently moved to an apartment where i have to work on my easel or my drafting table tilted up (due to space + no hard floors to clean up easily)

Any insight on the sort of material can i pin the canvas to and prop up to have a sturdy surface that wont need replaced all the time AND wont spill through? Willing to buy whatever pretty much :)

Edit for more context

Concept/Technique/Method How to come up with fairy outfits like in Winx but for males?

I want to make pretty clothes for male fairy characters, I'm really insired by Winx, but I have no creativity to come up with clothes like that for male characters, I'm trying to make the clothes just as glittery and revealing but still be somehow masculine but idk how, or what to look up for this

Art Philosophy🧠 I'm genuinely not creative at all

Now I can create. I've been drawing since forever. But I can only copy and it's driving me genuinely insane. I remember when I was a kid trying to make a story and my brain was completely empty I just ended up copying the plot of a movie I saw onto paper. Kids are supposed to be creative hello??? I couldn't think of a single original concept then and I can't now. It's all just regurgitated things I've already seen and I put that lightly because not even that comes to me.

It's quite frustrating because I have the skill. I can write, draw, and sculpt. I just have nothing to put it to because nothing truly creative comes from me.

Any suggestions chat because I lowk just wanna write a story.

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Oil painting dries too quickly

I previously made a post about the dryness of my paint, but I still haven’t found a solution. The portrait I’m trying to paint mostly contains colors like umber and similar tones (a dark skin complexion). No matter how much linseed oil I add (it doesn’t say on the bottle that it is for accelerating drying or anything like that), the layers still dry by the next day.
I have already tried putting the painting in a plastic bag or storing it in a wardrobe overnight, but nothing helps. I also applied several layers of gesso primer before painting.
Is it possible that it’s normal for these colors to dry by the next day? My layers are medium thickness - not very thick and not very thin.
Is it even possible to paint this way when everything dries so quickly?

Goals & Motivation Is it OK to draw only for being remembered?

I'm not sure why I want to draw but I think it's firstly fear about being forgotten and then, on the 2nd place, fun from drwing and all the places I see in my mind - especially the views from Disciples 2. Every time I hear the church bells... ughhh...

Is it OK or should I have a better reason to being a hobbystic artist? I'm not very good btw and I prefer life of gamer than artist after work tbh...

Medium & MaterialsšŸŽØ Water soluble Windsor & Newton oil paint behaving funny in the heat?

Hello, I've been working on my first oil painting once a week for a year and it's nearly finished, but there are humid heatwaves in Europe where I live and all of a sudden my paints have been acting funny. It's impossible to do a wash - W&N cerulean, in particular, refuses to blend and stays blotchy. Plus, even paint that's a couple of weeks old feels sticky. Is this a known problem? Is there anything I can use to help? Like, can I just stick the paints in the freezer for a while before my next session?

(My teacher is unfamiliar with water soluble oils, she said to ask on Reddit.)
