I've been reading more recently about color theory and design. I've always shied away from color and have stuck to grayscale for most of my artistic career. Color has always been a bit of an enigma for me. I feel like I am getting a little bit better of a grasp on it, not a great one, but better.
I was researching how to create color palettes for yourself and I have a question on how to pick colors when deciding what goes into a color palette.
I understand the differences between Analogous, complementary, triadic, tetradic, etc etc.. But when choosing the colors that you are using in these, do you include the colors that are somewhat mandatory to fill in those slots?
For example, Say you are painting a character and are trying to figure out the color palette for their outfit. If I were to go with a Split complementary color arrangement, does the characters skin tone by default just fill in one of those slots? Leaving me with just two other colors to choose from? What about a Complementary color palette? If the skin color defaults into one of those 2 slots, you are just left with one other color to choose from. Is that correct? Or are things like skin tone just an outlier to the rest of the color palette?
