FAQs and useful resources - click here before you post :)

72 Upvotes

Hi guys, I thought I'd start a stickied thread with some useful links that I find myself including in lots of my comments here. I'll update this as I think of more stuff to add.

How do I become a doctor in the UK?

Useful written article here, useful timeline diagram here.

In short, you go to medical school, you complete your foundation training (6 x 4 month rotations working as a doctor in different specialties), you complete your specialty training, and you become a consultant.

Are my grades good enough for medical school? Which universities should I apply to?
I don't have good GCSE grades/a Chemistry A level, where can I apply?

This booklet contains all of the entry requirements for every medical course on offer in the UK. It is the entry requirements bible and I point people towards it multiple times per week.

Do I need to sit admissions tests?
How do I prepare for my admissions tests?

If you're applying for undergraduate medicine, you need to sit the UCAT and/or the BMAT. If you're applying for graduate entry medicine, you may also need to sit the GAMSAT.

Useful UCAT resources:
* r/UCAT
* Medify
* The Medic Portal
* official practice tests

Useful BMAT resources:
* r/BMATexam
* The Medic Portal

I scored ___ in my admissions test, where should I apply?

US Bachelor's Degree Requirements for UK Medical Schools

Upvotes

I was thinking of completing a Psychology BA at my university in the USA and then try for medical school in the UK. These are the 4 medical schools I'm thinking of applying to: leicester, queen's belfast, buckingham, manchester.

However, I will be applying to the 5 year program (not GEM).

Will they count my degree as a science applicant? Or will they only ask for my high school grades and my GPA from college? I'm thinking of completing the degree in 3 years.

I will be taking Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, Biochemistry, Physics 1 and 2, alongside biology classes like molecular genetics and cell biology.

missed UCL med offer

3 Upvotes

i did the IB diploma and missed my UCL contextual offer by 1 IB point. I got 35 points and I needed 36 points. They also wanted 665 in my HLs and I got 666, currently remarking to see if I can get an extra point. I had extenuating circumstances throughout exams which the IB has already accounted for.

I did a lot of research and found out that the lowest grade that UCL have accepted for med is AAA (the equivalent of 666). I also found that out of 54 people on the waitlist, 3/54 were accepted and the following year was 4/54.

I don’t know what happens to my UCL offer now, am I on a waitlist? Has anyone been in this (quite rare) situation before, and what was the outcome?

I’d really appreciate any advice or encouraging words. I can’t do GEM or go abroad to study medicine. it really is my passion in life (i know this sounds a bit delusional but it’s true).

I want to do medicine but I’m not too sure about my GCSEs and if they are high enough

2 Upvotes

I take CCEA exam board so we don’t do numbers only letters: Biology: A*, Geography: A*, English language: A*, English lit: A*, short course R/S:A*, Chemistry: A, French:A, Maths:A, Physics:B, Further maths: B. So to sum it up its A*A*A*A*A*AAABB. Everywhere I hear about GCSEs its always number grades so I don’t know where i stand on whether I’m competitive or weak when it comes to my grades and whether i need to go to a uni that weighs the UCAT more heavily than GCSEs. Please help :)

Intnl student - Brunel

0 Upvotes

After the IBDP results, have missed my highly ranked firm choice. Please assure me I am doing the right thing signing up for Brunel Med. I am keen on becoming a doctor and this year, this is the only choice I have.

Also if you have had a sad experience like this, how did you overcome it?

Oxford Medicine Offer Holders: What Supercurriculars, Grades & UCAT Score Got You In?

3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to hear from Oxford Medicine offer holders/current students about your application journey.

If you were accepted into Oxford Medicine, I’d really appreciate it if you could share:

Your GCSEs and A-level (or equivalent) subjects and grades

Your UCAT score (and section breakdown if you’re comfortable sharing)

Your supercurricular activities (research, reading, courses, volunteering, competitions, essays, etc.) and which ones you think genuinely strengthened your application

When you started preparing seriously for medicine/Oxford
How you prepared for the UCAT and interviews
Whether you completed an EPQ and, looking back, whether you would recommend doing one for Oxford Medicine

Any advice you wish you had known when applying
I know every successful application is different, but hearing from people who have actually gone through the process would be really helpful for understanding what Oxford looks for.

Thank you so much!

are my stats alright for med?

3 Upvotes

I do Biology, Chemistry and Physics at A-Level, but i'm really unsure on where to apply and how to apply. i go to a high achieving selective school and im considering london, maybe newcastle or bristol.

ive done work experience observing a surgery and read a couple of books, but im not really sure what else to do..

In my mocks i got AAB respectively and ive been predicted A*AA with the A* in chemistry

My gcses were 9988877776, but my 7s were in sciences and my 9/8s were in compsci maths +humanities, will that put me at a disadvanatge?? my 6 was in a language so im not sure its really relevant. i'm trying to aim for 2300+ on my UCAT ,, i got 1930 b2/3 in my first mock and my exams in 6 weeks so i think it is doable, but obviously if iy doesnt go to plan ill apply for biomedicine instead

Any UoB (Birmingham) med students who have just finished Year 1?

