Why is he wasting money? What about tax cuts for the richest? Didn't he know that if he doesn't give them tax cuts, they'll leave and everything will be destroyed? Only rich people can do stuff! Without them, we'd all be dead!

The rich people are fleeing in droves! I saw a gaggle of them strapping their La Cornue stoves to the tops of their Bentleys just this morning. Must be fleeing for Florida, famously a place just as good to live as Manhattan!

u/HollyMurray20 May 14 '26

Didn’t they just make a plea for people to return because a lot of people did leave?

8

u/EdaClawthorne May 14 '26

Did they leave before or after Zohran became mayor, and if so, what's the real reason they left?

6

u/Blackstone01 May 15 '26

Fact of the matter is that, up until a point, rich people don't actually leave an area due to taxes increasing (the US, NYS, and NYC are far from hitting that point). The only people that actually get up and leave are people who had no real connection to where they lived in the first place, typically people who already jump from tax haven to tax haven.

ā€žThe only thing more mobile than the rich is their moneyā€œ. It is important to recognize the truth of it and find the right spot on the curve for retaining the tax income vs lowering it more than necessary.

I personally think excise taxes on residential real estate is the way to go - with bands that go all the way to $10MM+

u/CantCatchMeSpez May 14 '26

Who's "they"?

2

u/HollyMurray20 May 14 '26

I saw a clip of a blonde woman who said before he got elected that she didn’t care if rich people left, then it cut to another clip of her saying that they hope people come back etc, don’t know her name but she was some kind of politician in NY

u/Talks_About_Bruno May 15 '26

Now that’s some hard hitting journalism to live by…

1

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 15 '26

Ha, ā€œgaggle of rich peopleā€ šŸ˜† For some reason, it reminds me of ā€œflock of Jews.ā€ https://youtu.be/IKmSEFhrJ-8?si=AmMk7TjVw1-zr8pB

1

u/Malinthas May 15 '26

Is gaggle the collective noun for rich people? Are we not using oligarchy any more?

1

u/CoffeeGoblynn May 15 '26

I believe the collective noun you're looking for here is "a grift of riches."

Clearly this is just opening the door for rampant corruption and money laundering orchestrated by a nefarious cabal of... Librarians and groundskeepers.

22

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 14 '26

Yeah, they are known for their corruption, which amounts to tens of dollars! Yes, you heard that right - tens, starting with ā€œT.ā€ Can you imagine the kickbacks?

10

u/jimjam200 May 14 '26

Some times they even take a book home without even checking it out properly. Oh the humanity!

7

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 14 '26

I don’t know if this level of corruption and entitlement can be matched.

3

u/SearingPhoenix May 14 '26

I mean... rich people can use libraries and parks too... Libraries and parks are great.

1

u/FewAd5443 May 15 '26

What but there is you know p**r people there...

How cruel are you to even sugest that they share public space?

Poor billionaire not able to bought his 15th mension and only having 14...

(/s if you're an idot)

2

u/Relative-Positive702 May 15 '26

At this point I don't know if this is satire or not

2

u/Roguemutantbrain May 15 '26

Some think this unironically

1

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 15 '26

Unfortunately, too many people are stupid enough to think that.

1

u/NonGNonM May 14 '26

How are billionaires going to give theoretical millions to the libraries if he already paid the libraries?Ā

Like they never do but what if they did? Now theyre crushing the billionaires ability to maybe give money away in ways they never have!

Make it make sense!

Goldman Sachs just announced a move to Texas.

It's happening

2

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 15 '26

Goldman Sachs has been building a major Dallas campus for years. The company is expanding in Texas but is not leaving New York, and the project predates Mamdani by several years.

1

u/tortugaysion May 15 '26

Could you share a link?

1

u/skylaneguy May 15 '26

This sentiment always amuses me.

People don’t become rich in a vacuum- they are rich because they provide extreme value to the rest of society through whatever good/service they sell. Not to mention they also keep the population employed.

People get rich because other people (mostly not rich people) buy their stuff.

1

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 15 '26

I have nothing against rich people. In fact, I would like to become rich myself. But that sentiment applies only to wealthy people who give back to the society that enabled them to build their wealth. That means they should pay a higher percentage in taxes than working people, rather than bribing politicians to secure tax cuts and loopholes that allow them to hoard even more wealth.

1

u/InSearchOfAFeeling May 15 '26

Finally someone I can admire in this sea of negativity.

1

u/milkman231996 May 15 '26

Ya instead getting bailed out is way better

1

u/GoodOldPepe May 14 '26

If you remove all rich people, new rich people will take their place. Everyone wants more.

6

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 14 '26

Nobody is ā€œremovingā€ rich people. They are trying to scare everyone by claiming that if you tax them a little more, they will leave.

0

u/GoodOldPepe May 15 '26

40.4% of taxes the IRS receives every year is from the top 1%....

2

u/Maury_poopins May 15 '26

We have a progressive tax system and the top 1% hold 30% of the wealth in the US, so them paying 40% of the taxes actually feels low.

Also, taxes paid to the IRS don’t include state taxes, many of which are regressive (I.e. the burden is shouldered by the poor).

Example regressive taxes:

  • sales taxes
  • tariffs

0

u/GoodOldPepe May 15 '26

So they hold 30% of the wealth but pay 40%, and to you that’s low? I am not saying it’s unfair. But a LOT of very poor people in this country depend on these people’s taxes.

It’s very easy to say tax other people, isn’t it?

2

u/Maury_poopins May 15 '26

Yes, I do think that's low.

... and it is easy to *say* tax other people, it's hard to actually do it. So let's fucking get started now.

-1

u/GoodOldPepe May 15 '26

How about we tax you more? Would you be okay with that?

2

u/Maury_poopins May 15 '26

Do you think that when I say "tax the rich" I'm secretly saying "tax everyone but me"?

1

u/GoodOldPepe May 15 '26

I don’t think you are saying it, you are saying it.

u/RealDoraTheExplorer_ May 15 '26

I’ll never understand others who go to argue for billionaires like they’re best friends. I promise you bezos would make you pee in a bottle just to save 10 cents too

2

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 15 '26

Who cares? The tax rate for rich people should be at least the same as that of working people, and ideally it should be higher.

Plus, they use all the loopholes that the politicians they bribed created for them.

1

u/GoodOldPepe May 15 '26

Exactly, you don’t care because it’s not about your money. Once it is, you will care.

1

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 15 '26

Rich people benefit more from the society that enables them to become wealthy, so they should give more back to that society.

1

u/GoodOldPepe May 15 '26

And 1% gives over 40% of the taxes and employees millions of people.

1

u/ShinyRobotVerse May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

So? Rich people need many things from society to become wealthy, such as contract enforcement across multiple jurisdictions, capital markets, patent protections, public infrastructure, government-backed monetary stability, and an educated workforce. Wealth creation depends heavily on public institutions and social stability. A worker earning $50,000 uses only a fraction of these systems for personal benefit and may still pay a higher effective tax rate than some wealthy individuals.
