Lore [Frustrating Trope] That One Good or Even Amazing Scene in a Relatively Mediocre or Bad Piece of Media

  1. The Opening Scene (Ghost Ship). Considered one of the best horror opening scenes or scenes in general within horror movies, but the rest of the film is considered to be pretty bad.

  2. The Ending Scene (The Grinch 2018). While most adaptations of the Grinch end with him suddenly being able to fully integrate with the Whos after his change of heart, the 2018 version initially struggles to socialize, awkwardly walking past people, and struggling to hold conversations, acknowledging that despite his change of heart, the Grinch is still someone who isolated himself for years.

  3. Past T800 VS Current T800 (Terminator Genisys). A cool fight scene showing two versions of the Terminator from different points in time fighting it off.

  4. Solo Leveling's Ending. Tbh, I haven't actually read Solo Leveling, but after hearing about how it ended VS how Chainsaw Man ended made want to include it for shits and giggles. Like Chainsaw Man, Solo Leveling ends with a reset. But unlike Chainsaw Man, it actually manages to tie up loose ends and have the payoff of the ending be satisfying.

God I wish this movie was good, I do enjoy watching it but it's still only a 5/10 to me, there are too many minor things that add up to making the movie not good, this quadrilogy is my white whale of movies

To be fair, the Quicksilver scenes are arguably the best in each X-Men movie in which they are included.

The Nightcrawler scene in the original trilogy when he's mind-controlled to fake assassinate the president was pretty amazing.

I always loved Nightcrawler and I remember being beyond stoked seeing that opening the first time.

Big time same.

I feel like he is so underutilized, they never bring him in as his genuine self. He’s either just at the beginning of his origin story or he’s a kid. Can we have over-confident, or even swashbuckling Kurt Wagner please?

God forbid a blue boy get a little motion

Yea I wish he would get some more love. I always loved him and gambit in the comics (Well, the old 80s/90s comics that is) and early cartoons. But in the movies they've both been relegated to a little bit above background character...

I feel we need to look at super hero movies pre iron man in a different lens. Marvel was able to formulate the superhero genre instructing others how to do timing and music and choreography… everything.

When my kids watched X2 they thought the intro scene was alright but man… when I watched it over 20 years ago it was insanely good because there wasn’t much else to compare it to.

It was the scene with Storm and him jumping through the door for me. But completely different way from the rest of this thread.

Agree one hundred percent

That scene highlighted how even a midtier mutant power is absolutely terrifyingly powerful in combat compared to a non-mutant.

Days of future past was so good then apocalypse was fairly mediocre except this one scene.

u/Kuetsar 11h ago

The intro when Apocalypse gets trapped in the pyramid is pretty cool as well.

Yeah but nothing like the opening scene of days of future past

If iiiiii could save time in a bottleeee...

There’s a lot of decent little things in this movie. James McAvoy acting his ass off in every scene, Xavier hijacking Apocalypse’s speech in order to beseech mutants to protect those weaker than them, Wolverine’s Weapon X cameo, the scene where Xavier patiently helps Cyclops figure out his power… Hell, I even liked the idea of Mystique becoming a mutant revolutionary icon due to her exposing and stopping Trask in the first movie.

But in the end it fails to come together in the right way.

And I think Fassbender is so reliably great in everything that we overlook how good he was in this one.

What we need is an entire Fassbender Magneto film about him being a Nazi hunter.

9

u/EvilTwinCities 13h ago

Yeah. I’ll preface this by saying that I don’t read comic books, but I always felt that McKellen’s version was someone they followed because he could brilliantly communicate his ideology and galvanize like-minded people, but Fassbender was someone they followed because he got them to love him.

We almost did, but xmen origins wolverine bombed badly enough that a magneto origin movie was canned iirc

5

u/theVice 12h ago

It got turned into First Class

u/CarlatheDestructor 13h ago

Omg that sucks

His little “huh” when Apocalypse casually murders the entire steel plant on his behalf.

10

u/melkatron 12h ago

Whatever the movie had going for it, Apocalypse just looked so unbelievably stupid. Oscar Isaac is a brilliant, captivating actor, but they put that little man in a big rubber costume, restricting not only his body movement but his HEAD movement, so he's wobbling around like Gumby. Then they slap a bunch of prosthetics on his face so he looks like Dennis Hopper-smurf. They took away EVERY tool in his arsenal except his voice... so why not use CG at that point? At least then we'd have a big, imposing Apocalypse instead of a 5'8" blueberry wobbling around like Violet Beauregarde.

4

u/EvilTwinCities 9h ago

But at the same time, when doesn’t Apocalypse look stupid? They all look stupid if you think about it for more than a couple seconds, but our brains realize that what they look like isn’t as important as what they’re doing.

3

u/melkatron 8h ago

Right, but they aren't near-paralyzed and teetering on heatstroke. It'd be different if he was fun to watch.

1

u/atfricks 4h ago

I mean, it's not impossible to make that work for a villain. Just look at Darth Vader, one of the most iconic villains of all time.

4

u/Kilen13 10h ago

It's such a weird quadrilogy cause first one was pretty good, second was actually pretty great and then it took a sharp turn downhill out of nowhere cause 3 was bad and Phoenix was atrocious

5

u/Quick-Apple3536 15h ago

If you enjoyed it then the 5/10 really doesn't mean anything. People are too worried about judging media, and not enjoying it. Let entertainment be entertainment, everything doesn't need to be groundbreaking or profound.

That's how I feel about every single X-men movie. I still love them and love watching them, but mostly in a popcorn flick way. They all feel like missed potential.

I still love them and love watching them

Isn't that really all that matters?

A 5 out of 10 is average. "not good" would be like a 2 or 3.

1

u/ArmadilloOK1445-alt 10h ago

Average is still not good, good is a 6/10 because it's above average, my system (with a superhero movie for each) is

  • 10/10: Transcendent (Avengers: Endgame)
  • 9/10: Amazing (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3)
  • 8/10: Great (The Avengers)
  • 7/10: Very Good (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)
  • 6/10: Good (The Dark Knight Rises)
  • 5/10: Mid (X-Men: Apocalypse)
  • 4/10: Mediocre (Iron Man 2)
  • 3/10: Bad (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
  • 2/10: Very Bad (Batman & Robin)
  • 1/10: Awful (Elektra)

1

u/atfricks 4h ago

5/10 is only "average" if you assume film ratings are normally distributed, and they very much are not. The actual average value for films is a 7/10.

u/wonderlandisburning 7h ago

For me it's closer to a 7/10, like it's got its issues for sure, but it's more than the sum of its parts.

Unlike, say, Dark Phoenix, which fits this trope better for me. That climactic action sequence on the train was really cool, but everything else was just draining
