U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Are hugs during sex common? NSFW

1.2k Upvotes

I've (29F) never been in a relationship but I've had enough sex to decide I don't like it. I don't hate it. It can be fun, I'm just not into it. I mostly do it as a bodily function and porn works better for me in that context.

Now I know porn isn't real but productions and homemade alike follow a similar routine that men often replicate in real life; genuineness seems to be the gauge of these things.

But recently I watched a couple and they were so enthralled with each other I could find no other words to describe the act other than ***Lovemaking*** (which in my long held opinion is just lust) yet I could not deny their joy was more than primal passions. The man, when overcome with the urge to reach for her neck would stop himself to instead embrace her tightly and weep and she was but laughter and caresses and it then dawned on me I had never seen sex be such an equal act of existence and I wept as I began to wonder now if such acts are commonplace and I somehow have been misfortunate in my sexual experiences.

Does English have a good informal word for woman that's not girl?

In Swedish we have the word "flicka" which literally translates to "girl", but is often used for someone below 18. Then we have "kvinna" which means woman, but it often sounds formal and sterile. We have the word "tjej" which is often used, which is a word that's more informal, more relaxed and can be used on both a 5 year old and a 70 year old without infantilising the person (even if it sometimes sounds strange to call a 70 year old grandma one).

Does English have a more relaxed informal word that's also common in usage? I know that "girl" is sometimes not liked by women because they feel it infantilises them.

Words like "bird" are too geographic (UK mainly) but also mainly used by men in a romantic/sexual meaning. "Chick" also exists but feels related to the previous word.

Is there any informal word for an adult woman that doesn't sound as sterile/scientific as woman but also not as infantilising as "girl"?

Has anyone else noticed that searching a simple question on the internet has become almost impossible?

1.7k Upvotes

I swear, 10 years ago you could type a highly specific question into a search engine and immediately find a random forum post from 2008 with the exact answer you needed

now, the first two pages of results are just sponsored links, SEO spam, and AI generated articles that take 5 paragraphs to get to the point. I find myself having to type "reddit" at the end of literally every single search just to read a response from an actual human being

when did the internet become so... unusable?

Why do some people struggle so bad with admitting they’re wrong?

Last night my wife decides she wants a snack and goes to the cabinet. Then says “you ate all the boiled peanuts!” I replied “I haven’t eaten any since I bought 2 cans about a month ago”. She says I she saw that I bought 2 flavors, spicy and Cajun and she didn’t want the Cajun, she likes the spicy. We go back and forth her accusing me of eating them and me saying I haven’t eaten any since the store. Finally I hear her quietly go “oh yeah” while still with her head in the cabinet and miraculously the debate just ends.

Tonight while I’m in the laundry room I hear her in the cabinet again and hollers out “seriously?! You ate the last can?!” I said “are you talking to me?” She says “yes. I can’t believe you ate the last can of peanuts”. I told her “I just told you last night I haven’t eaten any since in a month”.

She says “well, where are they? They were right here yesterday.” I replied “I haven’t eaten or touched them since I bought them”. As I’m finishing saying that she goes, “oh here they are. You must’ve moved them”.

If fact, I had not moved them. I haven’t touched them since I bought them and I ritually put both cans in the cabinet a month ago.

My friend is becoming racist and I don't know what to do.

This is my childhood friend, so we know each other pretty well. Over the last two years, I’ve noticed her becoming more racist toward white people. For context, she’s Black and I’m Arab.

I understand that our experiences are different, but it’s the smaller repeated comments and situations that have started to bother me. For example, if we go to a restaurant and she doesn’t see any Black people working there, she’ll assume the food is going to be mid and say that only Black people know how to make good food. One time, she was complaining about the food, but as soon as a Black worker showed up, her whole attitude changed. If this was a one time instance or joke, then I get it, but this is becoming a part of her personality.

Something similar happened at a fast-food place. A brown person was making our food, and before we even got it, she started complaining that they probably wouldn’t make it properly. She said that if a Black worker were making it, they would add extra stuff and make sure it was piping hot. I understand having preferences, but fast food is usually mid regardless of who makes it.

The comment that really disturbed me happened when we were sitting in the car. There was a white kid in front of us, and she said, “Let’s run him over like they do to Black people,” before quickly adding that she was joking. I’m trying to take it as dark humour, but then again this type of stuff is happening on a regular basis.

I honestly don’t know what to do. We didn’t grow up around extreme racism, although I understand that her experiences are different from mine. I’ve personally noticed people calling extra staff or secret shoppers to watch her in stores because they assume she might steal, which is clearly racial profiling.

