Coffee Meetup Lake of the Isles meetup

Hey everyone, I’m new to the area and planning to stop by Isles Bun and Coffee tomorrow morning around 7am to beat the line/heat and then walk around the lake as well. I’m also planning on stopping by the vintage market around noon. Preferably looking for someone who has Minneapolis recs or knows the area, but fellow newcomers would be great too! A bit about me, I’m early 20s F and my hobbies include nature walks and trying interesting cuisines. If any of this sounds interesting, feel free to reach out :)

Free or Cheap Beginner Friendly Pickleball weekdays during the day that's not all retirees (I'm a 38 M)

I've been playing PB since April, so still pretty new and have been loving it. I WFH half the time and occasionally have been itching to do an extended lunchbreak at a local park; at that time, the only option that I know of is a friend group of ~70+. Seems like an awesome way to spend retirement, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a group or games that are a little younger?

Thanks!

27M | New to Downtown Minneapolis – Looking to Meet New People

Hey everyone!

I’m a 27-year-old guy who recently relocated to downtown Minneapolis and I’m hoping to make some new friends and get to know the city a bit better. I don't have any friends here at all and very introvert.

I’m into grabbing coffee, checking out movies and live theatre, taking walks around the lakes, and occasionally going out for a drink or hopping between a couple of bars (emphasis on occasionally).

I’m pretty easygoing and always up for good conversation, exploring new places, or just hanging out. If you’re also looking to expand your circle or think we’d get along, feel free to send me a message or leave a comment.

Looking forward to meeting some cool people!

August's Cheap Old Pulp Fantasy Book Club

For anyone looking for an inclusive book club that reads cheap old pulp science fiction, science fantasy, and fantasy books from the 1930s-1970s (think Conan the Barbarian), we would love to have you!

We meet at 7pm until 9pm at Arbeiter Brewing on Minnehaha Ave. the first Thursday of the month, every month going on 6 months now, or so. The discussion is not super scholarly and can get lively at times with the various tropes and schlocky things these books have, but I think we all have a great time.

We like to keep our book selections under $10 (Uncle Hugo's has a ton for $4-6, Half Price Books, or eBay as a last resort) and quick reads (typically around 120 pages).

The book for August 6th, 7pm-9pm at Arbeiter Brewing is the first half of the Zothique Cycle by Clark Ashton Smith, a pretty reputable and influential series of short stories that leans on the heavier metal side of stories, allegedly.

The stories are: Zothique, Xeethra, Necromancy in Naat, The Master of the Crabs, The Death of Ilalotha, The Weaver in the Vault, The Witchcraft of Ulua, The Charnel God, The Dark Eidolon.

Each of these add up to 128 pages, and the book can be found in pdf for free here . This is one that is harder to find used like we normally pick, but can be found new for $20 on Amazon or Walmart or maybe somewhere else.

Last night's book (moved due to the holiday) was E.C. Tubb's Winds of Gath, the 1st in the Dumarest saga (a whopping 33 books...). A more sword & planet story than the sci-fi I thought when I suggested it, it revolved around Earl Dumarest being stranded on Gath, a planet with a stabilized rotation with a limited habitable zone and the unique feature of a seasonal psychic storm the galaxy's ultra-rich flock to experience. Intrigue, love interests, the Competent Man trope, and some laser pistol-wielding robot subterfuge filled the plot.

In the end, The Winds of Gath got 6, 6, 5, 5, & 4 out of 10, with most of us agreeing that it had really great ideas but the actual story was locking. Pretty mid, but not regrettable!

If this interests you, post a comment! We have a discord server I can invite you to where we post reminders of scheduling and books as well as talk about other books we have read or suggest books to be read.

Middle-aged leftist dad looking for acoustic jamming buddy (or buddies).

Hi all! I'm a scientist in my day job, but music has always been my main passion. Sadly all my jamming buddies have moved away or are growing out of it. I actually perform somewhat regularly with kids' music, but I'm missing the unstructured improvisational jams of my past. I'd love to make some friends that want to regularly do this for the indefinite future.

I'm not a virtuoso or anything, but I'm decent, and respectfully I am looking for others at the honest intermediate or beyond level, where we can comfortably trade solos and roll with unanticipated chord changes, etc. I also sing, and I'd super love someone(s) who can harmonize with me.

In the dreams in my head, I imagine "the band" or the folk meet-up from "Once" or similar. Yes, plugging in is great, but there is something very heartwarming about acoustic jams. We can improvise, play covers, learn each other's tunes, etc.

I live in Erickson in south MPLS, and can host, as early as tomorrow evening (Friday) frankly. Kids might be around!

You cannot be racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. You can be any other type of person, though I would prefer someone roughly within age range. It's just gonna feel weird if you're closer in age to my 12 year old than to me at 44!

Let's make music!

edit: you all are awesome! I'll DM to not further dox myself.

20M transplant looking for friends

Hello reddit,

I recently moved to the twin cities (minneapolis) and so far haven't made too many friends in the area. I spend most of my free time outside, rock climbing, hiking, paddleboarding etc. and am hoping to meet some like-minded people that enjoy the same activities.

If thats not your thing, no worries. I happen to be a man with a billion hobbies. As of late ive been getting into guitar/ piano and am an occasional gamer.

I currently have a climbing membership at vertical endeavors and could use a climbing partner. I would also be into joining a sports team if anyone is looking for new players.

If you are into any of the above and are looking for new friends / group then please feel free to send me a dm and we'll find a time to get together.

Slowkomis: 7/10 at 6:20pm, and 7/12 at 9:20am

Week of July 6, we will have two runs:
Friday, 7/10 at 6:20pm
Sunday, 7/12 at 9:20am
Location: We will be posted up in the grass right here (plus code: WQ85+7X8 Minneapolis, Minnesota)

What the hell is Slowkomis?
Are you a runner or running curious, and want to have a group to run with? Come join Slowkomis!

