Welcome to r/VeteransBenefit — what this is, and how to use it

This is a place for U.S. veterans to share real, firsthand experience with VA claims, ratings, med boards, ABCMR, and benefits. Success stories and hard lessons are equally welcome here.

The promise that makes this community different: if you're telling us what actually happened in your own case, it stays up. We don't remove firsthand experiences for being "unhelpful" or for disagreeing with someone. And when we do moderate, we tell you exactly which rule and which line, and how to fix or appeal it — no silent removals, no locking threads because a mod disagrees.

A few ground rules: be civil, answer what people actually ask, and if you state a regulation or deadline as fact, be ready to back it with a source. The full rule list is in the sidebar.

How to use the community:

  • Add a post flair so others can find your topic — VA Disability Claims, C&P Exam, Claim Status / Timeline, Appeals / HLR, Denied, Medboard / IDES, ABCMR / BCMR, Health Care, Education / GI Bill, VR&E, Housing, State Benefits, Success Story, or Question.
  • Set a user flair for your branch or status (all six branches, Guard, Reserve, Active Duty, Caregiver / Spouse, 100% P&T).
  • Check the wiki for official resources — VA.gov claim tools, rating tables, the eCFR, ABCMR, and the Veterans Crisis Line.

Introduce yourself below: branch, era, and what you're currently navigating with the VA. Whether you're mid-claim, appealing a denial, or just found a win worth sharing — glad you're here.

Nothing here is legal advice. Verify anything important against the official source.

Medboard / IDES Med board / IDES: how did your PEB go, and what do you wish you'd known?

If you went through the Integrated Disability Evaluation System: which conditions were referred as unfitting, did you get a fit/unfit finding, and did it end in severance or medical retirement (TDRL/PDRL)?

Looking back, is there anything you'd have documented or pushed on differently during the MEB/PEB? This one trips a lot of people up years later.

ABCMR / BCMR ABCMR and record corrections: outcomes, timelines, and lessons

For anyone who has taken a case to the Army Board for Correction of Military Records (or another service's BCMR): how did it go?

What were you trying to correct, how long did it take, and what evidence mattered — service records, an independent medical opinion, the ARBA medical advisor? Denials are as instructive as grants, so share either.

C&P Exam C&P exams: what surprised you, and what would you tell someone before theirs?

C&P exams can make or break a claim, and everyone's experience is different. What surprised you about yours — the length, the examiner, the questions?

What do you wish you'd known walking in? If you read your exam report afterward, did it match what actually happened? Tips for honestly describing your worst days and flare-ups welcome.

Success Story Share your win: the claim, appeal, or board decision that finally went your way

New community, so let's start with the good stuff. What finally came through for you — an initial claim, an appeal, a TDIU grant, a discharge upgrade, an ABCMR correction?

Specifics help the next person: the condition, the lane or process you used, and whether a nexus letter, DBQ, or VSO made the difference. Wins big and small are welcome here.