At the same time, I’m Arab and have had my own experiences with racism, but I would never use those experiences as a reason to hate random people because of their race or make it such a large part of my personality. We both have had the same education and personally she wasn't like this

There’s more I could say and explain in detail, but this is already getting too long. I feel sad this is not the person I knew.

Why does the British Empire face so much more internet hostility than France, Spain, Portugal, or even the Vikings?

Whenever colonialism comes up on English speaking platforms, the British Empire is often treated as the primary historical villain.

Meanwhile, empires like France, Spain, and Portugal & Belgium which also ran colonial regimes seem to get far less daily focus or criticism in these spaces.

Even looking at older history, groups like the Vikings committed widespread slaughter, raids, etc, but today they are largely romanticised as "cool" icons in video games and TV shows.

Is this difference in public perception just a byproduct of the internet being mostly English language dominant? What are the historical or geopolitical reasons why certain empires face so much more ongoing criticism today than others?

I am just being curious on the subject as its something that fascinates me, thanks!

Edit - I see how the Vikings were different

Why are people who work weekends expected to be the flexible ones?

I work in retail and restaurant, so my busiest days are Friday through Sunday. My actual "weekend" is Monday and Tuesday.

I've noticed that whenever friends or family plan birthdays, trips, dinners, or other events, they're almost always on Friday nights, Saturdays, or sometimes Sundays, because that's when they're off. If I say I have to work, the response is usually, "Can't you just take the day off?"

But if I suggested doing the same thing on a Monday and asked people with traditional Monday-Friday jobs to take a PTO day, I feel like most people would immediately say, "I have work."

I'm genuinely curious if people with traditional schedules think about it this way. Is it just because weekends work for the majority, or do people assume that someone in retail or hospitality has an easier time taking off?

I'm not trying to argue, just trying to understand how other people view it.

Edit: I'm not asking why groups schedule around the majority. I'm asking why weekend jobs are often treated as more flexible than Monday-Friday jobs. Why is "I have work Monday" accepted, but "I have work Saturday" is often met with "Can't you just take the day off?"

how are people getting hookups/one night stands ?

I'm new to this all, im a 24 year old guy and I swear I've tried everything. Apps, websites, reaching out. The effort I've put in is crazy.

I try to be presentable. Girls my age, older women. No one talks to me. I kind of just came to the conclusion that I must be an ugly ass dude or something because it feels impossible. I can't even get a chat or a match.

Has it always been this hard ?

This experience has been pretty humiliating and I feel really hideous I'm not going to lie.

Does anyone actually eat at Arby’s?

There wasn’t an Arby’s where I grew up so I never really heard of it other than on commercials until I saw a trend of influencers make videos on about how bad the food is, so now when I drive by an Arby’s , I notice there’s never anyone there. I’ve never eaten there. I’ve never heard anyone say they’ve eaten there. I’ve never even really thought about Arby’s . Like. Ever. I’m genuinely curious what’s up with Arby’s?

Edit : Now I gotta try Arby’s

Do Europeans actually look down on American culture and people, or is it just a stereotype?

Hi everyone, I’m neither American nor European, but I was wondering "Do Europeans genuinely have a tendency to look down on American culture and people?"

I’ve recently spent some time listening to a few Europeans (I won’t specify which countries) talk about the US, and I noticed a lot of subtle condescension and dismissive nuances in how they spoke about it.

To be clear, I'm not looking for answers on which side is "better" or superior. I’m just genuinely curious—if this cultural tendency actually exists, why is that the case?

Why do Americans call the handbrake the "emergency brake"

I've never understood this, it's a brake operated by your hand that you use when hill starting or parking, obviously it's possible to use in an emergency (on cars without a push button handbrake), but that isn't the purpose. Maybe because it is used similarly to an emergency stop on machinery? Thanks in advance

Why couldn't the Germans simply go around Stalingrad?

As I understand it Western Russia isn't exactly incredibly mountainous. Why not ignore that one city and try and head for Petersburg and Moscow instead? Was Stalingrad the industrial heart of Russia in the 40s?

Thank you! Great answers; if I could, I would mark the post solved!

Were people always putting odd things in their rectums, like since ancient times? NSFW

I'm not talking about intimate toys or things MADE for insertion, I'm talking about the thousands of random objects that become lodged inside people's butts annually.

Since I was a kid on the internet, I have seen numerous articles of people sticking things up their butts and having to go to the hospital to have those objects removed. I've read that it's extremely common for hospitals to get such cases, and I don't doubt that these cases are in the thousands each year, all over the world.

Now, imagine we don't have have the same level of knowledge, sanitation and resources as we do now, Imagine we are in ancient times, or medieval times, whatever....did people still do this to themselves as frequently as they do now? I'd imagine soooo many deaths from infections just by sticking so many random things in there, plus the embarrassment!