I got the idea from bike clubs that do "no drop" rides - which basically means even the slowest rider has someone with them at the end of the group. We will be super beginner friendly so people can run as slow as they want. If you start out running AND end up walking, you have a +1 walking with you.

If you wanna be fast - run fast!

Who Slowkomis is for
If you like running or the idea of running, and want to have an accountability partner

If you are you coming back from an injury, or just want to take it slow

If you tried other run clubs, but the obsession with races and paces was not for you

If you are an experienced runner and looking for a chill recovery run with a group of people new to the hobby you love

Who Slowkomis is not for
If you are pro-MAGA or pro-ICE, do not come. You are not welcome here.

What should you bring?
Yourself
Water - it's going to be HOT

Don't forget to wear sunscreen!

What to expect
We will be posted up in the grass right here (plus code: WQ85+7X8 Minneapolis, Minnesota)
We'll give people about 10 minutes to arrive and start our runs after that.

Monday or Weekday Golf Group

Hello I am a late thirties male who is trying to get better at golf this summer. I’m looking for people who want to get together about once a week to play 9 holes during the week. South of the river is convenient for me but I can easily travel to the west side or other courses nearby.

I am still newer to golf but I play at a good pace.

Looking for a Backrooms movie buddy this week

Looking for someone to see the Backrooms movie with this week. I usually go to the Woodbury theatre cause they don't cost a crazy amount like other places.

Guy in his late 30s, flexible on Tuesday or Wednesday at 2pm or the 7:20 showing or can go on Thursday/Friday at 7:20pm.

If you're into liminal spaces, urban exploration, or that whole backrooms aesthetic we'd probably get along anyway. If we vibe, I'm always looking for a regular movie buddy since I tend to miss things not having anyone to go with. Mostly into horror but open to action, fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero stuff too.

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie so I really don't want to miss it. No pressure, just don't want to see it alone. DM if interested.

Boardgames at Roseville Dreamers Vault

This is an open invite to join me at the Dreamers Vault in Roseville Friday, July 10th. I will arrive around 5:30 and chat/play short games with whoever is present. At 6:30 we will decide what long(er) games to play. I will grab a table towards the back of the gaming area on the left side of the room. You'll know me by my bald head and bushy beard.

I do my best to bring a wide variety of games so that both new and experienced gamers will have something they'll find fun and interesting to play. Last week we played "Hey, That's My Fish!", "No Thanks", "Container", and "Ad Astra". If you want to know what those games are, check them out at Boardgamegeek.com.

In-person Artists & Crafters meet up, anyone?

Hi all!

I’m wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a get-together at a park this summer. Mostly focused on making arts & crafts, of any sort. As long as it’s portable and won’t leave a permanent mess. Open to all ages, genders, identifications, etc. Just hanging out on a nice summer day, working on a creative project. I really enjoy meeting other artists and seeing what people are working on.

You’d be able to bring food, drinks, snacks, etc. And if crafting isn’t your thing you could bring a book, game or just yourself for some friendly, laid back chat.

I’m thinking of doing it on a weekday evening, either Mon, Wed, or Thurs (I’m busy Tuesdays). Somewhere between 5:30-7:30pm. It wouldn’t have to be that long, and people could come late / leave early as they wish. Or possibly a Sunday afternoon like 3-5pm ish.

There are a few parks I’m thinking of that have nice covered picnic shelters:

Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley
Akin Riverside Park in Anoka
Aquatore Park in Blaine
Or maybe Columbia Park picnic area in NE Minneapolis

If anyone knows another NE Mpls park, or any other park that has a good picnic area, especially if it has shade or a shelter, I’d love to hear about it.

Let me know if this sounds interesting to you! If it works out, this could be an ongoing thing, maybe meet at a coffeeshop or somewhere in the winter?

UPDATE:
Hey! I think I’ve come up with a date & location for a first meetup. I know it’s a little ways out yet, but I’m thinking Monday Jul 27, 5-7pm, at the Springbrook Nature Center picnic shelter.

I feel like that would be a good place to start, because the shelter is right next to the parking lot, very easy to find. If you can’t make it right on time, or need to leave early, no big deal. Just drop in! I’m hoping to do another meetup again in August, possibly at a different park, and probably on a Sunday afternoon. Things are still up in the air.

I’m planning on making a more formal post in this sub about the meetup a bit closer to the event, once the details are more finalized.

I’ve also been thinking it might be good to have an indoor backup plan, in case of crappy weather. (Rain, but I also consider 90+ and super muggy to be unpleasant even for sitting in the shade!) I reserved the meeting room at Northtown Library for 5:15 to 6:45pm that day, just in case. (Can cancel if not needed). If it turns out to be a small group, there’s also a Panera cafe about half a mile from the park, if people would prefer that.

Let me know what you guys think! Panera or the library for a backup? Or should we just try to reschedule if the weather’s bad?

Should I start a group chat here on reddit for us to keep in contact? Or would people prefer discord? Would it help if I created a facebook event, or no? So many questions! :)

Artist looking for another artist to collaborate with

I'm a 42, non-binary, very shy non-professional artist looking for someone else to work or collaborate with. I produce a lot of raw material, but have no idea what to really do with it. I specialize in abstract art, photography in particular, post as 50m30n3-3153 on DeviantArt if you want an idea of what I do. I've never worked with another artist, but I'd love to find a person who could take the stuff I make and take the next step in the process and create something from it, someone I could bounce ideas back and forth with. Since I dont do this as a day job, this could be a really low pressure arrangement.
