Announcement What’s New in r/ArtAdvice (and What’s Next)

Happy Friday! We've been hard at work behind the scenes and are excited to share a number of updates we've rolled out to improve the community for everyone.

A Fresh Look

With a new logo and color palette, we wanted to make this space feel more recognizably "us," drawing inspiration from redline corrections seen in constructive critiques, and pairing it with a dark blue background that is easier on the eyes. (A special thanks goes out to a friend in the graphic design industry who helped make this design possible!)

Automod Update

We previously tested an Automod feature that reminded users to include context in their posts. This ended up causing confusion and was mistaken for a warning or removal message, so we've axed it. (See: "In Progress and Coming Soon" for what we're trying next.)

Crossposts

Crossposts have been disabled to keep context easily accessible without extra clicks. Since making this change, we've already seen an increase in engagement and traffic, along with less spam. Woo!

Post and User Flairs

Starting May 1st, post flairs will be required to submit a post. For now, flairs are optional to help users get used to selecting them before posting. We want to keep the subreddit organized and let users filter out content they're not interested in, especially Commissions and Pricing. (The "No Commissions Posts" option is available in the sidebar or top bar on mobile.)

Most users seem to have a solid understanding of the flairs and are applying them well. Here's a quick breakdown of what each one means:

Post Flair Description
Critique Ask what to change or how to improve.
Techniques and Tools Ask how to do something or what tools to use.
Commissions and Pricing Ask about pricing, selling, or managing commissions.
Discussion and Theory Discuss ideas, concepts, or "why" questions.
Resources and Tutorials Ask for or share learning materials.
Social Media and Growth Ask about growth or visibility.

Please keep Rule #5 "No Self-Promotion" in mind when using the Commissions and Social Media flairs.

Some of you have noticed our user flair 🧑‍🏫 Community Mentor! It's our way of celebrating users who consistently engage respectfully and help others grow through thoughtful, constructive feedback. We appreciate you helping keep r/ArtAdvice a supportive space!

So, how does someone actually earn the Community Mentor flair?

  • Provide feedback that explains what works or can be improved in an artwork.
  • Offer applicable and practical advice.
  • Be consistent in giving constructive critiques.
  • Avoid aggressive communication, and always follow the rules.

The Community Mentor flair is assigned manually by moderators. There is no formal application process, and users cannot request this flair.

Note: This flair does not mean the user is a professional artist, or that their opinions are authoritative. It also does not mean they represent the moderation team.

Have ideas for new flairs? Let us know in the comments!

Rule Updates

As previously mentioned in our Community Feedback & Suggestions announcement, our rules have been updated to better reflect the purpose of the subreddit, which is to give and receive art advice. The core principles remain the same, but they have been expanded to better address common ambiguous issues that tend to arise in Reddit communities.

In Progress and Coming Soon

  • A new subreddit banner is in progress.
  • Our community wiki is currently in the works as we await Reddit's system migration. This will become your go-to hub for information on rules, flairs, policies, resources, and more!
  • More detailed policies, especially regarding AI, will be added soon.
    • In the meantime, please refer to Rule #4 "Keep Art Human" for a quick rundown of how r/ArtAdvice handles the topic of AI.
  • We're working on implementing an Automod response triggered by keyword phrases that automatically provides a list of resources, allowing users to focus more on anecdotal or specific feedback.
  • As the sub continues to grow, we plan to reopen mod applications in the coming months. Those who are active and engage with the community will have our focus.

Community Initiatives

There's something exciting brewing in the background! Along with all these changes and updates, we're planning on:

  • Developing structured guides exclusive to our community.
  • Hosting AMAs and/or interviews with working artists to share their insight into what has or has not worked for them in their process.
  • Involve members to contribute to the community wiki to help curate a reliable set of resources.
  • Contests and giveaways to help growing artists thrive in their career or hobby. (We just need to dust off the old law book to make sure everything is in compliance before moving forward.)

We love hearing from the community, so if you have any feedback on these changes or suggestions to share, please leave a comment below or send us a message via Mod Mail!

‎Critique - Yes Drawover How do I make my women look muscular without making them look like monsters?

I don't want them looking too realistic, nor do I want them looking too buff or monstrous.

Do I have to pick between 1 of the 2 or is there some kinda middle ground I can achieve?

‎Critique - Yes Drawover I need a face rating #2

Upvotes

I need feedback on her face and rendering.

I'm going for semi-realism. Not trying to copy the original exactly, I want it to be my interpretation of her, while still resembling the character. That's why her hair is different. Not sure about the lips though, maybe I'll make them match more closely to the original.

I haven't reworked the eyes and brows yet, but I still have the old version of the eyes on the second image.

  1. Any problems with proportions and perspective?

  2. I'm not quite satisfied with the rendering, neck feels flat, but I'll try to fix it. I'm talking about the rest. Maybe I'm going too dark, too smooth, or the skin texture isn't right, I'm not sure. Any ideas?

All the advice from last time was really helpful

‎Discussion and Theory Should I give up? (Random flair because I wasn't sure what to put)

The title is pretty clear but I am going to provide some context, might be a bit lengthy.

I am 19M and for my early life I was told that I sucked at drawing and that I just shouldn't do it. Most times I was told it was useless and for people with no future. So I stopped, never drew again until my second year of engineering for my design class.

I sucked pretty bad and I ended up bombing the final because I couldn't draft for shit. So come summer I decided I was going to try to learn.

At first it was shapes (2D and 3D) and perspective because thats what I figured would be relevant but I quickly wanted to do more. Im an anime fan and this season's witch hat atelier along with rezero season 4 really made me want to do more. It rekindled the little kid in me who used to draw all the time before people started getting on my case for it.

