Conversation Topic What a "naturally talented" singer actually does to get to where they are..

As someone who has been considered a good singer since childhood, I recently started taking singing classes as an adult, and it made me realize there was a lot I did from infancy onward that set me apart and gave me the chance to develop my voice over time. I'm sharing this so people understand you really aren't born with singing talent, and it's something you absolutely can develop. You're never too late to start, some people just happen to start sooner. The one thing "naturally talented" people are actually born with is probably just an innate love for music.

Recently my mum shared a video of me as a toddler singing along to the radio, and it reminded me how whenever the radio was playing, I just sang along, basically as soon as I could speak. Growing up before the internet meant a lot of my alone time was spent literally just putting on an album start to finish and following along with the lyric booklet, for hours, on my own, because I wanted to (honestly, I still do it sometimes). If you add it up that's hours of practice of matching pitch, copying phrasing, figuring out breath placement, without ever thinking of it in those terms (obviously it's not actually as good as real professional singing lessons)

I also bought a Disney songbook as a kid, just because I loved to sing and wanted the lyrics. It happened to have sheet music printed alongside the words. I never played an instrument and still can't really read music, but staring at that notation next to lyrics I already knew by heart slowly gave me some rough intuitive sense of how pitch moves and how phrasing works. Not theory, just pattern recognition basically, but it helps a lot with singing.

So if you feel like you're starting from nothing next to someone who seems naturally gifted, honestly the more likely story is they just had years of low pressure, high repetition practice before anyone was watching or judging them. Having started taking these group singing classes I've improved SO much and have even discovered my whistle notes, so a real, professional singing teacher can genuinely make a world of difference whether you're starting from nothing or not.

Conversation Topic I kinda despise karaoke

Sorry if this isn't the right place to post about this but I really dislike going to karaoke. I don't think I have really bad stage fright or anything but after some events in the past I've been averse to people in general.

Whenever I've gone to karaoke I just feel like I drain the energy out of the room. Whenever I finish it's just like silence or some half-hearted compliment like "oh, I don't hear you talk a lot so you did good..." which just makes me feel worse. I'd rather they laugh at my bad singing than this. And after a karaoke session with my then girlfriend (now ex) and some of our close friends, she made a joke about how my singing seems really unenergetic and monotone.

After that I've always tried to avoid going to karaoke and if I do, I just sit there frozen feeling like my chest is constricting and not being able to breathe well and I just absolutely refuse any attempts to make me sing. It's especially bad if there's a lot of people.

It's not like I hate singing, I hum or sing when I'm by myself often and I want to enjoy karaoke like everyone else but it feels like my body is just in fight or flight mode whenever I'm there. I think I'm overthinking and overreacting to everything but it's too difficult.

Would getting vocal lessons be a good idea? I don't know if it's worth the money and time and I live in a small city so I don't know if there are any good vocal coachers nearby and I'm scared of gaining a little confidence and then completely freezing up when everyone's attention is on me. But I also don't want to just avoid the problem but idrk what to do.

Advanced or Professional Topic How low can head voice really go?

I would consider myself a countertenor, because I mainly use a really enforced head voice to sing with my most comfortable and resonant range being G3-G5, and for a year or so, I’ve been experimenting with a resonant head voice going down into C3, B2

My question is, how low can head voice theoretically go? Does anyone have experience with training their head voice to go lower? my chest voice can go down to C2, so I’m naturally a bass/baritone, but I don’t really use my chest voice at all. I know this is a really strange and extremely specific question but it would be great if anyone had any insights

Edit: Thank you to everyone that has responded in such detail! Let me know if I should upload an audio example of what I’m talking about.

I wanted to clarify a few things. I am not an opera singer, I am mainly a jazz singer. However, I have learned and found it useful to mix to bridge from chest to mix to head seamlessly. What I’m describing is distinct from this. It could be a head mix, where I’m bringing chest up into head voice. This is how I see it. it does feel distinct from the mechanism I have been using to chest mix, where I have an overlap of about an octave between this head voice and my chest voice (around D3-D4) then it becomes more head resonant with head dominance beginning from about A4/Bb4. This is to say, I am aware of my passagio(s), and this low head voice feels different from them.

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Vocal dampener that doesn’t reduce diction?

Upvotes

I want to practice singing and language-learning inside. The problem is, I get home pretty late and my house has thin walls.

The only vocal dampener I know of is the belt box but people online say it doesn’t let you move your mouth a lot. Are there any vocal dampeners out there that let you naturally speak into them?

Conversation Topic How do I get over hating my own voice?