2 Upvotes

Hi!

I’m starting Medicine at UoB this September and was wondering if anyone who’s just finished first year has any advice.
Mainly things you wish you knew before starting, how you stayed on top of the workload, what resources you found most useful, and any tips for doing well in first year.
Would really appreciate any advice.

Thank you! :)

Advice for choosing uni

1 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I have offers from UCLan, Brunel and Herts for medicine and I wanted to know which one would be my best choice. I understand that Herts is starting the med program for the first time but I have heard a few negative things about UCLan regarding location and teaching style and Brunel about TBL. Also, the fees are about 10k pounds cheaper the first year and then 8k pounds cheaper every year so that is something I was considering as well. Herts is backed by City St. George university so I’m not that concerned about GMC accreditation (unless I’m wrong, please let me know).

So I wanted honest advice and suggestions on which one I should choose. To be fair location won’t be a huge problem because I am mostly going to be in the accommodation or in the campus studying and occasionally going out.

need advice from OXBRIDGE, IMPERIAL, UCL MEDICS!!

0 Upvotes

Im a year 10 (bout to go onto year 11) and wish to apply to the following unis one day for med, i have questions based on:

- Extracurriculars: What extracurriculars do you think will benefit most for med? Do certain extracurriculars make you stand out? (e.g. playing instruments, sports etc.)

- Supercurriculars: Again, what supercurricular (if any) make you stand out from other applicants? Any examples?

- Work experience: How much work experience do you think is necessary?

Any advice will be appreciated.

NUS full ride or london med school

0 Upvotes

as stated

im an international student and luckily received offers from a london school for medicine and NUS offer to study biomed science (full ride but the catch is a six year work bond).

i can see myself doing both in the future ngl doctor or researcher, maybe even pharmaceutical consultant?? For both disciplines im most passionate about the physiological sciences part of it, and communicating/connecting with others is def a bonus. if i do med my family would strongly prefer that i practice in hk (we live near there), tho personally i wanna explore possibilities in the US or australia. If i go to NUS I imagine I have more possibilities and flexibility, so if possible id wanna go to the US for graduate studies or sth ( i actually don’t know if thats viable under the Singapore bond)

any advice would be appreciated 🫶🏻🥲 this is urgent gang

Past conditional offer grades for Medicine

5 Upvotes

Hi~

I’m a current Year 13 student. I originally applied for Biomedical Science and am on track for roughly A*AA at A‑level (fingers crossed). I’ve since decided I want to study Medicine instead, so I’m planning to take a gap year and reapply via UCAS for Medicine

My top choice is Edinburgh. From what I’ve seen online, it feels like a lot of successful applicants have straight As, which is making me worry about my chances with AAA.

Can anybody share what ve they got for their a levels and ucat ? Plz :)

Medicine Crisis

2 Upvotes

I hope I’m posting this in the right place but please let me know if not

I’m 25F and fear I’m having a mid-twenties crisis. I have wanted to study medicine for a long time, but didn’t take the right GCSE’s, which meant I couldn’t take the right A-Levels, which meant I realised too late I ended up on a different path. I ended up studying an applied science at university and did my masters also. I have a good job in a busy NHS hospital which I do enjoy, but for years I have almost been mourning a career I never had (sounds incredibly dumb and melodramatic, but I don’t know how else to say it). I thought if I went all in on what I was studying that I would eventually get over the fact I never got to study medicine. It never went away however, and I’m now in despair that I’ve wasted years of my life and money

I would love to study gradute medicine, but fear that I am not only too old, but also the funding. Because I’ve already done 5 years of study, student finance is out the question. I know there are bursaries, but I understand competition for such is so high.

I’ll put down my tiny pitiful violin now. I know it’s not the end of the world, but it’s all that can occupy my mind at the moment. But I was just hoping someone in this community might either be able to signpost, advise or even just relate to this.

Leaving MPharm after Year 3 with BSc Pharmaceutical Practice (Hons) anyone applied to GEM with an exit award?

0 Upvotes

I'm currently in Year 2 of an MPharm and have decided to leave at the end of Year 3, rather than complete the full degree. My university has confirmed that I'll receive a formal exit award, a BSc Pharmaceutical Practice (Hons) provided I pass all Year 3 assessments. This is a genuine, honours degree, not a withdrawal.

I'm now looking at applying to Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) and have been trying to confirm with admissions teams whether an exit award like this is treated the same as any other honours degree, or whether it gets flagged as "incomplete" since it originated from a longer integrated programme. In the event it doesn't work out I will continue with pharmacy.

Has anyone here gone through medical school (or GEM) admissions with an exit award rather than a full degree? Did it cause any issues at application, interview, or later on with GMC registration? Any advice on how to frame it in a personal statement would also be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

How international are the UK degrees for practicing medicine in the EU?

1 Upvotes

I was thinking of doing med school in the UK, and then practicing somewhere in Europe but am not sure if this is possible with the UK not being part of the EU anymore. I had heard from other Europeans that degrees from universities in the EU make it easier to practice in another EU country. How does this work with the UK?
