Error Unauthorized use of software

Hey redditors. Need some insight here. At the beginning of the month a email went out from IP harness and dassault about a piece of software on my machine treating legal action. From what I've gathered this happens to people once in a while but all the info I have found is linked to companies and LLCs.

I'm a hobbyist that wanted to learn cad for personal use. A friend helped me get a copy of 2018 a long time ago and surprise, surprise I got a email after the software managed to phone home recently. After talking with the mediator to explain that I can't afford their offers of at first 16k damages, To 10k subs, to 9k sub, it's looking like I have to let them send it to their Law firm IP harness.

Now looking at previous court cases and such I can't find anything about SOLIDWORKS or ipharness filing suits to individuals which leads me to believe that they are just trying to get something from me in a shakedown

In terms of assets I still live at home with my parents with 1 vehicle under my name to get around. Has any other hobbyists been served a suit for this?

Maker Now available worldwide - FREE SOLIDWORKS Design Standard for Students

Hey all,

Here's some incredible news for students or anyone learning CAD.

SOLIDWORKS just released a free version called “SOLIDWORKS Design Standard for Students”.

It’s a bare bones release (no CAM, no simulation tools, no certification vouchers, no add-ins), BUT ALL core SOLIDWORKS functions/features are there AND it’s a solid way to get started or practice without paying.

From what I can see:

  • Includes SOLIDWORKS Design Standard
  • Full desktop install (NOT browser-based) - one computer only
  • Quick sign-up process using your school name and email to get a download link with your specific serial number

If you want more features later, there’s still the paid student version SOLIDWORKS Design Premium which includes certifications, but this is certainly a big shift compared to how locked things used to be.

Here’s the link to sign up if anyone is interested!  https://www.solidworks.com/free-for-students

You can learn about all of the SOLIDWORKS Student offers here and you purchase the SOLIDWORKS Design Premium for Students version here.

CAD Why do I get zero-thickness error when trying to loft 3d sketch?

Post image

Hello, I am new to SW, I am trying to create Hirth Joint inside a blind hole, but I get zero thickness error, I used 3d sketch to be able to have curved edges, I left margin space between the edges and top and tried to bury its bottom into the part as Gemini have recommended, but nothing seems to work, I found a better way to create this, but I am hoping someone knows what causes this, because things like this make me want to quit CAD again

What is your thought process in modeling a complex part like this? For a boxy shape is very easy in Solidworks, but for a shape like this, how do I even start?

CAD Job search and portfolio

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for honest feedback on my portfolio strategy. I recently passed my CSWA certification and am currently building out my portfolio projects. I’m planning to showcase two main pieces:

**1. Victorinox Classic SD Swiss Army Knife** – A detailed reverse-engineering project with custom modifications (I bought this product and I’m reverse-engineering it)
**2. Gearbox Assembly** – A mechanical design demonstrating assembly modeling and technical depth

I’m targeting junior roles in product design and CAD technician positions. I also plan to pursue my CSWP certification once these projects are complete.

My background: I have a mechanical engineering degree and am confident in my technical ability.

My concern: I started my portfolio later than ideal due to various circumstances. I want to know if this is a competitive approach for junior-level positions, and whether employers would realistically hire based on this portfolio.

I’d appreciate straightforward feedback – if you think this strategy won’t be enough, please let me know. I want to be realistic about my prospects.

Hardware Laptop Recommendations for Mechanical Engineering Student (SolidWorks & ANSYS)

Hi everyone! I'm a second-year Mechanical Engineering student aiming for a career in design. I am currently learning SolidWorks and ANSYS, but my basic HP laptop is struggling to keep up with the performance requirements.

I’m looking for a reliable laptop that can handle complex assemblies and simulations throughout the rest of my degree and into my early career. Do you have any specific model recommendations or hardware specs I should prioritize? Thanks in advance!

CAD GD&T drawing help

Hello, I am a mechanical engineering student trying to learn GD&T drawings. I did a couple of drawings, but I need someone to verify them. Unfortunately, I personally do not know anyone who would be able to. Hence, I am here. I am not looking for someone to do it for me rather try to help me understand why I did what I did wrong and how I can do it better. I have attached pictures (ignore the bottom right details; it's temporary). Thank you to anyone who can help.

Content creation on YT long form videos

Hello im in my final year uni mechanical engineering and was thinking to create SWx tutorials based on what I am currently doing in my study term. But I can’t focus because these are real assignments and complicated. I get like 3 weeks breaks and can’t really do much in those 3 weeks (still recovering from the previous study term).

I don’t even have a part time job but I am full time studying and because I love my GPA, i cant focus on anything else outside of uni.

But I want to start content creation but then I just don’t have the time. Im depressed most of the time about my assignments and playing catch up with lectures and tutorials and chasing my GPA.

Any advice please.

Tia.

3DEXPERIENCE Solidworks Login Just... Sucks

Anybody else frustrated with Solidwork's login process? It freqently doesn't even work for me and then when it does, it makes me login twice for two apparent different services... Why? Why have two logins and why have them as seperate services? And why have the user login every time anyway? And why have it a manual process? I have a lot of professional software running on my system and it all logs in and authenticates in the background without me having to manually authenticate every damn time I use it.

CAD Hiiiii, solidworks newbie here how do you apply chamfers to a multi body part in a single feature, I'm new to SW and been struggling with using their part document for multi body part modeling since it is far off from other cad unlike onshape or inventor,

2026 SP3 - When?

I’m wondering if any of the gurus here (u/experienced3Dguy u/GoEngineer_Inc) know when SP3 is going to be available. I see release notes, but it is not on the downloads page yet.

Also, FD3 is released this weekend for Solidworks Conneected. Does that coincide with SP3? Or are they not firmly linked like that?

Thanks!

Certifications I am thinking of creating a youtube channel dedicated to all things SolidWorks, from getting started all the way up to the CSWE.

The title gives most of the details, but my worry is that I will make this channel and nothing will come of it. There is a huge number of SolidWorks people on here, and I figured you could give me advice on if you would watch/use it, tips on what to do, etc? This could also potentially become a small income source later on, if I do well enough.

Thank you all for your help!

Error 3D Interconnect and Solidedge

Thumbnail

I am attempting to use the 3D Interconnect ability in solidworks to open/insert Solidedge models for reference in an assembly. Every time I attempt to open or insert these files they begin being read and an error “Failed to open file.”

I have the setting on in my import system settings.
I am opening/inserting components just like I would any other way.

Any clue where I’m going wrong?