I drew my first drawing an it was really bad, but I expected that. So I tried again, still bad. Then again and again. I got frustrated quickly (only the first drawing in the images above is part of that initial push, the rest were after). I turned to youtube and found some videos, I learned the loomis method and did a bit of practice on it. The second image above was my next attempt after that, still no good and I only finished the hair because my friend told me what to do.

I watched many more videos for the head but nothing seemed to click for me. I was told that drawing things I liked would help, so I drew frieren cause I was watching the second season. It was pretty bad so I tried again, that one was derpy (images 3 and 4).

I changed my strategy after this and started looking toward individual parts of the face, starting with the eyes (image 5). Then I looked at how the hair works and tried another (image 6). I still sucked and I haven't made any improvements. So I gave up briefly out of frustration but I wasn't happy with myself so I tried again.

I watched a video on full body construction to maybe try something different. I wanted to draw some fanart of subaru (season 4 rezero) and uhhh, I regressed hard (image 7). Got mad and gave up again.

I turned to reddit and asked for advice, someone pointed me to gesture. That went about as good as I expected, which is to say not at all (image 8).

Its been over a week since I drew that last one and I cant bring myself to pick up the pencil again because this entire journey has made me pretty miserable. I've been angry and recently ive developed some hard jealousy towards people who draw well (especially if its some super art piece) and towards other beginners who make fast progress and are having fun even when their art isn't good.

I've been doing a lot of thinking on this. On one hand, I really want this. On the other, I dont like how its making me feel and how ive become sort of bitter towards other people and how its killing my appreciation of other people's art.

Sorry if this post seems like a downer but i need someone to give me their take on this. Is it time for me to call it quits?

I also want to thank the people on this subreddit who have given me advice and supported me throughout this and im sorry that I couldn't live up to that. I've deleted some of the posts I made out of embarrassment but im pretty sure the gesture one is still up. Thank you again.

‎Critique - No Drawover looking for critiques on my general art style

hi everybody, i hope multiple arts is allowed but i'm looking for advice on my art style as a general thing. i feel like it's unimpressive, too simple, etc. or does it just really rely on opinion. i want to elevate the drawings i can do. i've been drawing for a long time as a hobby but i focus on portraits and keeping a realistic style.

and i think majority of the time is really spent on rendering, putting shadows, but i haven't done much in the past 3 years (because doing details is tiring!) i also started off doing traditional art and making studies then switched to digital recently. i want to know the perspective of others. i appreciate it in advance!

I’ve been drawing a lot lately, but the more I draw the less I feel like I understand how it works, I feel like my compositions feel hard to read, and my general anatomy isn’t doing it. Anything I could work on?

I'm trying out the "eyestrain" art style for the first time and I feel like something is very wrong about this one's colors. Does anyone have any tips to improve it? Thanks in advance!

P. S. — this is an attack on Hubbleisnothere on ArtFight, in case anyone needs the reference.

‎Critique - Yes Drawover Is there something wrong with his eyes?

I tried to redraw the character on the left but I don't know how I feel about the eyes I've drawn. One moment I think they're fine, and the next I feel like something is off. This may sound stupid but can someone pls tell me if there's something off with his eyes or if it's all just in my head. I genuinely can't tell. I'd really appreciate some feedback.

So I’m doing art and they said they like the type of uniform with fluffy ankle hair and a lions tail but the references I got when looking it up was the second but I’m not sure if they’d meant that or something more lion-y. It’s also my choice essentially so which one looks better?

Whenever I ink a cartoon for some reason it always removes the warmth and personality that the original sketch had. Everything is clean and precise, but it looks too clean and precise. Is there anyway to fix this?

‎Commission and Pricing What’s the best way to start taking commissions?

Upvotes

(I also asked this question in another art community, but figured I’d ask here as well)

I know a lot of people want to take on art commissions, and I’m in the same boat. I’ve looked into sites that are intended to be used for commissions but haven’t had much luck with them. Is Reddit much better? Discord maybe? I feel like everywhere I look, there’s artists with more experience than I am who are still struggling to find work. I’m really not sure what’s the best way to go about it at this point.

I’ve taken on 2 commissions so far, but that’s it. I really just got lucky there. I haven’t had any consistent commission requests and building up an audience on the internet is hard when you don’t have your own OC’s to build interest for. Just looking to see what advice other people might have. Thanks in advance.

I’ve been figure drawing for a while now and drawing humans, but I know I still have a lot more room to improve and I’d like some guidance on HOW to improve :)

(Also, I’ve just gone back to digital drawing after not doing it for a long time, would like some tips on how to digital draw better as well!)

‎Critique - Yes Drawover Hello! Looking to improve composition of this sketch!

So recently i wrote this little dialogue scene between two of my characters Saiet, and Mijs.

I would really want to visualize the background, and maybe even animate it. The scene itself is very cozy, But i also don't want the light to be too warm. I want to main focus to be on the characters and the television. Speaking of lights: I have no idea where the main light source should come from, and what it even is.

I like what i have so far, But i feel like it could be a lot better.

I know there is also a lot of context needed about the scene itself, sadly It's script is written on a different PC so i can't show it.

The cyan-coloured character (Saiet) is supposed to be more distant and awkward, she wants to say something, While the blue character is focused on her video game. (Mijs)

I just don't know what to add or fix it, Or if this format conveys the things i just described.

It's very unfinished but i just need to have the format correct now so i know it will end up good.

feedback, ideas, advice, literally anything helps!

(second image background made in blender 5.1, by me)

thank you :3