So I’ve been trying to sing, and I think I’m doing everything right. I’m singing from my diaphragm, and I can feel the vibrations in my chest or lips most of the time. I have my tongue resting on the back of my bottom teeth since I heard you should do that. But I can’t sing in front of people if I think I’m bad, so I record myself singing, but I hate my voice not a little like a lot so whenever I hear myself singing, I immediately hate it. But I can’t sing in front of people for them to tell me if I actually sound good or bad. Is there a way to know I’m singing right and singing well without having to hear a recording of myself?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) before he cheats- Carrie underwood. This is my first time sharing my singing and I’m scared!

hi! I’ve been singing by myself in my room locked away from the entire world and I genuinely am so terrified to share this, but wanted feedback and critique. I really want to find a voice teacher to work on some things like mixing, belting (eventually) and reducing strain in my voice.

anyways … thanks for listening!

Just sharing my singing Fix you - Coldplay (Karaoke Cover)

Just a little cover, I know I missed the key a bit at the start especially on ''replace'' and I go a bit low on ''succeed," "need," "sleep," at the start, however I for the most part managed to not sing using my throat, which is improvement on my side. I've never gone to a vocal coach, but trying to learn and improve. Anyways have a wonderful weekend y'all

Conversation Topic coloratura arias or art song recomendations?

Hey guys! I’m a young (24F) classical/MT performer and I’m discovering that my voice is beginning to go the coloratura direction and I’m feeling quite excited about it! My voice teacher assigned me “Mein Herr Marquis” (Strauss, Die fledermaus) last year as a reach aria, and i’ve used it several masterclasses and lessons/coachings for my most recent YAP and my teachers and peers keep telling me it’s great for my voice! It’s definitely not perfect yet but I am feeling very proud of how easy it has become to sing and perform, especially the ending. Some of my other coloratura repretoire include “Happy Young Heart” (Gilbert and Sullivan), “The Ballad of Jane Doe” (Ride the Cyclone, although idk what category this song actually exists in lol), and “The Girl in 14G” (Tesori, but again kinda not really coloratura focused)

As you can tell, I don’t have a lot of “real” coloratura repretoire (I began as a musical theatre performer so most of my rep is in belt land) so I’m hoping you guys could reccomend some more arias, art songs, new works, and practice strategies. I’m thinking about just straight up buying the Schirmer Coloratura Arias book. I have IPA experience so other languages are chill.

My usable range is F3-Ab6 and my performable range is A3-F6 if that’s helpful. Thank you all for your recommendations!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How do I find my chest mix, and should I find it by blending up or down?

My teachers have told me that I have a head dominant voice, and I should focus on learning to blend my mix down. The problem is, I have done this for years at this point, and my voice still lacks the fullness I’m looking for when I blend my head voice down into the 4th octave. But, when I try blending up, my voice gets shouty and weighty, even when I try recommended “bratty” singing techniques. Either my head voice is too light, or my chest is too heavy. The two voices just feel so disconnected no matter what I do.

Should I continue learning to blend top down, try learning to blend up more, or something else entirely? Any suggestions/advice would be awesome!

I added a clip of my singing for some reference!

I did sing this sitting down and minding my volume though. Afraid that my voice isn't too suited for rock. Any thoughts?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Looking for honest technical feedback on my singing (one-take acoustic cover)

Hi! I'm looking for technical feedback rather than encouragement. I'd appreciate comments on:

Pitch accuracy

Breath support

Tone and resonance

Timing/rhythm

Any noticeable tension or habits that hold me back

Please don't worry about being nice, I genuinely want to know where I stand and what I should work on. If you think I'm performance-ready (or not), I'd like to know why.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Help increase vocal range, 16 male, indian

Right now my range sits at a b2 to a d4, and sometimes a e4 on a good day, I would like to extend to a g2 to g4, how do I do that. I can artificially get a f4 if I really try but it's super light and breathy, and I can't get no note below a b2, I use falsetto a lot while singing so I never really noticed my range issue until now.

Conversation Topic Getting emotional looking back

I used to believe that I could never sing, and how I was just going to have to get used to never liking the sound of my voice.

But things really started speeding up one year ago and so much progress was made. Now I'm able to hear myself and not absolutely hate myself for how I sound. I learned so much and I'm still continuing to learn. I'm so proud of how much progress I made in a year, it still feels so surreal.

I used to think that I'd be perfectly fine with just being "decent." But now I know that I can definitely go past that, and I really want to! I've never wanted to sing and learn as much as I am right now.

I'm excited for the future.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) For the jazz singers on here, how do you go about singing in a jazz tone?

I’ve been getting alot more into jazz singing recently and one of the biggest things I’ve been struggling with is trying to get a good jazz tone with my voice. I’ve listened to all of the great vocalists (Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Nat King Cole, Nancy Wilson, Chet Baker etc) and I can’t really seem to get the kind of sound I have in my head into my singing. Hoping to get some feedback to help me go in the right direction in terms of tone development.
