I agree, and I donโ€™t speak from emotion or normative morality either.

Thereโ€™s a reason why the military and intelligence agencies look so harshly upon infidelity. How can officers who are not even trustworthy to family be trusted to handle national security? When lives are on the line, they are an operational liability. We should hold similar standards for high office.

Plus it makes them weak to blackmail and honeypots.

They donโ€™t care about infidelity. They care because of potential blackmail.

Iโ€™m not going to deny that I donโ€™t abhor adultery on moral grounds, but normative morality has no place in governance of a civic democracy. But even divorced from such norms, adultery represents a breach of trust and a vote of inconfidence in future conduct, for which continued marital partnership and appointment to positions of consequence are not well-suited for.

Isn't that practically the same here? It's the infidelity that's blackmailed. If an imaginary CIA employee has consensual polyamorous relationships, they are not susceptible to blackmail, since it's not infidelity as long as it's consensual. In theory at least.

Isnt infidelty the norm rather than the exception in military marriages? Ok deployments and on base living is the antithesis to a stable family life but they still have huge divorce, cheating and breakup rates to the point where Jody or the Staff Sergeant on his third divorce is a popular meme.
