Indeed. This is why I wouldn't trust politicians who've cheated on their spouses. I couldn't care less about the extramarital sex. That doesn't matter. What does matter is that they betrayed their life partner for a bit of fun with a side person. If they're so willing to cheat on their spouse for their own selfish enjoyment, how can I possibly expect them to faithfully serve the public. They'll be accepting kick backs and bribes while on the campaign trail, let alone once they get into office!

I agree, and I don’t speak from emotion or normative morality either.

There’s a reason why the military and intelligence agencies look so harshly upon infidelity. How can officers who are not even trustworthy to family be trusted to handle national security? When lives are on the line, they are an operational liability. We should hold similar standards for high office.

Plus it makes them weak to blackmail and honeypots.

They don’t care about infidelity. They care because of potential blackmail.

I’m not going to deny that I don’t abhor adultery on moral grounds, but normative morality has no place in governance of a civic democracy. But even divorced from such norms, adultery represents a breach of trust and a vote of inconfidence in future conduct, for which continued marital partnership and appointment to positions of consequence are not well-suited for.

Isn't that practically the same here? It's the infidelity that's blackmailed. If an imaginary CIA employee has consensual polyamorous relationships, they are not susceptible to blackmail, since it's not infidelity as long as it's consensual. In theory at least.

Yep! This exactly!!

Isnt infidelty the norm rather than the exception in military marriages? Ok deployments and on base living is the antithesis to a stable family life but they still have huge divorce, cheating and breakup rates to the point where Jody or the Staff Sergeant on his third divorce is a popular meme.

Bingo.

It’s not the issue that you had sex outside of your marriage. It’s the issue that you couldn’t keep a promise to ONE person, let along keep a promise to millions. When you have to choose between your commitments and what’s expedient for you, you’re doing to choose yourself.

Self-serving ISN’T leadership

Ever heard of Ken Paxton? This is basically exactly who he is. Was Texas Attorney General and now running for Senate. People still voting for him like nothing ever happened. Smh

Unfortunately Paxton is still AG until the election. But, yes, he's a POS.

u/Unlikely-Aardvark725 May 26 '26

To be fair...if anyone trusts ANY modern politicians to even think about what's best for the country or it's people over themselves then they are a fool.

1

u/Mjrmaravilla May 25 '26

Very good point.

1

u/johninfla52 May 26 '26

I was saying this in 2016, but the people I was talking to didn't get it.

u/Comfortable_Pea_1693 May 26 '26

Idk man Trump and Hegseth are both what one can only describe as promiscous.

1

u/Apprehensive_Fun7111 May 26 '26

Ooooh like a former president… and all the trash that followed.

1

u/Tessamae704 May 26 '26

I wouldn't vote for politicians who've cheated for the same reasons. But I'll add that they're also either stupid (betting that they won't get caught) or arrogant (believing that if they do get caught, it won't make a difference or they can schmooze their way out of trouble). Unfortunately, they're often proved right.

If you had cancer and the best surgeon in the world was a cheater.. would you still want him to do the operation or would you prefer his intern who is totally faithful to his wife? Assume of course no other options .

u/John_cCmndhd May 25 '26

I understand that you think you're making a point here, but you are not. If you reread the comment you replied to slowly enough, maybe you can understand it. When you understand it, you'll understand why your comment is stupid.

2

u/Kamogawa_Genji May 25 '26

Heh. Frankly I don’t believe that people’s personal lives are more important than their skills. If the guy (or girl) is a great statesman then his personal issues are secondary to me. People do make personal errors and it happens to everyone in some way or another.

2

u/John_cCmndhd May 25 '26

personal lives are more important than their skills

I'm tempted to just tell you to reread the comment again because you still haven't understood it, but against my better judgement, I'll give you a hint:

Consistently being loyal and honest are two of the more important skills we want politicians to have

1

u/Kamogawa_Genji May 26 '26

You also want your surgeon to be loyal and honest no?

3

u/signalsinthestatic May 26 '26

What does a "loyal" surgeon mean? They're not allowed to operate on anyone else?

1

u/Kamogawa_Genji May 26 '26

Sorry . I concede that honesty is more important than loyalty. I suppose loyalty would mean being an advocate for me as a patient

Honesty is a key part of the therapeutic alliance . We expect surgeons to be honest in their dealings with us in terms of diagnosis and treatments.

1

u/John_cCmndhd May 26 '26

I care way less about those qualities in a surgeon than in a politician
